Bottles still smell after cleaning? Esp. rubber caps

Hey all,

I recently got a bunch of 15mL bottles flavoring bottles from IDE, and I wanted to reuse them for DIY mixing.

I washed them with dishsoap and hot water, scrubbed, soaked, and I'm still getting IDE-y smells from the caps. The glass is odorless but I guess the IDE flavorings' smell soaked into the rubber.

Got any tips on to neutralize? Preferably with a common household solution?

I was going to suggest just plain white vinegar too. It's an awesome deodorizer for all kinds of things! Much cheaper than vodka too.;)

Won't that go boom? :D

Not really boom of course but combining them will cause foaming which can get out of hand if you aren't careful, lol.

Naaa. It'll definitely foam, but that's all it'll do. I use peroxide and baking soda along with a little bit of dishwashing liquid.

All you have to do is go and buy the cheapest vodka you can find and use that. That is what I use.

Some compounds will stick around for awhile. I've tried just about everything. The best thing I've found is to leave the bottles and caps open. Air will eventually remove the odors. Sometimes it takes a month or two.

Just buying some new bottles might be a more cost effective alternative........................ Or just buying new droppers since the bottles are fine.

Depending on the type of plastic you might want to rethink reusing it.
Some plastics break down faster than others.

Click the link below to get some info on common plastics.

With all that being said just keep in mind.Your best bet is always going to be glass bottles...Period!

Truly? I'm having this problem with some of my droppers; the glass bottles are fine, but if I close them up with certain droppers, then when I uncap them, I'm greeted by the ghost of juice past. I soaked those droppers for about 3 days in a strong concentration of dish soap, and i've been leaving them out in the air for a while now. Really hoping the old smells will eventually fade.

Dropper caps are available alone and are as cheap as 40¢ a piece or less. Comes a time to just trash them.

I concur Dr. I have 2 dropper caps that appear to be terminal now. All efforts to resusitate have been unsucsessful. I forsee a funeral in the near future. :)

On bottle odor and taste.
After washing well I put some 91% isopropyl alcohol in the bottle. Shake it well and if a dropper suck up some of the alcohol in the pipette.
Let it sit for several hours then dump out and leave cap off and let air dry for 24 hours.

No smell or odor.

You can rinse again with warm water after it drys if you want but 91% isopropyl leaves almost no residue at all after it air drys for at least 24 hours.

I brought a whole bunch way back because I needed to add to an order for free shipping and you can just swap the glass into caps for different size bottles.

I know, I've gotten quite a few at Hobby Lobby... but I'm not entirely sure that those'll fit in 30ml bottles, which are the ones that are smelly -- a vaguely-tobacco-ish sourness, and I didn't start using 60ml bottles with droppers until long after I stopped using any tobacco flavors. But I may have to check it out, if I can't get the stink out of these that I have. Or maybe I could just use those bottles for my son's ejuice, since he just switched and still uses several tobacco flavors.

The glass dropper comes out of the rubber and the glass will not hold a smell. I have had the plastic childproof locks break and just put the 120 ML glass dropper in a new cap from a 30ML bottle with the same thread size.

with $4 shipping on the .40 part?

Buy in bulk and you do the math. Not like you are only going to order one and the more you buy the cheaper they get. But remember as I indicated it is just my humble opinion and that is yours.

Except for all the time invested for a 40¢ part. JMHO

Worth it.

I'm also going to do this for like hundreds of bottles. It's a good trick to know.

I clean bottles all the time but when they happen to smell after a Dawn soak and a fresh water bath they get tossed. To each his own and whatever keeps you off the stinkies.

The problem with my droppers isn't the smel, but the rubber bulb is cracking. I have little choice but replace mine.

No Evod Tanks in my arsenal but if you want to send one so I can check it out let me know...........................
it is an ancient Kanger bottom coil clearomizer.

My point was that stocking up does not always have the best results.
Seemed like a good idea at the time though :)
