Hi Folks,

The wait is over, the recurve 2 is finally here…I’ve been eagerly awaiting its arrival since the original was released last year, hoping to see whether Mike and Wotofo would nail it.

Whilst we were patiently waiting there was the release of the Reload S RDA, a slightly awkward moment for Mike with its obvious similarities to the original, however the 2 isn’t about single coil, instead we have the dual coil variant to cover and with it Mike has looked to improve his original iteration.

So without further ado let’s see if he managed to crack it…Wotofo sent me this for the once over, as always I don’t like to make recommendations in my reviews, instead I present you with my findings to help bolster your research should you be interested in the product.

Impressions, Build Quality & Assembly

I will be comparing to the original throughout this review. Reading back my review notes from last time…

I thought the stock resin drip tip on the original was great for an 810…it was comfortable to use and suited the original curved cap really well. When the 22mm aftermarket cap came out (see below)

wFBoCcb.jpg

...it changed things about tightening the drip tip bore up significantly and reducing the size profile…this helped improve flavour in my opinion and meant I didn’t have to use the 510 adaptor. What you get with the Dual Coil is pretty much a carbon copy of the 22mm with a similar type of drip tip bore. Fear not there is the original shape tip in the box as well, so you can try both out and see what you prefer.

UpT4ZVw.jpg

I found the O-Ring holding the drip tip a little too lose last time, which is more noticeable once I started vaping, the exact same issue is present on the dual so careful not to knock the tip out accidently.

Machining is better this time around for the Dual, I can’t see any blemishes anywhere on my deck or top cap. The gold plating has been applied very well. I’m pleased to see Mike dropped the gaudy branding from the original recurve’s top cap and adopted the reserved 22mm variant instead. You still get a bit of unnecessary branding on the sides of the deck though…for some reason if you weren’t sure it was a dual coil...well now you know.

YA6RN0a.jpg

One of the major pointers from my last review was the tight fitting cap, due to the two bottom O-rings being overly large (one directly above the other). One of the suggestions I made to Wotofo was to split these two O-rings to help ease this problem, I felt it would also address leaking under the base….I’m pleased to say leaking is something of the past, in addition the top cap is a lot easier to turn and get on and off as well….both problems fixed.

0EAUXUy.jpg

The only thing I would say is when putting the cap onto the deck...keep it straight or it does snag slightly. This snagging is more about post location being right on the edges of the deck hitting the stop inside the top cap. It’s not really a big deal once you get the knack of it, however if you are someone who likes removing the cap to drip, you’ll notice this a lot.

I mentioned the stops above inside the top cap…as I said earlier the cap is identical to the aftermarket option both inside and out (albeit a larger version of the 22mm). There is an extra step out lip inside the chamber (where the stops are located) which allow it to rest on top of the deck to ensure the holes line up flush with the posts, as a result there is very little wayward airflow entering from the sides.

AtflpYF.jpg

I noticed it’s impossible to position the airflow down to two holes only, if you try you’ll offset the outer holes past the post which is a bit of an oversight, having said that I like a fairly restricted draw and 4 is absolutely ample to suit that need. Much like its predecessor the draw isn’t overly airy to start with, I expect most people will perfectly happy running it wide open.

The Dual Recurve is more forgiving than its predecessor when it comes to squonking (which was no slouch in its own right)….firstly the posts have now been given a higher platform, they have also spaced the posts further apart, which allows juice to hit the wick faster instead of rising up in the middle as quickly. These two important changes not only make it better for dual coil usage, but dripping as well.

c2RJ8gZ.jpg

Note: I cut my wicks pretty short for the Dual such that I have them floating above the base of the deck slightly, this helps with the higher coil position and keeping everything nicely saturated. It also helps because the squonk pin isn’t flush this time so not all juice will be sucked back into the bottle.

