hi guys/ gals
i have a smok r80 with the standard tank. iv had it about a year now and i admit i have dropped it a few times :( but my problem is this. sometimes i get a harsh taste in the back of my throat with no flavor and sometimes i get full flavors! its kind of making me not want to use it much as its like a Russian roulette i either get lovely flavors or shot in the back of my throat and makes me feel short of breath/ wheezy, also note this has only happened since i have started making my own juice, buuuut iv asked friends who have had the same batch of juice iv made and they have said its fine!? i have changed the coils and makes no difference. i did however put my tank on to a friends mod last night and it tasted completely different. could the mod cause this? i had planned on changing my tank to an rda as i want to build my own coils anyway as i thought the tank was causing the issue as the air flow ring at the bottom of the tank moves because of where iv dropped it it has bent ever so slightly. dont know how the glass has survived so long.
anyway enough waffle any help would be much appreciated!

Hi there and welcome to VU, Some things could be causing that , from the PG/VG make up of your juice, you could be sensitive to one or the other or even the strength of the nicotine . Another thing could be the tank and or the coil, lot of things could be factoring in . More details about the juice and tank could possibly help.

Welcome
based on your description my best guess is its the settings of your mod.
But as whiskey said it could be numerous things
so here's some questions that will help someone figure this out
1. what tank are you using - a quick google search shows me that the r80 may come with the micro tv4 tank...is that the one you have?
2. Which coil are you using - most tanks have several options so we need to know what material the coil wire is (ni200,kanthal,SS,Ti) and what ohms it is
3. what settings are you using - that mod can run in TC(temperature control) and straight power(watts) mode
4. what settings on the mod are you using - How many watts - if your in TC what temperature?

The only other thing I can say with out a little more info is this - Ive owned one SMOK product- it was teh koopor 200 mod
and when it died it was the fact that the mod could no longer read the resistance of the coil properly so it eaither didnt fire because it could not detect the atty or it fired improperly (which could cause he bad throat hit your getting). If a mod is reading the ohms wrong and fires it will use too much power or not enough power casuing a weak hit or a super powerful hit. What you are describing could be this - or something else - we need a little more info to help you out better

thanks for the replies guys. right
the juice i have made up is a 50/50 mix with 3mg of nicotine (vg base) all from darkstarvapor.com
the flavours are capella mixed to 16.5% a recipie i followed and when i get the flavor its awesome.
the tank is the bog standard from the box yes and coils are slightly differant from the standard it comes with but still smok they are the clp2 clapton coils. and they are made from stainless steel.
i run between 40-50w the unit has a max capacity of 80w. it does seem to drain a bit faster than it used to but i put that down to age but the drops have more than likely sped up the process of deterioration

possibly time for an upgrade then. i was already considering a rda build tank the royal hunter rda so now poss a new mod too but this time i will get one with replacement batteries!!

based on the information and lack there of,
it sound slike you are using this in power mode or at least you are trying to.

You may have it set in temp control and not be using it correctly
I dont have enough info to know how experienced you are with this stuff or if this is even the case.
but if you are familiar with TC and are sure you are not using it and using power mode

my best guess is still the mod is not reading the ohms correctly and misfiring or your settings are wrong
doing a quick google search
clp2 coils are supposed to be .3 ohms
I see nomention on multiple websites about them being stainless steel. since stainless steel in th eone material that can be used for TC or power - its unlikely for that piece of info to be left out. so your coils are probable kanthal of nichrome.
THAT MEANS DO NOT USE IN TC mode ever.
so make sure you are in power mode and not TC
if you have been only using power mode lets move on
the readout should tell you th eohms it read son the coil
as I said these clp2s are suppose to be .3 ohm so your screen should read between .28 and .38ish
if its not theres a problem - either the coil - the connection between coil and mod - or the mod
if it reads in that range then keep using it and after each puff check it - the reading should not change if the coil is made of kanthal or nichrome as i suspect. if its changing - theres a problem - either the mod or the connection between the coil and the mod

i suspect that when you get these bad hits that your screen suddenly reads a totally different resistance reading - which is making the mod supply too much power to the coil.

im using it in power mode so setting it with the watts. the coils reading .32ohms and iv never used temp mode as i dont know what i would set it too only ever used power mode.
sorry for lack of info iv generally tried to rectify problems myself so never thought about all the little bits of info to hand over haha. but thats what i find strange iv put new coils in the readings seem to be right just seems to be messing about

ok
since you are postive you rin power mode
do the following things
1. using a q-tip or something clean the 510 connection of the mod
2. make sure the screw is tight on the bottom of the tank if it has one
3. make sure the coils is installed tight
once all that is done PAY ATTENTION TO THE SCREEN before and after every puff

i will bet dollars to donuts the ohm reading changes just before or just after you get that bad hit. IF that is the case -
you need a new mod.
smok makes a wonderful mod but the one and only smok mod i owned had issues with the boardas ability to read ohms properly, and unfortunately with the way these regulate dmods are designed if that part of the board or mod starts failing - the mod is useless. And my smok mood died in like4 months of regular use which in my opinion is extremely poor results.

i myself prefer IPV mods they just seem to be more durable and work better IMHO. YMMV

Another issue could be the bent tank.
Wicking comes from the vacuum created and if the tank is bent or out of true than you may be losing vacuum and getting dry hits.
You could ask your friends if they have a tank you could borrow or swap in an attempt to rule it out as a possibility. if it happens with another tank then you know for sure that it's the mod and vice versa.

Yes I was buying a new tank anyway wanted an RDA so going for the royal hunter RDA so if it's the same with that will have to use some of my pennies I've saved from making my own juice to get a new mod. What are IPV mods? I was lookin at the Wismec Reulaux 2/3 looks a pretty durable mod
