First off, I have no experience with any type of battery other than your standard toy/remote batteries. I have a new mod on the way which was won on here. I have an istick now so the battery is built in. I have the balrog mod comming and need a 18650 battery. I have scrapped the battery pack from my laptop and taken the 18650s out of that. They are pictured below. Does anyone know what ones they are and if they are OK to use? I think they are Panasonic and generally their pretty well known for electronics. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Oh well
Thought it would be good. Reuse something that would have just been thrown out.

No problem. For mods, the minimum I'd use are batteries rated at 20amps continuous discharge. A few good choices are: Samsung 25R's, LG HG2's and HE4's. Here's a link to the top 5 18650's for Vaping. Enjoy your new mod!

Cheers,
Steve

PS. That is part 3 of the series. You might want to check out the first two parts as well if you get a chance

late to the party..
stick with the Samsung 254r, LGHE$, HG2, Sony VTC4 and VTC5 just as importantly as getting a good battery is getting a good battery from a good vendor.
LIIONWHOLESALE.com and RTDVAPOR.com are my two go to battery vendors.

I didn't think battery selection in a regulated mod would be so important

I looked up your mod and see it's a single 18650 mod that goes up to 70 watts. I'm not sure what power you plan on using. To find the minimum you need, you take the wattage and divide by the lowest voltage of the battery (not fully charged - usually 3.5v is the lowest I run mine down to, but lots run theirs lower) to find the current being drawn from the battery.

I would not use anything less than a 20 amp continuous discharge 18650 battery in that mod. You have to keep in mind, if you try to draw more amps from a battery than what it's rated for, it will heat up. You do not want that happening. Not trying to be an alarmist but having a battery go into thermal runaway is no fun. Be safe.

Cheers,
Steve

I don't think I would be using the full 70W. 30-35 max I would say. And that's only if I get an rta

Although, in TC mode it uses the full 70W though right?

I was just checking out interstate battery's website and they have pretty good prices on their batteries as well and they are pretty well known for their quality. I'm wondering now, how can you find the discharge rate if it's not listed in the specs? Is there a math equation I can use?

Thanks! Vape on

No, the only way to really know the constant current, pulse current, and capacity (mah) is from the manufacturer. The only time I've heard of that brand was for car batteries. I bought my Samsung 25R's for less than $5 apiece. Crappy batteries usually cost more than that. I really recommend you sticking to the big 3 for 18650's: Samsung, LG, or Sony. The main problem with Sony is there are a lot of counterfeits. Beware of re-wrappers. Companies that re-wrap other companies batteries. Not all are bad, but you never know what you are getting.

personally I've never seen anyone discuss the usage of an interstate battery for vaping. I prefer to stick with the known tried and true when it comes down to my vape gear.
As far as equations, I could you bore with some discussions on ohms law and electronic proncipals.
Interstate is my one go to for my boat; but, that's about it

Yea, Danny is from Brigus I believe or Bay Roberts. I don't know him but that's not very far from where I live. We have had a few good players from here in the last few years.

Is it OK to charge it in the mod or should I also get a charger?

Hmmm... is there a good b&m? maybe get one battery there to hold you over while some from online ship?
Yea, that's probably what I'm going to end up doing. I just hate how much they mark things up around here. I can get two batteries and a charger from liion for the price of two batteries here.

I'm a firm believer in external chargers whenever possible. you can use these the onboard one if the mod has it, Obviously. The thing is all USB plugs only have so many times that you can stick your plug in before it falls out.
So, I save mine for times that I need it, otherwise I use a charger; and, considered it another cheap investment.

Edit::: that's just me though.

Yeah as soon as you said where you live, I knew the prices would be higher. As to whether you can charge in the mod, I don't know because I don't have that mod. It's usually ok to charge single battery mods internally. That's the best I can do without having one.

PS I agree with Firebird about an external charger. I use them unless I don't have the option. USB jacks can be fragile plus with a dedicated charger, I expect the charging circuit to be more robust.

