OBS Engine Nano vs Original Crown RBA - Flavor Comparison

Hello fellow vapers. I just received my Engine Nano and have been playing around with various modes and suggestions to get good flavour. The flavour isn't bad but it's a bit different than what I'm used to. Here's the setup for both tanks ...

OBS Engine Nano

SS316 Flat Wire Clapton Coil @ .35 ohms - 3.5mm ID
Temp Control 450 deg. F. - 45 Watts with 55W boost for .6 secs.
Coil height at top of the posts
Airflow about half open

Original Crown RBA

Single Wire SS316L Vertical Coil @ .57 ohms - 2.5mm ID
Temp Control 450 deg. F - 30 Watts no boost
Airflow about half open

So I've noticed a difference in flavour and vapor production using the same juice in both. The Engine is obviously running hotter which may make a difference. The Crown flavour seems a bit sweeter and less metallic. The clouds from the Crown also seem a bit denser ... thicker mouth feel anyways. Mind you I'm used to the Crown as I've been using it for quite a while now. I've blocked the back hole in the Engine with a bit of cotton. I also tried closing the airflow a bit more but that just seems to make the vape a bit warmer. I started with the wick in the Engine just slightly in the holes and later re-wicked so the ends of the cotton were just sitting on the holes.

I really like the Engine and want it to work at least as good as the Crown. I had read reports about the slightly muted flavour but thought using a Clapton Coil would boost the flavour a bit. BTW - This is the first time that I've used a Clapton Coil. I also have a spool of GeekVape SS316 Caterpillar Wire which I haven't tried in the Engine yet. For a truly even comparison I could try a similar Single Wire SS316L coil in the Engine but I really expected more from the Clapton so I'm a bit surprised actually.

I have several thoughts about my experience but want to get others' suggestions as well. I may need more experience using these larger coils to dial them in correctly. And then there's the new tank / new coil scenario where these things sometimes take a bit of time to break in. I know that when I first got the Crown I wasn't blown away either until I'd used it for a while and got the hang of things. While I love the Crown I also REALLY like the ease of building, the wicking, the fill method and variety of coils I can use on the Engine. Oh ... and my Crown does leak on occasion which I don't think will be an issue with the Engine.

Sorry for the long post but wanted to make sure I covered everything. So any thoughts, ideas or suggestions any of you have that may help to alleviate my slight disappointment would be appreciated.

I am running the Nano with SS316L 26/30 spaced claptons, 3mm id, nothing fancy. AF is 2/3 open, rayon wicks are partially tucked underneath the coil. Flavor is exactly the same as I'm getting from my Kayfuns, only a bit warmer.

I run non spaced 2.5 26 wrapped with 36 316l. 5 wrap. Seem to get better wicking with 2.5 than 3. Wicking is the most important thing to me. As far as leaking mine has never leaked. Best tank for that by far.

There's a thread on ECF for the Engine Nano building for flavor has been discussed extensively. Check it out.

HA ... Not too often somebody from this forum sends you to ECF. LMAO. I've already read several of the threads there which is why I blocked off the smaller hole and changed the wicking up a bit. I didn't really notice much difference from either adjustment though. I'm thinking that if the airflow hole that's across from the coil was a bit lower it may help a bit. I may try pulling the coil towards the hole a bit more.

So nobody thinks that the tank and/or coil breaking in longer will make much of a difference??

It may also help to raise the coil up higher and a bit closer to the airhole to make sure the air is coming at the bottom of the coil. I've found it makes a big difference.

So I've tried moving the coil around and wicking several different times. I tried a simple .6 ohm 24g SS316L coil and for the last couple of days a .3 ohm SS316L Caterpillar coil. The Caterpillar coil has good clouds and decent flavour. But still not as good as my Original Crown with a .57 ohm 26g SS316L vertical coil in it.

I'm thinking that the bottom airflow on the Crown is what's giving it better flavour. And while I'm getting good cloud production on the Engine Nano the clouds on the Crown are denser with more of a creamy feel to them. I'm not giving up though. I'll keep trying with this Engine for a while to see if I can nail it down. But if I can use less power and juice on a simple coil in the Crown and can't at least match that density and flavour on the Engine then it may just become another backup tank.