I noted in my previous review that I didn’t like the flat head squonk pin, preferring instead the Allen key types….the good news is that change has been incorporated also.

obBzbQI.jpg

The Dual Recurves posts are probably the most obvious modification, keeping in line with the namesake of the RDA. They serve to hug the coils and provide a positioning guide. A closer look though and there is more to it;

Both posts now form part of the deck itself (so both are negative), this is why there is the raised platform ...to create space to house the isolated positive block. Going this route allowed them to push the posts out much further effectively stopping juice getting trapped behind them as easily, which was another thing I noted last time in combination with the leaky base.

xXa4FLt.jpg

You’ll also notice there is no notched cut out around the rim of the deck compared to the original…another small tweak helping to keep juice inside the deck and top cap sealed up tight.

0EAUXUy.jpg

All in all I feel the changes are really positive, it’s not trying to re-invent the wheel, rather perfect the original design to make it the best it can be.

I guess the only thing I would like to have seen (and was expecting to see) were cut outs, essentially stepping in the airflow inlets on the posts (similar to the Reload S approach). I say this because when you adjust the airflow down, it makes sure air is still hitting more of the coils surface…However without trialling it, I can’t say for certain how much difference it would make to the draw, which is pretty spot on for my taste as it is.

Coil Building and Performance

Build space is almost identical to the original recurve (albeit fitting two coils in now), you can safely fit in two 3.5mm coils with ease (although I prefer 3mm personally). Whilst the original was capable of mounting a 3.5mm coil, I just felt the wicking wells restricted it too much. This isn’t the case with the Dual, because Mike pushed the posts out further and cut the wells deeper around the deck there is now plenty of room for an easy wicking experience.

EpcdOhA.jpg

Coil positioning is identical between the two atomisers vertically and in height, making best use of that side airflow. When mounting snip the leads to 7mm, plonk the coil in, tighten up and done. The Recurve Dual even likes similar types of coil to keep the top cap from getting too hot (fused clapton up to aliens). If you try to run builds above 70Watts, then you’ll notice the top cap gets very hot quickly under chain vaping conditions, I’d say avoid builds that have a long cool down as a result.

The screws are the same type found on the original recurve, it’s worth noting there were reports of issues with them stripping early on the original. I have never had issues with this myself, but then I use my own 2.5mm screwdriver rather than the little one you get in the box, which tends to slip….so watch out for that.

Vaping wise; I was vaping this side by side with the 22mm cap variant using the same flavours and cotton. I found it to be uncannily similar…ok it produces denser vapour, but that’s to be expected, the actual draw and flavour are very hard to pick apart….

So where’s this leave us on the vaping front then? Well the Recurve Dual Coil isn’t a straight up flavour chaser, it’s more rounded than that. and executes all the things I hold in high regard (smooth draw, slightly restricted hit, great flavour and cloud, moist vape, forgiving squonking)…so I guess if you like the original, or are someone who likes a foot planted in all corners of the vape spectrum…it’s more of the same, without its predecessors niggles, leaving it with a heavily weighted Pro’s Vs. Cons in my book.

1zaWJfT.jpg

Pro’s
  • Great Flavour and cloud production
  • Love the airflow system and slightly restricted draw
  • Drip tip tall enough not to get burny lips (chain vaping does make top cap get hot)
  • Decent machining throughout
  • Post screws were fine on mine
  • Works great as a Squonker (deep juice well)
  • Works well as a dripper (5-6 hits)
  • Easy to build on
  • Easy to wick
  • Incorporated the same styling as the reserved 22mm recurve top cap
  • Doesn’t leak under the base
  • Doesn’t suffer with spitting or condensation build up
  • Machining and QC was better than the original single coil I got
  • Top Cap O-rings offer near spot on resistance
  • Stops inside the top cap keep airflow aligned correctly
  • Squonk pin has a bigger bore and is hex key
  • Nifty little snipping tool
Con’s
  • Drip tip O-Ring inside the top cap isn’t tight enough
  • Top cap does get hot chain vaping at 70Watts, retains heat for a while as well
  • Top cap snags a little when putting it back on (keep it straight and its fine)
  • No spare 510 adaptor
  • Setting airflow to 2 holes overshoots the posts

Recurve RDA Final Conclusion

Whilst the Recurve Dual Coil seems to be a doppelganger of the 22mm variant, Wotofo and Mike have taken on board much of the feedback from their first outing and incorporated the necessary tweaks into the design to improve it.

