I Bought a Noisy Cricket

I was minding my own business when I checked my email and saw a Vapor Joe alert for $5 noisy crickets. I've always liked the looks of it and have been thinking about stepping outside my regulated comfort zone. I've never owned anything hit regulated mods and from what I hear, the nosiy cricket is not the best choice for someone wanting get into hybrid / mech mods.

I do understand ohms law and do a little bit of building but mainly get my coils pre-made from a local shop or Ray from this forum. To be honest, I may never use it but for $5 ($8.50 with shipping) I figured what the hell. If I do decide to use it, I plan on taking it to my local shop so they can walk me through it. I think I understand how they work for the most part but was looking to get some pointers from owners here on the forum.

Thanks

No builds under .5 Ohms. Better in the .5 to .7 Range. Use Ohms law at 8.4 volts.

I had heard that before, thanks for confirming. So provided I have the correct build, an RDA with a protruding pin (I plan on using one of my tsunami's or a Twisted messes I'm getting soon) and good batteries, will I be good to go?

I saw someone talking about those in another thread. What exactly is the advantage of the kit?
You get a magnetic switch with knurling making it easier to turn by hand. The 510 insulator would make it a bit safer, I suppose it solves the short pin issue with hybrid connections.

You will. I'd build to 90% of the batteries CDR if you want to go hot and big clouds. I built mine to 150 watts with my Twisted Messes TM2. That was just nuts. Wide open, could take a 2 second toot and it was a massive cloud. a tad too hot for me, so now I'm at roughly 115 watts. Still very warm, but tootable.

Heck for that price I grabbed one too even though I really don't need that much tootabliity.

I haven't gotten the email confirmation yet however which is concerning and the payment complete page didn't offer a invoice # ... did anybody else who ordered one experience this?

I'm going to order in the morning after I get paid, if there's any of them left, that is.

Yeah I was just thinking the same thing. I never received an email confirmation.

This should be interesting as I usually vape between 50-60w in power mode. I do enjoy the occasional hot vape when using my TFV4 or Maus tank so it should be enjoyable on occasion. I'm assuming this isn't something I'd want to throw in my pocket (with nothing else in there) because of the of the firing button?

I would'nt put it in my pocket. You are the master of your wattage, want less watts, build higher. If you like 60 watts with a dripper, build to 1.18 Ohms.

Still no confirmation email

I did finally get one at approximately 1 am ... any chance it ended up in your spam folder?

I think you may have ordered before I did so you would think you should have your confirmation by now too.

So, what toppers do you all plan on using? I love my Tsunami's (enough to buy 3 of them) I have a couple mutations and two royal hunters. Next on my list is a twisted messes squared and a Petri. As much as I would like to use one of the Tsunami's, they always leak just a little and from what I read, you don't want leaking on the cricket.

Glad you got one Mark!

Thanks! This is my first new mod since Christmas and my very first mech.

I'll be running my Mutation X v4 clone on mine.

I just looked, they're up to $6 now on the site http://www.ecig.com/noisy-cricket-mod-by-wismec.html?___SID=U - but still worth snagging one as a backup.

I have one and it sits on the shelf. Difficult to build high enough with the wire I have.

Good for you man! Just remember to make sure the 510 pin is protruding!
You know I will! My step son is big into mechs. I'll let him double check everything before I fire it up.

Mine will probably just sit on the shelf as a just in case box. I'm familiar with mech mod safety and all, but they still scare me a bit.

Just... Just my opinion.. But i would absolutely not trust the tsunami 510 pin on a hybrid, it's very very close to the threading, and adjusting it just makes it wobbly and loose.. Bad combo on a hybrid IMO

How about the mutation x? All my RDA's are mutations or tsunamis. With the exception of the royal Hunter which i don't like at all

If you're unsure about pin length and hybrids, post a pic of your atty in question. What some folks consider too short may actually be just fine. The protrusion doesn't have to be stupid long.

It's tough for me to get a good shot if it with my phone. It looks short to me but I don't know what is considered acceptable.

Place the positive post of a battery on top of that positive center pin, if the threaded (neg) part of the 510 doesn't touch the battery, in theory you are good to go. But how much gap is necessary I don't know, probably if it gets close enough it could arc over. Personally if the gap is less than the diameter of 22g wire (~.025") I think I would be a bit leery of using it.

Thanks, I'll try that out. I'm in no hurry to use the cricket so if its not looking 100%, I'm fine waiting until I have something suitable.

Ime, the pin literally just has to protrude and be secure. If you can see it poking out at all and the pin isn't migrating from that position, you're good. I dunno. I have been using hybrids for a long time, so maybe I'm just less fearful of them in general, but I really do think pretty much any pin that protrudes and doesn't slide-off is fine. I'd worry much more if the pin was loose than if it barely protruded. The real danger is with spring-loaded 510's.

I think this is one of those things where a few bad things that happened because people didn't know what they were doing has people jumping at shadows. The whole protruding pin thing has been mercilessly drilled into our heads. And yes, it is critical. But on the other hand, I don't think it's something to be overly concerned with. Either it protrudes or it doesn't! I say just give it a once or twice over, relax and enjoy the vape. Or don't use the atty. Plenty of hybrid-friendly options out there.

I think that hybrids get a bad rap for this kind of thing. In reality, it's rare to accidentally short on the negative. It's not that they can't. It's just not as easy to do as some people seem to think. They're not as scary as people make them out to be. Just don't blindly trust them and everything will be fine.

I actually had an atty (can't remember which) that had a pin mysteriously migrate UP into the base. Surprisingly enough, it didn't short on the negative when I went to fire it. The battery hit the stopper on the cap first, so it wouldn't make a connection. Lucky? Well, maybe...

That's something that rarely ever gets talked about... ...the length of the negative threaded portion. I'm looking at my snubnose screwed into an NC topper right now and the negative very obviously doesn't get past or even up to the stopper ring. I dunno if I'm going to be able to get a picture, nor do I care to. But by the looks of things, I could take the pin out and it still wouldn't short. Not going to test that, though. :p

I'm willing to bet that many male 510s are too short to short on certain hybrids - either the pin protrudes past the stopper or the battery doesn't make contact, period. I have 5 atties that are like that. That stopper ring is there for reasons... ....one of them being to keep the negative further away from the battery.
