Howdy all!

I am making my own e liquids.. have been for a few weeks now...

In a 70vg 30pg 3ml Nic mix (using Flavors Apprentice) concentrates ..i am curious as to why people recommend 10%-15% flavour? I don't know if its just me but at that ratio i find it a tad 'piss weak'
and only when it is around the 25% mark and above to i actually get a full flavoured tasting vape..(using vanilla/custard flavours)

It is a preference and opinion matter i am guessing? But with custards they are better steeped longer.. so i have heard..

I am about to do (same as above) mix above 70-30 with the following flavours ..
TFA Apple
TFA Strawberry Ripe
TFA French Vanilla

My question is ... as this is my first 'stand alone' fruit flavoured mix... should i follow recommendations?

Any thoughts?? Thank you in advance ;)

Moved to DIY General Discussion.

Personally, if you like flavors mixed lower, or higher than recommended, do what suits your taste buds. But, going too high can actually back fire and make it seem flavorless. You could start at a lower percentage, give a good shake, sample it, then wait. Taste it again a few days after, or a week later and see how it suits you. You can be surprised by how little you need sometimes.

Different brands are all over the place for a recommended starting point. Some are stronger than others, some not at all.

Hopefully someone with more experience with those flavors can help you a bit better.

Everyone's tastes are different and TFA flavors generally require a higher % than say FA or INW.

There is nothing wrong with going 25% flavor in a mix, you usually want to balance it. I have TFA Apple but haven't used it in awhile, that said most apples will dominate a strawberry. Never tried the combo of strawberry and apple, let me know if it is tasty. I would probably go 10% on the Ripe SB and 5% on the Apple, my guess an even amount the apple would dominate the strawberry and all you would taste is apple.

With TFA flavors it is not uncommon to use 10% or more of a single flavor, I have a recipe that just uses 10% whipped cream and 10% Strawberry, both TFA and it is simple and tasty.

I think when most recommend 10 to 15% total flavor they are using Flavor Art or Inawera, both of which are very concentrated and too much will actually have a negative effect. With those 2 flavor company's I find that 0.5% to 6% in generally usually yields flavor that rivals TFA from 5 to 15%, that is not with all the flavors though and TFA has some flavors that work well with at low %'s.

There are some here that will mock you if you post a recipe with a high percentage, pay them no mind and just enjoy your creation. The most important thing is that it keeps you off the cancer sticks.

Definitely keeping me off the stinkies lol .. i made 3 30mil bottles 60vg 40pg with 25% in each... they are in the ultrasonic cleaner vibrating away now..
i hope that it isn't ruined by putting too much in :( wish me luck ! ( ps.. i made them all stand alone ... single flavours)

Thank you you for you're imput... greatly appreciative :)

Oh, 25% single flavor, never tried that before but if it works out great than let us all know. I am going to guess that the apple is going to be wicked strong but I haven't used TFA Apple for a long time. If there really chemical smelling than you could try taking off the caps and letting them breath for 24 hours or more.

All is not lost, if your using a juice calculator you can figure out how to add more PG and VG to cut down the percentage.

so out of my 3 25% 25mL batches... apple, strawberry ripe and french vanilla.. i feel i put TOO MUCH in... it is not a distinct sweet flavour... the taste is present ... but i think the amount i put in dulled the flavour (if thats possible)... and i am getting very strong 'PG coughs" after gaping the strawberry ripe :( so i did the same 3 batches again... yet this time ... only 15% for each... see how i go. :)

Can i ask... if you do have a potent or dulled taste due to over concentrating... is it feasible to just tip a little out and top it up with VG?? Will it help out in bringing the flavour down? diluting in a way? Thank you in advance :)

This is the first time I tried this but used a calculator that is supposed to reduce the amount of flavoring in a juice.

I put in that you have a 25ml of juice with 25% flavoring and you want to reduce it down to 15% flavoring. If all of that is correct then you want to add 16.67ml of PG/VG so you would have a total of 41.67ml of juice, this will reduce the flavoring. Keep in mind that if you want to keep it at 60 VG/ 40PG then you will want to do the same with the amount you are adding so that would be about 10ml of VG and 6.67ml of PG if I did my math right.

Hmmm
each bottle i made (25mL) same flavours of course...
Flavour 15%.. (3.75mL)
VG 70%.. (16.2mL)
PG 30% .. (0.5mL)
Nicotine.. (5mL) or 4.8mg

I thought you were asking how to dilute the 25% flavor bottles you made down to 15%, that was the question I was answering.

