Newbie here,

I was hoping I could start a thread where people explain the different types of coils from the basics. I've been looking online and it's honestly a little frustrating that all I can find is these advanced coil tutorials and methods, when I feel like I haven't even mastered basic theory and methods yet! Maybe we can get into the gauges and types of metals and how they effect vapor production, etc. Hopefully people in the future can see this thread as a beginner waypoint when they first start looking into coils.

Again, thanks in advance to this forum and the community here, you guys are always helpful

I highly appreciate this thread. I actually figured coils out on my own through experimenting with different number of wraps and gauges of wire, and I don't watch tutorials for any of my builds. I come up with them on my own, and I never get confused. Starting from the ground up is actually super beneficial, and this thread will be great for kick-starting many new builders into the coiling world.

Have you done any builds yet, or are you looking for a basic idea? Your chosen device and/or RDA will be good info to give on this thread.

My setup right now is with prebuilt fused claptons. Core is measured at 28GA and wrapped its 32GA. Also the resistance is measured to be .5 ohms but on my mod it's measured at .22 ohms. Not really sure why it's different on the mod either. It seems claptons are the most basic coil type and thats what was on my rta when i bought them, which explains why i bought them once my stock coils broke. And my mod is a snow leopard 150W and I'm using the Smok tf-rta.

I think what i am desiring most from this thread is instead of just looking for the HOW (how to wrap triple-omega clapton staple staggered alien crossover), maybe getting into more of the WHY's (Why 28GA might work better than this or that, or kanthal vs stainless steel, etc. etc.). I feel this will set up beginner builders, like myself, for success in understanding how to select our builds better.

Also, what are you using for your build so far bro?

First, welcome to VU.

I'm not seen advanced builder by any means. I haven't even mastered claptons yet myself LOL. I deal strictly in stainless steel myself when building my own coils. I also use an app called Vape Tool on my Android phone. It is a great tool to have. Whatever you do, don't get discouraged. There is alot on YouTube to help you learn as well. I have watched a series from The Art of Vaping that was alot of help and I think the Squidood (I think I spelled it right) has a good tutorial as well. I love building and still have a TON to learn. Just have fun. Taking 3 pieces of wire and twisting then together to coil up is a good first "advanced" build. Not to complicated, but a great vape.

I hope this helps to get you started. And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask anybody here. The Post Your Builds thread is a great place to get alot of help from the best builders on the forum as well.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

My current build is a chainlink 26ga. It's posted in the coils thread. I came across it on my own, named it, and then found out it had already gotten on the internet under that name by several others XD it's my favorite build ever, and it's fairly simple.

Midknight420's suggestion to use the vape tool app is good. I use that for all my builds to find out what a good wattage range will be. It's EXTREMELY simple and very user friendly.

As a basis for why one gauge works better than others, I can try to put it simply. They say more surface area equals more flavor and more vapor. So in theory, a bigger wire, or more wraps, would give bigger surface area, right? However, bigger wire means lower resistance as well, resulting in unnecessary heat, more risk, counter productive ramp up times, and other subjective issues. More wraps can create issues as well. So the basic goal of coil building for an individual is to find a personal favorite balance between surface area and resistance.

Example: if I were to build a coil out of 30ga wire with a bunch of wraps to get a good surface area, it would heat up way too quickly and burn at high wattages. So in turn, I build a coil out of 22ga, a much thicker wire, to counter the crazy fast ramp up. This coil has a very low resistance, takes awhile to ramp up and when it does it gets too hot, hits way too hard, and then I accidentally overdose on 6mg juice(true story). SO. I decide to shoot the middle, and build a nice 26ga coil with a smaller amount of wraps than my previous tries. This coil has a nice even ramp up, not too much heat, and doesn't kill me with nicotine. Goal accomplished.

Everyone has their own preference in building. I find a solid balance between surface area, heat, and other elements by using a simple dual 5 wrap twisted 26ga coil. That's my go to quick build. It's all up to the individual to decide what works best for them. I don't like Claptons, they freak me out. I prefer twisted stuff because it's the best simple build for good flavor and vapor production. If you need any simple build advice, hit me up.

Tl;dr lower gauge wire=lower resistance typically, everyone develops a preference.

Side note: I only use kanthal. It's survived the test of time longer than any other wire types that have become popular recently.

@TRONCAT I have to ask, why do claptons freak you out? lol. And what kind of ramp up times do you have before you really start hitting on your setup? I feel like mine takes quite a while. It feels like 3 seconds before my coils heat up, but they rip hard once they do. Is that similar for you? and also when you're referring to your wire ga, are you referring to the core or the ga once it's wrapped?

@midknight420 this app is dope! It's a must have for sure dude, I appreciate that. And do you have a go-to build that you have found always works well for you?

Both of you guys are awesome for this... Just another reason why I'm glad I joined VU

My favorite build I have done thus far has been 3x29g twisted. I build in stainless steel so the resistance is lower. I have a dual coil setup in my Lush rda at 7 wraps each 3mm coils. It ramps up fast and hits hard. It is a warm vape at 95w, but the flavor and clouds are insane. I am thinking of trying the same build in my new Combo Tank on my day off actually. A great conversation piece too

@midknight420 newbie question: so by 3x29g you mean three wires? and pics (if feasible) would be sweet just to see how the end result looks for you guys.

Yes, 3x29g means 3 29 gauge wires. And here is a pic of the build.

I wasn't referring to Claptons at all when I was talking about different gauges, just normal coils. My current chainlink setup has a very quick ramp up and doesn't get too hot so it's great. The flavor off of it is better than clapton in my opinion.

I don't like Claptons for several reasons.
-they look weird
-if you don't wrap then perfectly the outer wire can become uneven
-every time I've tried to use them, my cotton gets caught in the wraps and becomes a hassle
-they re too damn hard to make
-if you don't want to make them, the prebuilts are expensive. I'm a broke college kid, I dont have extra cash for prebuilts coils. I don't even use a drill for my twisted builds. I use a little paper clasp to clamp my wire down on something and then wrap the other end on a pen and twist away. It works extremely well, just takes time

For a year and a half, my go to build in darn near everything was a simple 8 wrap 26 gauge kanthal A1 with a 2 mm ID. In a dual coil this would reliably come in around 0.4 Ohms. This produced only a 10 Amp draw on my 20 Amp Samsung 25r batteries in my REO Grand mechanical squonkers. The ramp up time was reasonable, not too hot, not too cold, reasonable cloud production and decent flavor. To me this is a great general purpose, quick, and easy build.

Now I have found the joys of fused Claptons in various gauges, but for a quick easy build I can't beat the 26 gauge 8 wrap.