The recurve (single coil) was one of my favourite RDA’s I reviewed last year and to this day I still hold it in very high regard. What the Dual Coil delivers is that same flavour and draw experience, without the majority of cons of its predecessor.

I was asking for a version update in my last review and this is exactly what I was hoping for…job done I’d say and yet another solid performing atomiser to add to the collection for Wotofo and Mike.

As always an awesome review. Thanks buddy!

The dual recurve looks fantastic. Would love to have one but I if I get another dual coil atty, I'll have to quit my job and work full time building my attys. :giggle:

Fellow vapers. Get in here and show this reviewer some love. Don't let this hard work go for naught.

Thank you matey

....I think with your reload S, Elder Dragon and Axial mate you’re in a good place on this front ...not trying to unseat you but depends what you’re after really, if it’s “I like the look”, or came from a place of not owning those or the original then sure thing .... if you are after gains compared to those (after you described them) then I don’t think you’ll find it here in contrast.... just my opinion of course :)

You’re definitely right on. I have some great gear that excels in every category... alas, it’s the acquisition that’s fun at this point. Lol

Oh, you forgot the citadel :giggle:

another great one

Haha...”gotta catch them all” so many good products to choose from now and at all ranges of the affordability spectrum compared to even a few years ago, it’s a blessing and a hinderance ...like going to a restaurant and having too much to choose from on the menu

Fuck it...oh that’ll do :giggle:

actually on this point

...I think this is in part why there is a decline on the social media front ...with so much out there, no longer do we see the rally calls and excitement building when a new product is coming out...it’s more background and yeah that’s nice .....next

no niche products or important gains coming out, repackaging and tweaks is the new black

got a single coil idea - launch it

Was it a success?

Nope next, yes launch a dual coil

Was it a success?

Nope next, yes launch an RTA

Was it a success?

Nope next, yes launch a mod to match

And so it continues ....yawn I’m tired of it if I’m honest, vaping needs a lobotomy of sorts, it’s in this cycle of monotony right now, I don’t think it helps having the same 5 or so people releasing everything with all these companies, this isn’t an unfair oh woe is me, it’s a lack of diversity out there and is sucking the soul out of the industry

Diversity costs more money. Personally I think it's simple greed, they've figured out vapers spending habits are knee-jerk reactions nowadays. Until the average vaper becomes more selective it will continue to be same design/different package. Just my opinion of course.

While I’m on one here let me continue ...this isn’t to say mike a co. don’t come out with good products they do ...my review said as such about this one ....

TVP’s topside great idea innovative leave it there it helps move the market on

Tony B ...innovative bought squonking to the masses leave it there

MrJustright1 ...mesh done well - this area has room for manoeuvring still the unity was a acceptable as a new concept

etc etc ....I’m not bashing these guys not even close but I think the industry mfgs need a wake up call ...be different from each other, focus on 2-3 great products a year let people get excited about it again, have a mixed varied portfolio rather than follow the herd year in year out it’s predictable and boring

Exactly that ...it’s easy re-tooling is easier, less cost to serve more revenue in an already bottomed our competitive market

Name the number of excited threads this year on this forum alone though, not many outside of a handful...ok could be a numbers problem here or people finding their niche, but I go back to it’s all so similar

Fatality ...fatality mini
Profile ..,.unity
Recurve....dual recurve
Topside...dual topside....carbon topside
Dead rabbit...and shit loads of them afterwards
Drop...drop single ...drop dead rabbit cause why not

Just a few examples of the stifled pattern im talking about

Edit: I’m not knocking Wotofo here wanna make that clear, this is industry wide repeat pattern, they and others have released some great products and continue to (my review was about this product is on its own and stand by it)...this commentary is more of a challenge request about the wider industry release train to do more in this area, lead by innovation and leave it there.

All valid points bro...
it’s a weird cycle: something catches on, lets do it until it dies, than resurrect it and and do it again.