I have to get some rest, good luck.

Starting point for most TFA flavors is 5-7% IMO.
Try the Strawberry Ripe at 5% first, then work upward if needed.
But it might take a week for it to wake up.

I have this problem That when i used TFA vanilla flavours... at even 12%... i could taste the vg over the actual flavour.. it wasn't strong enough... but now with these fruit flavours... it seems less is more?? which is strange to me... but so be it... experienced knowledge is the best knowledge..

i just can't find that 'perfect mix'. i go to vape shop.. try some bottled retail e liquids... and it is fucking delicious! but i just can't get that 'wholesome' flavour :( Mine are usually not smooth... or it is dull ( not enough flavour or too much).. or it is coarse vape.... it is not terrible.. or unvapeable .. but it is not a retail style ... smooth flavoursome mix...

I have a quick question or 2

1. Does 'sweetener' help this wholesome flavour?? Make it smoother ?
2. if i am vaping or making 80vg 20pg juices... should i start making 50/50 mixes? so the pg shines through with flavour more??

it just sucks... i have tasted 90% vg mixes that have lush flavour ...

3. Does the amount of Nicotine added distort or overwhelm the flavour content
4. Does 'over ultrasonic or breathing' cause issues?? i do 2 -1 hour ultrasonic cycles.. 1st cycle i leave lid of for 30min to breathe..

(i might add before i put into ultrasonic cleaner i microwave with lid off for 10 seconds to get rid of alcohol)

Best to just leave the cap and topper off for 24hrs to evaporate any alcohol, and normal steeping helps get rid of this too.

Some think that sweetener helps with bringing out more flavor, and typically most vendor juice is usually heavy on sweetener and flavorings.
Personally I vape 70/30VG just because I want flavor more than clouds, try some 50/50 mixes to see if they work any better.
Certain flavors can be harsh but usually when using too much.
Adding 0.5% FA Marshmallow can help with smoothing out.
Adding 0.5% FA Coconut can add some buttery effect.
Fruits tend to like a bit of Vanilla & Cream added to take the edge off IMO.
I've never had any good premium mixes from vendors, hence the reason I started DIY shortly after starting to Vape.
Some use MTS Vape Wizard to smooth things out, (I just got some but haven't used it yet).
Depending on the brand of NIC, some can cause an off taste, 2-3% not too much tho.
I just let my mixes sit for 24hrs min.,but some may need longer.
DIY can take some time and may take awhile to find your best ADV recipes.
Much more dependent on what brands of flavoring you like best, more than some realize even.
Just a simple mix I really like is 2% INW Shisha Strawberry + 2% INW Biscuit.

Forgot to mention that the main taste I get from VG is sweetness, so you shouldn't be really tasting it, per say, over the flavorings.
Unless you have a bad batch of VG.

BTW what flavors/brands do you have on hand?

Like Heabob mentioned it is a good idea to list what brand and flavors you have, maybe someone has a recipe for those ingredients you can try.

There is no hard and fast rule on what percentage to use, it just takes time and patience to find out what percentage of a certain flavor works for you. IMO it is always better to start off with a lower %, this way if it is too weak you can add a little more. For TFA 5% is a good starting percentage, with flavors from FA and INW 1% as they are more concentrated. If the 5% is too weak don't immediately double it, instead add in 1% at a time until you get the flavor your looking for. I recently did this with FA Nonna Cake and settled around 4.5%.

Tastes vary regarding sweetener, I like a little depending on the mix but have friends that like it really sweet, the kind of sweet that you can still taste in your mouth after a vape for a few seconds.

The TFA Sweetener is sucralose, same thing with the CAP. I am personally not the biggest fan of sucralose, if you use too much it can have an aftertaste which I do not like. Stevia is an alternative but I don't think any flavor maker has a Stevia based sweetener, you would need to buy it from say amazon http://www.amazon.com/Now-Foods-Bet...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 you will want to dilute it though, it is too strong to use as is. About 25% added to a base of VG or PG, I did mine with VG but I think next time I will mix it with PG as the VG is super thick.
My new favorite sweetener is by one on one flavors and it is not sucralose or stevia based, they won't say what is in it but confirmed that those 2 ingredients are absent. Just by smelling it I am thinking it has citric acid in it as well but it really helps to brighten up fruit and sweet mixes, I generally go about 1%, sometimes a little more depending on the mix. http://oneononeflavors.com/products/sweetener-liquid-concentrated

I have tried speed steeping with the ultrasonic and hot water baths but just found that a good shake and time is the best for me. You also have to be careful to not overheat your juice as that will ruin it, I did that once and the smell was horrible so I just threw it away.

