Some General Questions I Have

Hey, everyone! As a new Vaper, I have some general questions I'd like to get some help answering. :)

My Current Setup:
 1. Eleaf iStick 20W
 2. Aspire Nautilus Mini, using the second airflow setting (going from smallest to largest)
 3. Cosmic Fog "Milk & Honey"
I've honestly been relatively dissatisfied with the flavor of this juice.
On the inhale there's a weak sweet / creamy flavor; on the exhale there's a mild banana flavor.

Today I started at 5.0 watts and began going up by .5 watts after a few hits.
So far, I haven't noticed much of a change, honestly. It's discouraging.

My Questions:
 1. How does voltage affect juice flavor and consumption?
 2. How does wattage affect juice flavor and consumption?
 3. How does airflow affect juice flavor and consumption?
 4. Am I doing something wrong, or is this juice just weak?
Please help me! Thank you. :D

I've never tried the Milk and Honey but my daughter got a bottle and said she loved it.
All variables can have an effect on the flavor of your juice,be it the wattage, voltage, wicking, etc.
I have some juices that taste great in a clearomizer, and taste terrible in a dripper, and also vise versa.
I have the full size Nautilus and I never run it at less than 9 watts, some juices I'll go up to 12 watts, that's about max for me on that tank.

Yeah, the reviews on it are all pretty positive, saying that it tastes great. The exhale is nice, but the inhale is weak.
Seeing as I'm new to all of this, I'm worried that my setup sucks, or that I'm Vaping wrong or something because of the weak flavor.

I likes the milk and honey but it was not a very strong flavor. Maybe try another flavor. I mixed it with fruity flavors.

I doubt you are doing something wrong. Maybe your expectations are too high. It takes awhile to find a flavor that you absolutely love. Keep trying, don't get discouraged.

Yeah, it's on the weak side of the spectrum. I should have expected that though...
How strong of a flavor can "Milk & Honey" really make? Lol!

It's entirely possible that my expectations are too high. Not just for this juice, but for Vaping in general.
It's unlikely that a flavor that mimics a grape Jolly Rancher will be as strong as if I actually put a grape Jolly Rancher in my mouth. That's sort of what I was expecting out of Vaping based on people's YouTube videos.

Now I'm afraid I'll be disappointed with Vaping altogether. :(

Hopefully not. Stick with it. I have heard a lot of success stories for people curbing their sweet tooth. Just order more juice. That is the deal the cape mimics the real thing it isn't the real thing. lol.

I know it's never going to be like the real thing, but a part of me thought that it would be close.
Before ordering my Vape I watched a ton of videos on YouTube (mostly on the Indoor Smokers channel).
From those videos I got the impression that a good setup would produce vapor that's bursting with flavor.

So, my expectations probably were set too high. I'll still stick with it though.
Once I try and even make a variety of juices, if it's not helping me do what I aim to, I'll make a decision.

For now, I just want to understand how watts, volts, etc. affect juice flavor and how fast you use it. :)
Perhaps then I can get the most out of this juice, and any others I buy.

Im pretty much still learning myself but maybe this will be of some help.

Its my understanding that ohms and voltage create a wattage...x amount of volts with an x amount of ohms equals an x wattage...i think 3.7v on a 1.8 ohm coil produces 8 watts..the higher the voltage on that 1.8 ohm coil the greater the wattage will be...the greater the wattage of course means more heat which in turn will burn liquid faster..As far as flavor goes not all juices have the same content of flavoring so it may take more heat or less heat to find the best possible flavor...thats about all i personally believe i understand so far about that...hope some of it helps.

A fully charged ego style battery such as i use charges to 4.2v so my 1.8ohm coil can be giving me 9 10 watts fully charged and degrade from there...i find best flavor with juice i use about midway of the batteries use although not sure what wattage or voltage is at that point.

I also have an eleaf istick and nautilus mini! Seriously my favorite set up. I do believe different flavors need capes on different watts. Different e liquids I vape on I usually do any where from 6-10 depending on what I have in my tank. I also use different airflow settings for different e liquids. And it sounds like you need to extend out on your e liquids. Give something new a try go to your local vape shop and do some testing

Yeah, I'm brand new to Vaping; this is my first mod, tank and juice.
A buddy of mine Vapes and he goes to Natural Vapors here in Buffalo, NY; he won't use any other juices.
I have yet to try and of theirs, though I will be soon enough. The same goes for other brands in general.