I read online that it has pass through charging so that you can vape and charge at the same time. I was just wondering if an external charger would be better for the battery for not over charging and what not. I should have worded that different, sorry.

Well I think we both think an external charger is always preferable. I was answering your original post as whether or not it was possible. I think were on the same page now.

I've been looking at Vapor Joes Canada trying to find you a good deal on a good battery. I just looked quick, but unfortunatly the best deals I saw are from Gearbest and FastTech. Not that there is anything wrong with them other than the fact they are in China and it can take 3 weeks to a month to get your orders. Here's the link to Vapor Joes Canada if you want to take a peek.

PS I have better luck with FastTech if you choose to go that route.

I didn't know that there was a Canadian site for that one. To be honest, I haven't really looked myself yet anywhere except for liion and interstate. I was hoping to find somewhere locally besides a vape shop. Only because they know that they can do a higher mark up and get away with it around here. I'm all for supporting local business but I also don't appreciate money grabs because they think they have a corner on the market

On short notice, Amazon Prime has Samsung 25R for about 14$ a pair. It's a little high but it's 2 day shipping. Buy from UNUCASE they are a number 1 seller and I've gotten only brand new authentic cells from them.

I went into a B&M yesterday and bought a samsung. While driving around I looked at it and noticed it didn't look right. I brought it to another shop and he confirmed what I thought, it was a rewrap. It was green like it should be but instead of having writing printed on it it had a silver sticker saying imr18650 etc. So I bought a Sony vtc4 from this shop and tried to bring the samsung back to the other place. They wouldn't take it because it is authentic. They peeled off the sticker and there was the writing that was supposed to be there. Now I have both kinds...lol
This is what it looked like out of the box.

Something bothers me about the pic above. Does that sticker say "IMR"? Because it should say INR I believe. When I peel the silver sticker back on mine it does indeed say "Samsung INR" with the rest of the info. INR.....not IMR. The silver sticker on mine doesn't say it either way. My sticker just says "18650 2500 mAh 3.7v" until I peel it back to reveal more factory info on the battery wrap. Mine appears to be authentic according to this: https://batterybro.com/blogs/18650-...-fake-18650-battery-featuring-the-samsung-25r

Those stickers aren't applied by the manufacturer. Any idiot employee of the shop or their supplier could have put them on there. The actual cell is what's important.

Also, the person who said they were fake without pulling the sticker either doesn't know what they're talking about or they saw an opportunity to tell you some b.s. and get you to buy something from them. Either way....

Not according to the linked article : "Note that many lithium-ion batteries have a separate sticker on each cell which states the cell’s size, voltage, and capacity. International shipping rules mandated by the United Nations require this information for each cell when shipped via air freight (note: this is not necessary for sea shipping.) Suppliers will print batteries or tape a piece of paper with this information and stick it to the battery. It does not mean the batteries are fake, just that they were shipped via air freight from Asia and the suppliers needed a simple way to comply with the rules."

Bottom line is the sticker needs to be peeled off to see what it says.

I read the article. I'm not going taking off the pvc. From what I can see compared to the article it looks like it's good. The stores should really peel that sticker off b4 selling. I also can't see under the top that well but I'm going to get a flashlight later for a closer look

For whatever reason the stickers are applied after manufacturing. Who applies them is really immaterial. It doesn't hurt anything to peel those off.

You won't cause any damage peeling off the sticker. At least I never have when peeling off mine. There should be writing on green battery wrap. If you can't see any, it's under the sticker.

Cheers,
Steve

Another, probably redundant, question. Because I now have the samsung and the Sony, when my Samsung dies can I just swap between the two batteries? I read something somewhere about having your batteries married...is what I'm asking above violate this 'rule'?

That's a single cell device? if so, then yeah, just switch out batteries

The whole married battery talk is for multiple cell devices, where you want to use the same kind together.
