SMOK has come a long way since their SMOK XPRO M80 early last year which was a fail. Since then SMOK has really stepped up their game and their mods continue to improve in design and innovation. The H-Priv 220W TC mod is one of SMOK’s new releases this year which has a very different and intriguing design. If you have been following up with their previous releases you can tell that the H-Priv looks similar to its predecessor, the XCube 2 which was released last year and their R200 mod combined to give you the best balance of design and power. A massive thumbs up to SMOK for including a battery safety card who newbies who are unaware of battery safety.

The H-Priv is definitely one of the best looking mod in its price range. The first thing that catches your eye when looking at this mod is its zinc body case and the red fire button. The zinc alloy case makes this mod significantly lighter and smaller in size than other dual battery mods such as the IPV5 which is made of Aluminum alloy. The paint work on this mod seems to be pretty good and it isn’t a finger-print magnet like the XCube 2 or the IPV5. I personally love the weight and the rectangular design of this mod which makes it very comfortable in the hand and easy to carry around. The mod is available is 3 colours – black, white and silver with red trims. The one thing you notice is that this mod does not have the traditional firing button like other mods but rather, it has a red triangle on one side of the mod which is the firing mechanism and all you have to do is squeeze it gently to fire.

The screen and adjustment buttons for this mod is situated on top of the mod. You might think that due to this, 25mm tanks will block the screen but it doesn’t. I have used an Aromamizer Supreme which didn’t block my screen or have an over-hang. The display screen on this mod is quite large and the details aren’t cramped up but rather easy to read. The positioning of the screen does make it easier to view all the information while vaping but also makes it possible to cause damage to the mod due to a leaky tank. SMOK have confirmed that the protective glass keeps the juice from getting into the display but the buttons aren’t insulated in any way which could also cause problems should juice enter through it.

The H-Priv offers 4 options in the menu:

1. Mode – Here you have ‘WATT’ mode which allows you customize the strength. This is something similar to the pre-heat function in the Sigelei 213 and helps with the ramp up time. You can set it to Minimum, Soft, Normal, Hard or Max.

‘Temp’ mode is the temperature control mode which works pretty much similar to other mods. You can set your preferred wattage, wire type (Ni, Ti, SS) and the TCR value for your wire type. ‘Memory’ Mode allows you to set 16 wattage settings which could be useful if you change your atomizers often and don’t want to reset the wattage each time manually.

2. Puffs – Allows you to set a puff limit if you wish to do so.

3. Settings – Here you have:

· ‘Scr Time’ which is Screen time. This allows you to enable stealth mode or disable it.

· ‘Scr lock’ which is Screen lock. It allows you to enable auto-lock or disable it.

· ‘Contrast’ allows you set the screen brightness (10%-100%).

· ‘Scr Dir’ lets you change your screen orientation.

· ‘Time’ allows you to set the time and date (this cannot be viewed on your main screen).

· ‘Adj Ohm’ enables you to adjust the resistance of your coil by a few decimals.

· ‘Download’ this mode is for updating the mod but it wasn’t required for me to enable when updating mine so I’m not really sure how this mode is relevant.

4. Power – Switch off the mod.

Temp Control works with all the usual wire types: Nickel, Titanium, and Stainless Steel and TCR values for each wire type are user-adjustable. Both Wattage and Temp modes offer different “outputs” — Max, Min, Hard, Norm, and Soft. In addition to Wattage Mode and Temp Mode, the H-Priv also offers “Memory Mode.” The device will remember 16 different power settings (M1 all the way to M16).

One of the most annoying things about this mod is the battery door. The battery door on the H-Priv mod detaches from the device. It is quite easy enough to remove it from the mod but putting it back in place after swapping out the batteries can be a real pain. SMOK should have just created the battery cover with a permanent hinge which would make it a lot easier for the user to open to and close it. I’m not sure why SMOK hasn’t already used the hinge method as yet because their method makes it a real pain especially since you have to remove batteries each time for charging.

Overall, I think this is a great kit for the price. According to DJLSB this mod can go up till 220w but only with a 0.12 Ohm coil otherwise you will be reaching the devices voltage limitations. On the firmware which comes with the mod there is a firing delay which SMOK has now fixed in an update and made the device almost instantaneous. I haven’t used temperature control personally but according to DJLSB it’s fairly accurate.