There's no doubt in my mind that there are better choices out there than this Cosmic Fog I've got.
It's slowly growing on me, but once it's gone I don't think I'll buy it again, especially as an ADV.

I should also ad that juices with a higher content of vg generally require more flavoring content to get a good taste..PG carrys flavor easily and usually doesnt require as much but you lose vapor with a higher pg content and a more harsh throat hit especially in an rda so i hear...so its a trade off..never settle on one brand of juice, venture out and see what you like best...Same with nicotine content..its not as harsh in a tank compared to sub ohm rda..usually you would want lower nicotine content for a dripper...Nicotine is both in vg and pg as an additive but the majority are pg based which makes it a more harsh hit on hot vapes with a high content...Its a merry go round to find what you like that works with what hardware you use.

And your taste in e liquids will change as well. Like stuff when I started vaping I can't touch right now. I think I just vaped it so much. I've never tried cosmic fog not yet but there are some great vapes out there. And they do taste different in different tanks and rdas.

Yeah, that's a good point. I'm not sure of the ratio in this particular juice, but I'm fairly certain it's low in PG.

This brings up another question I have, actually; what exactly is throat hit? Like, what does it feel like?

I'll definitely do plenty of experimenting. At some point I want to start making my own liquids as well.

A throat hit is the feeling and satisfaction that one gets in the back of their throat and lungs when they inhale nicotine.

Okay. As someone who uses 0mg juice, will I not experience throat hit, even in a juice with a lot of PG?

Yeah, it's an interesting thought. I've read that it's the PG in juice that creates throat hit, but if it's the Nicotine that causes it in a cigarette then it stands to reason that it would also be the Nicotine that does it in juices. I'm no expert though, lol. :p

Without nicotine you won't get any throat hit without some sort of additive. Flavors are carried fine in VG, but they do need longer to develop than the do in PG.

I'm confused now, honesty; I've read articles that says it's the PG and some that say it's the Nicotine...

Having never used a juice other than this one, I don't know what throat hit feels like; this one doesn't cause it.

If it is in fact the Nicotine and not the PG, in theory I could mix my own juices with a really strong flavor, right?
I'd simply have to use a lot more PG than VG and it'd carry the flavor better if I understand correctly.
The only downside (which isn't too big of one at that) would be the reduced vapor production from lack of VG.

Of course, I could be way off base here too, lol.

The throat his is mainly from the nicotine, and it's definitely more if the nicotine is also in PG. However, PG does give a harsh feeling in the throat, unlike VG, but it's not the same as the throat hit you get from nicotine - if that makes sense. But now that I come to think of it, if you've never been a smoker it won't matter - you will likely get what you need from a slightly higher PG mix. Yes, you can easily make your own juice - and it's much cheaper than buying it, and then you an use whatever flavor level you need. But there are plenty of highly flavored mixes on the market, so you shouldn't have to DIY just to find enough flavor. Halo, for instance, has a lot of flavoring and high PG, and there are many others.

Thank you, AmandaD! I appreciate you clearing that confusion up for me. :D

I did some research last night on making my own juices; watched a video or two and did some light reading.
Afterwards, I checked out two sites; Mt. Baker Vapor and My Freedom Smokes which sell supplies.
Mt. Baker Vapor sells an unflavored juice in a variety of PG / VG ratios for relatively cheap, actually.
I'm thinking of buying a couple of them as well as a single flavoring just to see if I like high PG or not.

I'll also look into Halo juices, since you said they have a high flavor concentration.
Which other brands are similar (you said there were many others)? :)

It's been so long since I bought juice I can only think of Halo as being high pg and high flavored! Tasty Vapor, Goodlife, and Halcyon all come to mind as being heavy in flavor. I never used Mount Baker, but I know you can get extra flavor shots and I believe you can adjust the pg/vg ratio - someone else will chime in on this.

Keep turning the power up until it's obvious you've gone too far. With my current setup I don't get decent flavor until about 15 watts. I also get most of the throat hit from the menthol in my juice. I taste the flavor in my mouth and feel the menthol in my throat and lungs. The experience you're looking for is out there. With all the variables involved in vaping it can take some time to find it. Good luck.

