I don't know why I have put it off for so long but the time has come for me to try my hand at DIY E-Liquids.

The powers that be have given me signs in the form of winning a $25 gift certificate from DIY Flavorshack

https://www.diyflavorshack.com/default.asp

And also winning a bottle of 100 MG Nicotine.

I have sourced PG and VG and can purchase 1 Gallon of each for about $45 delivered.

I have done some research and it seems the best way for me to mix is by weight so I am thinking of ordering this digital scale from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ME8VI34/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I30QU5K7WFTSGR&colid=2NBNZGLM4M5AS

And seeing as this has been coming for quite awhile, I have saved a fairly large quantity of 30 to 120 ml E-Liquid bottles having washed them out dried and stored after I finished the liquids that came in them.

What I do need is advice on which DIY app that would best serve the needs of a rank amature as well as your opinions on the scale I am planning to purchase.

I am planning to start with three flavor profiles using flavors from DIY Flavorshack to get the most out of my gift certificate and need recommendations on which ones to get that can provide what I need for the following.

A) A good tobacco flavor. Preferably Cigar or Pipe flavor.

B) Cherry or Strawberry Cheesecake

C) Dragon Fruit.

I realize that a lot of these E-Liquids use more than one flavor to achieve the desired results or could be dead wrong about this. I just don't know!

And of course simple recipes to follow.

Also, the liquids I am making will be 50/50 PG/VG at 6mg of nic.

And I enjoy stronger flavors of E-liquid.

BTW, I am prepared to to go over the value of my gift certificate to get what I need for my trial run. I like saving money on my E-Liquids but I sure as heck ain't gonna sacrifice flavor to save a few $$!!!!!

Thanks in advance for all of your help:thanks:

I like Steam Engine.

When if comes to calculators you need to look at the suggestions and see what you like - or see if the interface makes your eyes glaze over. Some are more intuitive than other's or may/may not have features you want/like/need.

If I were me I would avoid Cherry for your first DIY attempts. That flavor can be a bitch - both to find one that tastes good and doing the mixing percentages. The smallest amount of too much cherry can easily overwhelm just about anything.

What PG/VG ratio and nic level are you using now?

What I do need is advice on which DIY app that would best serve the needs of a rank amature as well as your opinions on the scale I am planning to purchase.

It might be helpful for some elaboration on your DIY app. desires. One that works online ? Only on a phone or perhaps desktop? Any bells & whistles you have to have? (I've heard some provide costs and or flavor inventory)

I've never used the scale you've linked to. Seems to me it would be fine. You might wish to take a peek at...

I started out with DIY E-Liquid Calculator Ten Flavors With Nicotine Plus PG/VG Adjusting and still use it -- it's the first link in the line at th very bottom of my sig. :D What I liked about it at first was that for each ingredient, you can select the nic level and PG/VG ratio; most calcs don't have that fine-ness of control for the individual ingredients.

Obviously, the ecigvape site is online, but it works equally well on either a PC, phone, or tablet -- though on my phone, I have to purposely select "PC mode" rather than "mobile mode" or it shows the recipes in such a weird format, it's not readable.

Does that work for mixing by weight?
Yes, it works well for mixing by weight, and the one I use regularly. Very simple to understand (and since I'm mathmatically challenged, that's a relief).

I have quite a collection of DIYFS flavorings and really enjoy them. As Heabob stated, their Holy Vanilla and French Vanilla are amazing. I'm also a big fan of Mr. Good Stuff, a creamy, caramel/marshmallow/Sweet Flavor. Their banana cream is excellent, the cranberry tastes like the juice straight from the fruit, and birthday cake is pretty authentic tasting. I have not tried their tobaccos but would love to hear your impressions if you do.

As far as your scale, make sure the one you choose has a .01 graduation for the best accuracy. The LB-501 is a very popular scale amongst diy-ers, mine is a plain jane from eBay that has served me well for around two years.

This isn't rocket science by a long shot, but can seem intimidating when first starting out. I had to wing it when I started with a handful of syringes and a half dozen bottles of Lorann's, but after I found this forum I learned volumes. As you well know, this wonderful place is packed with some of the most talented mixers around and all are willing to help in any way possible. They were a godsend to me and will be to you as well.

Like several others, I use the FREE e juice me up download on my PC. ( http://ejuice.breaktru.com/ )

Should my scale fail, I like that I can adjust drop size with it for mixing small volume amounts. I also have a lot of recipes saved (on hard drives) using it and can't see myself moving elsewhere. Heck, I'm not retyping all those recipes....;)

Having said that, you can understand why it is a good idea you try a bunch of the free programs suggested here and select one that works for you...now.