The battery life is as great as any other dual battery mod however I do feel that my IPV5 battery life does seem to be a tad bit longer and that maybe due to the YiHi chip. So far I’ve been using this mod daily and vaping at 50w my battery lasts me about a day and a half or longer (using LG HG2).

Here are some of the cons with this mod:

  1. The battery door.
  2. Having the buttons and screen on the top may cause damage to the device if juice has to seep through it. I have also noticed that the screen tends to get fogged up due to vapor exiting from the airflow of the tank. This isn’t such a big deal; I usually just wipe it and continue.
  3. This mod cannot be charged via usb cable and will require an external charger.

Micro TFV4 Tank

The tank that comes with this mod is the SMOK Micro TFV4. SMOK’s TFV series tanks are known for their great flavor and vapor production and this one is no exception. The tank holds 2.5ml of juice but it can be extended to a 3.5ml capacity using the larger glass tube and included extension adapter. It also produces insane amounts of vapor for its size, even at lower wattage levels. The Micro TFV4 is compatible with all micro TFV4 coil heads, as well as two – one single coil and one dual coil – RBA deck that are sold separately. So far I’ve used both the included coils and for me, the included SS coil performed exceptionally well in terms of flavor. The drip tip they include with the tank is a wide bore delrin drip tip which can be removed. This tank does seem to go through juice so you should keep a unicorn bottle with you if you plan on going out with it.

The SMOK H-Priv 220W TC box mod is currently available either as a Mod Kit (containing only the box mod only) or a Full Kit (bundled with a SMOK TFV4 Micro Sub-Ohm Tank).

You can get the mod from HERE for $54. I think SMOK really did a good job with this mod in both, aesthetics and performance. I think this is a fantastic starter kit for someone who wants great flavor and clouds without having to worry about building coils. For the price, I think its a great setup. I've been using mine for a while now and its really nice. The firing button is really nice, at first I thought it will be crap but I'm really liking it. I love the different modes (Hard, Norm, Soft, Max), This feature is really useful when using an RDA or a tank because it helps with the ramp up a lot.

If you guys have any questions on this mod feel free to leave a comment and I will answer it to the best of my ability. I hope you guys enjoyed my honest review on it.

EDIT:
Just found out that you can get it cheaper than me using this link HERE

I love SMOK stuff. The 510 connector on the one I gave to my son took a dump ! Shame I liked the mod. Don't even think there's a real spring in it. Just plastic. I took it apart and kind of got it working again but its going in the garbage. When it misreads the ohms you can get a crazy hit that can burn your lungs out !

Mine works great, so far I haven't had any issues with my 510 but then again I have only used it for a few weeks now. In fact, I would say the 510 is better than my RX200s 510 pin. The RX200s has one of the shittiest 510 pins.

I'm looking at getting one of those myself. SMOK is doing a damn good job with aesthetics recently. The Alien is absolutely beautiful

For me SMOK is the brand of the time. Their tanks and mods are excellent. Just my opinion anyway. To each his own and whatever works for them.

You are 100% correct. Their tanks are incredible. The TFV8 is one of the best tanks on the market that takes coils and is rebuildable. It produces excellent flavor also.

A good review here! I received mine for review a few days ago, I know I am a bit late but it was from China- so far I am really liking the mod.

I am using the included TFV4 Micro, which I didn't have high expectations for, and thought I would swap it for something else quickly- however I am using the 0.3 fused clapton coil that comes pre installed in the tank, and I am really liking it! It states between 30-60W, I have found 42W to be a nice setting, nice warm vapour and for a small tank, plenty of cloud too.

TC so far seems a lot better than older SMOK devices, I need to try a few more builds though to get a real idea of its performance.

Battery life is great, and is very acceptable for a dual 18650 device. I only have puffs to go by- a set of VTC4's with around 20 charge cycles lasted around a day and a half at 42W. This was around 230 puffs, between 3.5-5 seconds. Not very scientific I know lol, but it seems on par with my other dual 18650 devices, maybe a little better than some.
I would say as far as battery life goes, it is on par with my SX 330 mods.

The battery door is a bit fiddly, and exactly the same as on my partners R200. I have only had to change the batteries twice so far, so will see how it is before my review, but is one part that does stand out as a weak point. In a way this is good though, if the only weak point is a fiddly door. The 510 pin is very springy, and much better than all my Joyetech devices.

I feel for the price it is available for, it is well worth it, but will see how it performs for a week or so until I give a full verdict.