Wattage and voltage affect the flavour by bring forth nuances that are directly affected by heat
Airflow adds more air to the vapour off of the coils....which will dilute the flavour due to increased atomisation.

Basically you get a more intense flavour with decreased airflow....but lower visible vapour volume. Exploring different power setting allows you to explore different flavour profiles of the juice....for example, more power with a juice that has cinnamon, will punch up the cinnamon. Fruit flavours will take a back seat to pastry flavours.

Ooh, decreasing the airflow helped! I went down to the smallest airflow setting on my Mini Nautilus and got more flavor. Thanks for that! :D

More power creating more punch with a cinnamon flavor makes a lot of sense. I plan to try cinnamon at some point too. :)

If you get flavors like Red Hots or Atomic Fireball and the like, you will get TH from the cinnamon.

Thanks for the heads up, RJ.

I think if it was a throat hit from the flavor I'd be able to handle it.
Can anyone explain what the sensation feels like? I know what it IS, but not what it FEELS like, lol.
It could be one of those things I just have to experience for myself though.

You ever smoked to many ciggerette in a day? That's a harsh throat hit...I for one hate a throat hit...some juices have a harsher hit some not as bad...the higher your nic the harder your throat hit...there are other factors but that's the main thing

So, I'm thinking of ordering a couple bottles of juice from Mt. Baker Vapor.
I want to see what I think of a juice that has more PG in it than VG as well, as it carries flavor better.
Do you think getting a bottle of Butterscotch with 2 flavor shots in 2 different ratios would work?
So, 1 bottle at, say 50/50 and then another at, say 80 PG/20 VG? Both with 2 shots.

I just wanted to see if anyone had a better suggestion. I'm basically trying to see what I think of PG.
There's no confirmed information on the juice I have now, so I don't know how much PG is in it.
I'm just nervous that I won't like whatever throat hit feels like...

You're not going to get any real throat hit with PG. But, if you do lung hits (as opposed to mouth to lung) higher PG is tough on your throat (not the same as throat hit with nicotine). If you just do regular mouth to lung hits it'll be fine. MVB juice is pretty cheap, no? So you don't have a lot to lose. Just make sure it's a flavor with good reviews.

I don't usually do lung hits. Sometimes I will, but usually I'm a mouth-to-lung hitter.
Yeah, their juices aren't too pricey. Butterscotch has 4.5 / 5 stars with 666 reviews, so it seems good.

Another option I thought of is their unflavored juice... Grab some in different ratios and try them.
Then I could see exactly what throat hit feels like. Although it seems like somewhat of a waste of money.

I'm over-thinking this, aren't I?

Btw, I just re-read that you're vaping at 5 watts. If nobody has told you turn that wattage up - some flavors really pop at high wattage, and the nautilus can handle it usually. So turn it up in small increments until you get more flavor, and back off a tad when you get a burning taste. I don't vape anything at 5 watts:p

I'm actually at 8.5, which is actually 9.5 on the IStick as it's in Mean Mode and not RMS.

Here's what I'm potentially getting from Mt. Baker Vapor, after a lot of thinking.
 1. 15ml of Butterscotch @ 50/50 w/ 2 shots
 2. 15ml of Blueberry @ 65 PG/35 VG w/ 2 shots
 3. 15ml of Green Apple @ 80 PG/20 VG w/ 2 shots
 4. 15ml of Hawk Sauce @ 50/50 w/ 0 shots (never Vaped anything with Menthol before)
Total: $19.97 shipped USPS First Class; not bad!
Think this is a good idea, or no?

Do you think that will work better or worse than getting all one flavor?
I can't figure out what PG/VG ratio I like unless I try them out, but I don't know if flavor matters for that.

You're overthinking it! Just enjoy your order. The ratio isn't a huge deal early on in the game.

I don't doubt that I am, lol. I'm just trying to get the best testing scenario set up. :p

I ended up going with a 60ml Sample Pack (6 flavors, 10ml each) from Vape Wild for $20 shipped.
They're all 50vg/50pg because I was giving myself a headache trying to pick a ratio, and a 50% Flavor Boost is being applied to all 6 flavors. :D

I think AmandaD is right in that you may be overthinking it. Its probably going to take you a little while to find your daily vape. It seems like my favorite juice changes almost weekly, not complaining though. As I am getting quite a collection and it is nice to go back to one of my olds fav's when the mood suits me. Congrats on becoming a new vaper!
