Have you been hit with a shipping fee for merchandise you ordered (or won)?

-There are some of us getting hit with delivery fees from shipping companies.
- I was hit with a bill from FedEx for $20.46 3 weeks later and the vendor refunded me.
- Also, has your package been searched by our lovely Border and Customs Control?
- Yesterday I received a TEXT from DHL advising of a delivery tomorrow. One member was advised to pay $32.00 for the package. He refused delivery. I'm curious what will happen tomorrow. Because it's a mod I REALLY want.

Let's keep track of WHOTF and WTF they're charging us! Photos welcome.

Here's my first one.

I certainly been hit with excessive DHL chareges. I order from HiLiq quite often and have never been hit with out of area delivery charges. I live 13 km from Hobart Tas., CBD. I go to order from Focalecig...pay their advertised DHL price for delivery to me. Two days latter I get an email demanding an extra $26US claiming stating I lived in a rural area....What a load of B.S.....I phoned DHL Melbourne they also told me this is B.S. The slimeballs were trying to rip me off. I told Focalecig to F...off and cancelled the order. Was refunded....bought the product in Oz and for the freight Focalecig wanted it was cheapee to buy from an Australian vendor delivery express post.

Moving towards a tobacco free World!

Thanks for the heads up about this occurring. I was unaware the shipper could come after you for additional money after paying the vendor for the shipping method.Haven't had that ever happen.

@Trixy , sort of related, What was in the package that was inspected by customs? Just curious what made it through their inspection.

I have yet to be hit up with ANY extra shipping costs from anyone I have ordered from. I wouldn't pay it if I was, and I would demand a paypal refund immediately if it did happen.

I have also never had a package opened by customs. I would imagine it happened because of the amount of stuff you are ordering in a year, OR the vendor you bought from has got caught doing something they shouldn't.

I have gotten hit a couple of times with Customs charges. Let me emphasize that the charge was from customs even though the bill came from the shipping company ( which I want to say was FedEx). What happened is that the shipping company paid the fee to get the package to you on time and then turns around and bills you for it. It's not the fault of the shipping company.

If you import a package worth over 'X' amount, you're supposed to pay customs fees. Generally the Chinese supplier will put a small dollar amount on the invoice to help you avoid that Customs fee (which is technically illegal according to US laws).

The bill from the shipping company can come in weeks/months later.

For the people that have been getting hit with customs charges, does it say in the paperwork the item number or tax number you are being charged for? I have been combing through some customs paperwork on importing taxes and want to pinpoint exactly what they are hitting everyone with so I can post the % tax they expect us to pay for our items.

Mine was 3$ Custom Charge, 10$ Fedex Charge and 2$ tax...

But the (in this case) FedEx fee was only charged because of the Customs fee. FedEx paid the fee for you, then had to turn around and bill you for it. This is a service that costs them time/money to provide and they charge a fee for it. If there had been no Customs fee, there would have been no FedEx fee.

I had the same thing happen but I am in the US and the Fed Ex guy had me sign for my GB prize- about 10 days later I get a bill from Fed Ex for $20.23!
Highway robbery- driver never told me of any extra fees, if I knew about this extra charge I would have refused the package. I paid that bill with a Postal Money order as my local Fed Ex would not take payments and didn't want to pay that fee with my credit card.
June from Gear Best reimbursed me for the charge- I think that was very nice of her, as this was a charge that no one saw coming and not her fault.
Is it just shipments from China?
I order from my US vendors all the time and my packages are delivered by USPS and so far no charges!
I have never ordered from China- and have only had to deal with this because of the GB contest. Because it was shipped Fed Ex?
I would rather deal with US vendors- nothing price wise that interests me from China, along with the long delivery time- someone here said because they saved a dollar. I would rather have my items quickly and to tell you the truth some of them are much cheaper than GB, FT and others, also get my package without it being stuck and opened by US Customs!
I understand that there are others not from the US and must order from China- I just don't think here in the US that you are stuck ordering this way, many great online vendors here, if you shop around.

It was a prize. it cost 0$ Here in Canada we don't pay tax on Prizes... GB should not have labelled it as me paying for it.

