Bear...you should give rayon a shot, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
It wicks better....zero taste - unlike cotton, lasts longer, doesn't burn easily. I was stubborn using only cotton for the longest time. One day I just tried the stockpile of rayon I had and kicked myself in the ass for not using it sooner.
I understand the scottish roll wicks better than just a traditional piece of cotton, but I've found rayon wicks better than any form of cotton. You do need to use a tighter wick because it doesn't shrink like cotton.
I hope it solves your problems my friend.

Cotton acts more like a sponge, unlike rayon, which acts like wicking material. There is a significant difference.
I too just discovered rayon recently. I was like you and only used cotton until I got a Boreas and finally tried rayon. I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not trying it sooner.
I like both cotton and rayon, but lately I've been using KGD for everything. Don't really find much difference in their wicking properties. I've changed how I use cotton though.
I watched a video a while back from someone who claimed to use way more cotton than was generally used and that he found it was better. If I remember correctly he actually wet the cotton and compressed it to be able to stuff more in. Seemed to work well enough for him so I gave it a try. It worked
. No break in time, no dry hits, flavor on par.
I don't put in that much cotton these days, but still way more than I used to, almost as much as with rayon. Eventually I set up one Mutation X with rayon and one with KGD, vaped them alternately on two mods and couldn't tell the difference. I kept vaping them until the coils needed to be cleaned which took about the same amount of time for both and both wicks were still just fine.
Works for me, but maybe I'm missing something with the rayon though I did experiment a fair bit with it when I first started using it. Anyhow, that's been my experience

I'm not sure this would work if I rocked this bad boy as a sub ohm cloud machine, but for me it seems to be working great. I can't seem to get a good angle for the JCF but believe me there is only just a little cotton showing from the top of the circle.
Hopefully these show up, I've never done pictures before.

After getting a lot more looks at it since I ordered mine within minutes of it being on STS, I wish I'da gotten just the SS and waitied on the black instead of ordering both.
The SS is just lovely.

Lucy, just a couple more days right? I have to admit the SS has really grown on me. When I really got a good look at it on some of the YT reviews I was impressed. I am sure the black one will be just fantastic looking too.

Fortunately I'm getting both, but would have had the SS a long time ago (in vape days that is) if I'd of just gotten the SS and waiting for the black.
It's all good though.

Feel you there Juicy. I'm in the same boat. Although, I have to say that the black one with it's tinted glass looks so bad ass that I'm just grateful that augvape didn't wait a month or longer to offer it. I'll have the black Merlin from STS in my hands before the silver one from FT even ships out. It may seem like a long wait, but you will still be one of the first to vape on a black Merlin and only a few days later than the first people to get a silver one.

Yeah. It's funny because when I decided to get a Boreas they black ones really called to me and I did have to wait for it.
When I ordered more I got both. Side by side, the black Boreas is way more appealing (to me). On all the vids though, the SS Merlin looks more appealing.
In the scheme of things, it really doesn't matter what color it is - it's all about the vape

On topic, I really am enjoying this RTA... I few months ago , when the Cthulhu came out I ordered one for myself and a good friend. I was also surprised at how well made it was and easy to set up. It did not end up staying with me.
It was fun to make giant clouds but it it was typical ( at least to me) of a tank made and designed for clouds not geared to flavor. Though my good buddy got hers to give flavor and gave me advise, It was hard to dial it down on the air. Many tanks geared for clouds will whistle or flood when AFC is dialed down a lot.
The Merlin I have open only 1/3 to 1/4 of the air and it does not whistle for me and though it still make a roomful of clouds the intense flavor is top notch.
This really is the best of both worlds.

Help please! My Merlin arrived by I can't get the dang thing apart at the chimney. I've tried unscrewing it from the top - the top cap comes off. I've tried unscrewing it from the bottom - the deck comes off. I've put it in the freezer and tried both ways again. Nope. That middle section is stuck together.
Any ideas of what I can do short of breaking the glass?

I love John Waters, he along with a few others really changed the way we look at what is "art" and entertainment. Some of his work really pushed the envelope of what is too much, but his humor and story telling is just wonderful. Many of his films are on my top of the constant rewatchable list.
Mine is really tight too, I did not take it apart, just washed it good and used little micro brushes to clean. I figured it will work itself apart , but for now, its not worth busting my "glass" (he he) for it.

Thanks, it's nice to know I'm not the only one. I hadn't seen anything about it scanning the thread. I may do the same for now - just looking at it sitting there waiting for me is torment!
MIne was very , very clean, gave it a quick once over with an tooth brush and little brushes in the chimney. No oily taste. Its awful not being able to just fill it and puff. Dont worry, too much.
I did not obsess too much about tanking it apart as my hands are really weak and I tend to put too much force sometimes and send my things flying across the room and hurt myself.

I used two Atty wrenches to take mine apart but a couple of elastics should do well for grip...

Ordered 1 in stainless & 1 in black from subtanksupply yesterday. Shipped this morning. Can't wait! YaY! @roxynoodle a member from "that other place" nice guy from Shanghai wanted to confirm if the black Merlin had the smoked tank. I told him based on pics from subtanksupply it does. Can you confirm so that I can let him know since Monday is Memorial Day there will be a delay in me receiving the tanks. Thanks!

I am fairly certain one of Augvape's assemblers is a body builder
Every so many Boreas were really tight, too. When these things happen to me, I use needle nose pliers, one end in each top fill hole. Usually a slight twist is all it takes.

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!! I was afraid to use the pliers but since Roxy Ok'd it, I tried it and it worked. My set up isn't pretty (a glass of wine with dinner may have contributed to that), but it sure is a nice vape! I may spend the rest of the evening contemplating how many more I'm going to order LOL! I still frequent quite a few threads over on ECF as there are some excellent folks in them. This is a much more relaxed place to be, I never got into any of the drama over on ECF, that is what Facebook is for...
On a positive note:
My Merlin is in CHARLESTON, WV 25350 right now and probably won't move till Tuesday.
I did receive some vape mail on Friday though.

Monday there is an Authentic Royal Hunter in green arriving. Also in about two weeks, I should see a Hobo 3.1, a Shenray Genelocity and a Kayfun V3 Plus 1.5... So I have a few toys to keep me busy until the Merlin gets here.
I piffed away the Theorem to a buddy, what a poorly thought out PoS! Good flavor with Rayon in the notched coil, but one broken tank and that metal sleeve on the other was glued with water soluble glue. Beside that you couldn't fill the thing without something to poke down the hole or use a dropper.
The SQuape X and SQuape Rs are my goto tanks along with the Russian 3.0 and I expect that the Merlin will be an top notch addition to the stable!

I feel the same way about the Theorem, but that upsets the fanbois. One of my glass tanks is chipped, too.
I picked up a pair of these, amazing little chummies to get tanks apart and ceramic tweezers to boot. Just threw them in the cart with my battery order for shits and giggles, and they work perfectly!
I don't mind upsetting the fanbois told them it was a PoS and as soon as my Avocado 24 arrived, the Theorem was hitting the road. I really wonder how much influence Matt from SMM had in the design of it... Form over functionality I guess...
Replace those green gummy bear base o-rings with a pair of 19x17x1 KFL tank o-rings before you use it again of give it to someone. They hold perfectly and allow for easy tank removal.