I use e-juice me up and Juice grinder. I like JG better because you're not limited to only 10 flavor fields, JG has 20. You might not need that many to start, but eventually, you'll want to try a real complex recipe and this on can handle it with ease. Also, it works well for altering an already made juice.

is there a way to set juice grinder up for max VG other than by hand once you have figured your total flavoring?

It's easy, it will convert all your e-juice me up files to the type it uses, takes only a few minutes. Heading to work, will see you tomorrow to talk more about it.

I got started by finding a recipe that sounded good and got good ratings on ELR. Buy those ingredients and mix!
This will give you a good starting point. Keep in mind certain flavors are weaker than others by nature. Example: I have a Sour strawberry watermelon that's my ADV. Watermelon won't stand up against a stronger flavor like strawberry, so you'll have to add more watermelon to be able to taste it in the mix.

Hope this helped.

Are these stand alone flavors or do I need something else to get a great finished product?

Some like them stand alone or even mixed together, but usually they're added in to various recipes that need a good Vanilla.
I like them added in with fruit mixes myself along with a bit of cream.

The general guideline I learned in the TFA thread over at butthead central was 50% main flavor, 50% supporting background flavors (creams, vanilla, sweetener, etc). When I first created my strawberry & cream, I stayed very close to that general guideline, and it works BEAUTIFULLY. Since then, I've been decreasing percentages, so the 50/50 is somewhat off, but the flavor is still pleasing. Not all flavors need that, but it's a good thing to keep in mind.

I thank you all for your advice!

And yesterday I pulled the trigger. BIG TIME:hearts:

In no particular order.....

From Bulk Apothecary. https://www.bulkapothecary.com/

1 Gallon PG
1 Gallon VG

Won in a contest.

100 Ml bottle of HiLiq 100 Mg Nicotine.

Assorted E-Liquid Bottles from my stash of empties collected and cleaned before storing.

And from Amazon.com

Digital Scale with all the bells and whistles notably a hold button so I can take my time without the scale shutting down
Assorted Pipettes, three different size measuring (Milliters) cylinders with pour spout and base.
Gloves (no glasses needed I will just wear my normal glasses)

Flavorings...

From Real Flavors .http://www.realflavors.com/Warm Apple Cider - Super Concentrate - 1oz Ă— 1
Baklava - Super Concentrate - 1oz Ă— 1

From DIY Flavorshack. (I won a $25 Gift Card awhile back) . http://www.diyflavorshack.com/default.asp

AR Cigar Dom Rep (PG) DIY Flavoring [Flavors Array Sizes:1oz]
AR Tropical Mix (PG) DIY Flavoring [Flavors Array Sizes:1oz]
Shacks Expert Dragon Fruit Flavoring DIY [DIY Flavorings Glass Vials:1 oz Plastic bottle]

From Bull City Flavors.. https://store-q51ae6vv.mybigcommerce.com/account.php?action=view_order&order_id=140199

1 x Pumpkin Pie (Spice)-Cap (Size: 30ml)
1 x Cohiba-SC (Size: 10ml)
1 x Black For Pipe-INW (Size: 30ml)
1 x Eggnog-FLV (Size: 15ml Original Packaging)
1 x Strawberry Cheesecake-LB (Size: 30ml)

From what I can tell, all of these flavors are good to go on their own. I plan on keeping it simple for the time being while I am learning to make a 50/50 PG/VG 6 mg base and then add flavors. There will be time for recipes later once I have mastered the basics.

An interesting side note. About a month or so aga, Real Flavors ran a sale on their super concentrates here on the forum. I did not take advantage of it because at that time I was not sure about trying my hand at diy but I did make a note about their company for future reference.

When you look at their website, it looks like they are manufacturing flavorings for the food and beverage industry and no mention of using their product for the manufacture of E-Liquids.

As they say, "Look Before You Leap" so I sent them an email full of questions. And I was amazed about how quickly they got back to me.

Apparently the "Super Concentrate" Flavors they manufacture are VG based and well suited for E-Liquid production. The only reason they don 't mention anything about E-Liquids and Vaping on their website is just like a lot of other companies they are worried about the FDA and covering their asses

Anyway my friends, that is where things stand at the moment and the stalking of UPS and the USPS "Lazy Mail Bitch" has commenced:D

As always my ears are on :tldr:for any comments, advice or suggestions!

One hint for your first mixes, start low with the flavors. You can always add more, but it's a royal pain to take away.

Excellent Point!

I have always preferred stronger flavors.

Would 3/4 of the recommended top amount be a good place to start?