Oh I'm actually willing to pay the charge, it was a DNA75 Device lols so 15$ is peanuts, problem is I don't have online banking but trying to find someone that does to pay it for me as it gets kicked out of the system when it shows the trasaction ID paid, GB also offered to refund me when I told them however I don't use Paypal as odd as that may seem... Hopefully they'll just add it to my GB wallet as I order from there all the time ^__^

Yes- you were the 1st that got hit with this "fee" in the GB Aster contest! I was hoping I wouldn't get hit with this fee, but No, lol! Poor June at Gear Best- she did make good on that fee. I am just leery now of some of these contests. If I won an Expensive DNA mod I would have been Ok with that fee- but the Aster, wouldn't have been free and the cost of that is the same as the fee. Read on another ecig board of a guy going thru the same with Heavens Gifts Estoc Tank contest, seemed like he was the only one hit with this "fee" thru DHL and they wanted $32.00! That was a $20.00 tank. He was going to PM the contest host , but has not written back on what happened!
At least I am a little more aware of these possible fees!

I received 2 DHL packages this week. First thing I asked him was if there was a fee associated with the parcel. He said no, you paid it when you paid for shipping. Hmmm. He also said that if there was, I would be billed through DHL office. We'll see.

I'm ordering through GB now. It clearly states in their Terms and Conditions that any fee is the burden of the buyer. But they're now charging shipping.

After pouring through the customs papers, it does say that as buyers we are responsible for the import tax, whatever that may be depending on the item in question. Only problem is I haven't found what ecig items are classified under yet. So I can't give a this is the percentage of tax we can expect to get as a bill from customs at some point if they feel like charging. This is also the reason that foreign companies are placing a price tag on our items, so they can charge a tax on whatever we paid for the item. Thankfully companies are doing a favor to their customers by placing a lower price tag on the items we buy, well at least on packaging.

I feel responsible to find this info out for the group so we can be certain of any fees that may come our way. Well, back to the paperwork I go.

Hi Lotus- I am looking at my Fed Ex Bill and the break down of the bill is
Customs Duty
U.S. Food & Drug Admin Processing Fee - $20.00
Total Duties,Tax,Customs, Other Fees - 0.23
Total FedEx Express - $20.23

My Bubblewrap envelope was opened and not taped up when I received it. Lucky nothing fell out!
The bill also states that
Air Waybill Commodity Description - Full Set Of Atomizer Device No Nicotine
Funny that the eLeaf Aster was just the mod with No tank or external 18650 battery. Full Set?

I am curious why they hit you with a processing fee since they have to process everything that comes through. I believe I found the actual number everything we buy falls under. Pretty much they will expect us to pay a 2.6% tax on the stated value of the product imported. Now getting back to your processing fee...Alright, after digging for the last half hour, I found why they are trying to charge you the $20 processing fee. It appears that the FDA are full of themselves, they have a process were if they think an item being imported is against one of their laws, they can examine the product, but then, after examining it, they can send you a bill for them doing their job they get paid to do. The form is FD-790 and I kept a link, though it is to the FDA website, so some may stay away from it. In the form they can charge for investigators time, analysts time, per fiem paid per government travel regulations, automobile use, other travel expenses and miscellaneous items. So pretty much we get the bill for them to go do their job and also pay for their snickers bar they bought with their coffee.

But that Fed Ex- FDA charge of $20.00 stays with Fed Ex- I think it is because of adult signature and or ID check? Extra expense incurred by Fed Ex for this service?

Oh No - yesterday I broke my own rules about ordering from China! I placed an order with FastTech but checked the free shipping by USPS- fingers crossed. So far I have not been hit by any fees from USPS, but then again I usually only order from US vendors!
I will let you know in a month or two when my mods are delivered- LOL!

Fasttech has been much faster with delivery than any other China supplier for me. Usually I receive my orders 8-15 days after shipment.

Has anybody been hit with additional charges on Chinese shipments that arrive through USPS, like China Post, Registered, etc.?

I'm hoping these charges are only hitting DHL and Fedex orders.

So far.

As a matter of fact. there is a line on your federal taxes (or form) you are required to fill out for import duties if you purchases items overseas.

However, the FDA working at customs is news to me. There are times when customs will open suspect and random packages. I was unaware that the FDA has employees working at customs to inspect ecig items.

THE FDA will make a KILLING if they can charge 20+ bucks a package on imports. They will kill vaping if they can tax the shit out of stuff coming with no way around it.