Starting off with DIY can be real tough, it takes a lot of patience and most importantly getting to know your flavors. Best thing to do is go ahead and try some popular recipes and don't be discouraged if you don't like them, everyone has different tastes. It took me a couple of months until I started to get the hang of it, now 6 months into it I would say maybe 2 out of 10 recipes I make are disappointments but that is usually when trying new flavors I am not familiar with.

Hang in there and read as much as you can around this place, a lot of great people with great advice, I know they helped me immensely.

I forgot, I wanted to add that leaving the lid off is a good idea if the juice smells like chemicals. If it smells fine then just steep it with the lid on and shake it once a day.

Thank you guys so much for the insight and know how. I do not have many flavours... because in Australia.. i have to cross the city and hour or 2 to go to get my flavours (in the hand) or i buy online... which ends up costing me way to much on Postage,Shipping etc ..

in my my small arsenal i have
TFA apple
TFA strawberry ripe
TFA French vanilla
Delosi Energy drink (red bull)
TFA Vanilla Cupcake (MAX VG and small amount left)

i bought a Vanilla Love package from a vendor... 5 x10ml bottles.. (vanilla custard, bean gelato,ice-cream) etc... but used them all up making bottle after bottle of terrible mixes.. :(

I hope its not the PG amount that is my issue... because i just bought 1 litre of my freedom smokes nicotine from the states.. at 100% pg and 100mg nic (i did this because it eliminates the use of adding more PG ... because it would carry through the pg in the nic and flavouring) and also makes for easier .5ml increments when mixing...

in future i will do this mjag... start at 5% and go up in 1% at a time instead of gambling blindfolded and wasting concentrates...
i may buy some sweetener and give it a whirl... just because, you know? why not? See how it pans out for me...

Heabob... i will try a 50/50 to start off... see if it makes for better flavour... i am not a cloud chaser myself either..
but i don't mind the occasional plume here and there lol :)

I just want to get to a point in my e juice where i can be happy with the flavour... ( i write down ALL of my percentages and mLs into a notebook to save future trial and error) .. so i can stock up... make bottles and be content with the finished product you know? no waste,no trial and error ...
so i can then start blending different flavourings (like on the E liquid mixes website) and create awesome amalgamated flavours.

Once i master and or content with my stand alone flavours... than i can move on...
( i might add my 15% apple isn't fairing out too badly... as it is recommended in the concentrate link mjag posted (Thank You!)
i might actually do a 10% for better measure... but i will start at 5% and work my way up...

Heabob and mjag... you're info is priceless.. thanks a mill guys!

@OhMG What kind of equipment are you vaping on......? That makes a difference in flavor percentages you use in mixing.
I have my 'on the go'
Eleaf stick 40watt TC at 20w with kangertech sub tank single coil (26g kanthal) at 0.62 ohms

and Kooper Plus 200w on soft setting at 0.83 ohms running at 30w on a griffin RTA dual coil (26g Kanthal)

Well, you got the power and good coil/wick surface area, so you don't have to mix at super high flavor %s........The popular consensus amongst many different forum participants with TFA Strawberry Ripe starting % is at 15%.......TFA tends to require some higher %s for their flavorings.......I would try a 40/60 PG/VG mix at 15% for the Strawberry Ripe.......Let it steep (Natural, no heat treatment) for 10 days......and give that a vape..... If you get some nice flavor, work on your others as StandAlone to get a feel for %s......Once you arrive at tasty %s at 40/60, you will get an idea of how the flavor works, and then be able to intuitively adjust your PG/VG ratios and flavor %s to your liking..... I find that steeping is vital to my mixing

Thank you flavour alchemist.. my last batch at 15% were near somewhere i think i want it...

i just made a 50/50 mix at 10% across the 3 flavours bout an hour ago... i microwaved each for 10 seconds (because it loosens up the liquids and makes for a better hand shake) and have put them in the closet ..

i will give these a miss and not use the ultrasonic on them... hopefully 50pg 50vg will brighten up the flavour department where it is lacking..