I would start at the least amount recommended. Like I said you can always add more and you may find with certain brands like FA and FLV that less is more.

1 x Cohiba-SC (Size: 10ml)

During the past 2 or so years I've sometimes used that flavor in my cigar mixes. It's a good flavor add on but fades quickly. If you are making a mix that you wish to age for a month or so, I suggest not adding any until the last 3-4 days. Heck, I'll sometimes add a drop or 2 to a 5-7 ml squonk bottle, wait a day or so and then vape away.

I'm fussy regarding my cigar mixes and don't care for it on a stand alone basis. YMMV

It's been at least 2 years since I've made a cigar mix that did not contain some of my homemade room temperature maceration cigar NET. (Think real steeping) If you like cigar vape juice, you may wish to look into that...

One more thing you probably already know or have read, UncleRJ...mix up small amounts to start with for testing your flavors. Like 3 or 5 ml or so and keep track of how much you add. This will prevent a lot of waste of materials on juice you may not care for.

Once you get a mixture you like, then go big with it and vape on! :D

What do you mean by "Fades Quickly"?

And making a mix to age for a month and then adding the flavor component? I don't understand unless the origional mix including flavor is steeped for a month and then more flavor is added before use?

I have only experience with store bought liquids and I can't recall any of them losing flavor over time.

Granted that I am as not quite as smart as a bag of hair when it comes to DIY (but slowly but surely I am learning a lot from the VU Peanut Gallery) so I am sure I will be getting answers that I really don't understand so like above, an answer will lead to more questions :headbang:

Now keep in mind that like most guys when I get a new "Toy" I want to play with it immediately so I am certain that I just won't have the willpower to make my first mix and set it aside for a couple of week.:(

That being said, I own a very nice 2 Litre Ultrasonic cleaner complete with a thermostat controlled heating element and the plan at the moment is that when I have mixed my first batch I will seal the glass jar that I mixed the E-Liquid in and place it in the UC with the water only coming up to the level of the liquid in the jar and start the puppy. BTW I have been told by another member that when using the heater keep the temp to 150 or less.

All of that being said when I get to the point (hopefully sooner rather than later) where I am constantly making tasty E-Liquids I will make them in larger batches (like 120ml bottles) and put them away to steep for a couple of weeks just as I do with my store bought products.

And again, thanks all for trying to teach this old vaper a new trick!:D

For example...Mix a juice...shake & Vape...taste...taste the next day...age for a week...and it tastes like it has less flavor strength of day one or two. Some mixes will taste the same. It's also possible that one flavor in the mix can fade and others become more prominent.

FA Lemon Sicily is known to fade...others too at varying rates.

For example you mix...

3-4% INW TA Cuban Cigar (WG)
2% INW Dark Tobacco
1.5% INW DNB
and your pg/vg/nic. base
Age for 26 days and Then add the SC Cohiba. 30 days vape away.

Or...you can add the Cohiba on day 1. Shake & Taste. Age 30 days. Taste. You will ask yourself.."Where did the Cohiba flavor go?"...then add more Cohiba. ;)

I don't use heat. Mixing or ageing.

Oh, I'm so happy you are doing this!! Fyi, most citrus flavors fade or mellow.

I'm not into weight mixing, but if you have a bottle of juice where the flavor seems to have faded to say a 12 ml. bottle you can always add a drop or 2 at a time, shake and taste on an rda until it tastes good to you. Also, if your flavor is too strong you can add some of your base of pg/vg/nic that you pre mixed up.

Also, very important to shake your flavor bottle real well before dispensing flavoring to your base because many flavors separate.

Good luck!!! You will do fine. I was nervous at first, afraid to try, but I think you will be amazed at how much better diy juice tastes.

Where is the best bang for the buck for high quality Nic from a company with great customer service?

I like EcigExpress, simply because there are choices BETWEEN 30ml and a whole damn liter -- anytime I think, hmm, maybe I oughta add some more nic to my stash, I usually order a half-liter from ECX. Because a) it's easier for me to make room in my freezer for a half liter than a liter, considering there's already almost 3 liters in there, and b) I have enough brown glass bottles to decant a half-liter into, but for a whole liter, I'd have to buy more.

For a while, I was buying Vaperstek TH Nicotine, but I'll be honest, I really can't tell a bit of diff between it and the nic I get from either wizlabs or ECX. As long as nicotine is fairly fresh, not oxidized (clear or very nearly, not yellow or pink-tinged), there really isn't much difference between different vendors' brands of nicotine. If you really really hate TH, you could spend twice as much and get some of that "ultrapure" nicotine, but I'm not sure it's any better than any other.