Yea- but when I checked my status one of the mods won't be ready to ship out til Oct25, didn't say anything about that when I placed the order, oh well I really want these mods and cannot find any online except for FastTech. Will they hold up the other and ship them both around Oct 25?

Oops just saw that one takes 7 business days to ship. Funny I didn't see that when I placed the order.

Sometimes they will split a shipment.

You can also ask that they split shipments. But be aware if they do, you may not get them shipped the fastest carrier OR get tracking numbers for both shipments.

So far I think it is hit or miss- not to many on any forums talking about this "fee"- Besides China ships all over the world, but yes could potentially harm US customers and their sales.
Mine was because I won a contest, not sure how GB filled out that form for shipping, I didn't pay for shipping since it was a prize. Maybe that is why we got hit?

Thanks- I can wait, I am in no rush- these are wants not needs, LOL! I really shouldn't spend the money and I am fully stocked for whatever lays ahead.

Edit Update- I got sick of being jerked FT did not apparently have in stock when I ordered it and kept changing arrival dates , what if they couldn't ever get it? Cancelled this- but got in touch with Gear Best and ordered it thru them today- they had it in stock and have already shipped it out today!
Wow -Thanks to June at GearBest as it said sold out or I would have ordered it thru Gear Best to begin with!

Nope. Plus, it was one of the reasons I ordered from FT, because I knew I wouldn't have to go through DHL or FedEx. That, and they're faster than GB, IME.

I agree with @Lotus Insane about China putting only $5.00 on the customs label for a $40 tank or mod. Mine said $5.00 for the Origo contest AIO from DHL. We'll see. Oh, and my bank Visa is charging a fee for international charges. By the time you get slapped with 4-5 invoice of around $20, you could have purchased a mod!

Most CC companies charge a fee for international sales. My Chase and Discover do too.

But most of the time I work around it using PayPal. Not often I get hit with a fee for it.

Look at the fees this way for the time being:
Small orders of a mod or a tank are not worth the $20 fee. Orders of 100+ dollars are, simply because of being able to buy twice as much stuff for the same money. Local shops are usually 100% or more markup.

Just split your 20 dollar fee over the items you ordered. If you ordered 20 items, it's only a buck more per item.

From the paperwork I was digging in, it doesn't sound like the FDA actually works at customs, they just get called in when customs finds something that they don't know if it falls under an FDA regulation or not.

Has anybody been hit with additional charges on Chinese shipments that arrive through USPS, like China Post, Registered, etc.?
I have gotten two packages from China through USPS and didn't have a fee on them, but they were labeled as electronic gadget. So they may have skirted around customs.

I would find that really strange as well.
First, how would any customs people know what devices are legal or not? If the FDA has a "list" of legal devices, then there would be no need to contact the FDA.
Secondly, unless they opened it, they wouldn't know what device was in there anyway. That info isn't listed on the export paperwork, as far as I know.
Third, if the FDA isn't actually THERE to inspect, why are we getting hit with fees anyway? It's custom's JOB to inspect when necessary. Seems like the FDA is just randomly attaching a tax to ecig packages.

I can answer your secondly the quickest, the first one would take time to write out as well as the third. All packages that are coming into the country have to have a list of items on the outside of the package for customs, so they can try to sort things based on item and "act accordingly." That is why I wrote my items had electronic gadget written on them and I was happy.

China is working around the fees also. I wonder if they get dinged on their end. I noticed they listed several items on one customs form also.
I've never had a problem with USPS on the ePackets.
I'm about to have China catch up with me and I just placed a few orders with US sellers last night. Let's see how much vape mail I get. lol

Got a DHL for another prize I won from China. I asked the driver immediately if there was a fee and he said no, that I paid it with my shipping cost. Hope I don't get slapped in 2 weeks. Good to see that no one has been billed again yet.

I live in Canada, land of outrages shipping fees and a $20 customs limit. What I've learned is to NEVER use a courier (FedEx, Ups, etc). Be a little more patient and use USPS or epacket and you'll rarely if ever pay any fees.

Yeap, couriers will profit big time from customs charges, getting dinged on a package on Monday (not vaping stuff)... Even if its just 3$ in custom fees they charge you another 15$ for dealing with the custom fees...