Maybe (due to rumours of ultrasonically steeping juice speeds up the process by 2 weeks... true or not i don't know?) i think i could be vaping my juice before it has matured... like wine as such.. and steeped properly.

I also have left the lids off the bottles also... i will screw them back on in the morning... around 12 hours would be suffice? don't you think??

Also.. do you ultrasonic your juices flavour alchemist? Thank you for you help also... appreciated. :)

As you can see, many different amounts of flavor recommended by people.
I can taste the Strawberry Ripe just fine at 5-6%.
You can also add 2-3% French Vanilla, or Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, or Vanilla Custard.
But I didn't like the TFA Vanilla Bean Gelato myself.

Bummer it costs so much to get the flavorings down under.

I use an UC for steeping a custard and tobacco mix. However, I need to run it for at least 10 hours, and it still requires 3 days normal steeping, in order to begin having the flavors, and being vapeable. After an additional 3-5 days normal steeping, it has it's full body. I think, I'll try the crockpot steeping method in the near future.

You have to be careful using heat, because there are some flavors (citrus, strawberry, cinnamon) that can fade badly. When I use heat, I use a crockpot for 4 hours, but I rarely bother these days (I don't care much for caps custard or any tobacco).

My mixing routine goes like this:...... I mix my PG/VG and flavors in my bottle.....I froth my mixture........I use a dremel tool with a bent (at the tip)straw connected to the 1/8" drill bit.......Let it return to liquid form, Let it sit (cap off) over nite.......Then add Nicotine.......cap and tip back on.....steep Fruits about a week, depending on Brand......Creams and Fruit/Cream blends at least 2 weeks......Custards 1 month to 6 weeks.......No heat, no ultrasonic cleaner, no crock pot.

Flavour Art tends to have more volatiles in it than TFA....but it is also more concentrated than say, for example TFA or Capella......The frothing and cap off over nite helps dissipate those harsher volatiles......Flavorah flavors, on the other hand, still get the similar treatment, however they can be vaped in shorter steep time, especially the Fruits.....I treat their creams the same as usual.......A particular flavor that is excellent after a 4 day steep is Flavorahs' Wild Melon mixed at 40/60 PG/VG at 8%......Superb bold flavor......smooth as silk, and brightly crisp.......I am venturing into Inawera, which is reported to be as strong as FlavourArt, and exceptional in their fruits.......For Custards....I use Capella, and am experimenting with Flavorahs'....( I don't care for Capella Fruits, as I experience an astringent taste to them......For Creams, I find TFA and FlavourArt to shine.......Still experimenting with Vanillas......

Your 50/50 blend should bring out your flavor, however your vapor production will suffer.......but it might be a good compromise.....I find that a 40/60 blend, with a bit higher Flavor % gives me the best of both worlds, as the vapor does, indeed contribute to the experience, along with flavor.....However, I have to be disciplined to allow my mixes steep for a good period of time.....I have found that heat (for me) tends to dull out the bright notes of my fruit vapes, and take away a bit of the freshness of the experience.

I have been experimenting with StandAlone mixes for nearly 6 months, and been venturing into a few multi-flavor recipes, and am finding that sometimes "throwing caution to the wind" can really render some excellent surprises along the way........ Feel free to check out ELiquidRecipes.com ......There are some excellent resources that you can use by clicking on a flavor in a particular recipe....It will direct you to a page of peoples Single flavor percentages, average percentages used, etc., along with tasting notes ....and a plethora of useful information.....You can also search your particular Flavor Brands to get to that info, as well....

Just sharing my experience and NOT telling you what to do, however, don't be afraid to experiment with some "out of the box" higher flavor percentages, and allow those babies to steep a while......as you can also test vape them along the way and sooner or later you will start enjoying the fruits of your labor....

Definitely more than just 1-2 hours. I used to have mainly TFA flavors a while back, and they all needed quite some time regular steeping. However, to answer your question, with TFA flavors, I'd still go 5-10 hours. My UC also has a build in heater, that I'm utilizing as well. Ideally (according to what I've read on NudeNicotine.com), 3-10 Minutes per UC session. 20 - 30C temperature. Let the liquid rest for a few minutes, after each session.
I'm using mainly FA flavors now, with the exception of two liquids, most of my recipes are shake and vape. The ones that aren't, they just need 12-24 hours.
In order to avoid the speed steeping, I also use two 120 ml bottles. While one is providing my daily needs, the other is steeping normally. (This is for my fully developed juices)
