I'm in Zone 5a and won't start planting my seedlings until next week. Living in SE WI with possible frosts until today. However, it will be in the 40s overnight in a few days. I tried jump starting the season once and planted early. The plants become shocked and don't thrive.

Mowed the lawn. I'm beat. I save my grass clippings to add to the compost pile.

The only problem I am having is my Cucumbers aren't coming up. Started them from seed but surprised I am not snaking them up the trellis yet.

If its colder it will take longer to germinate or they just rot. IDK what zone you are in. They love 70-90 degree temps. I bought some fresh seed yesterday. Muncher (burpless) cucumbers are delicious. I have a new bed waiting for them.

I looked at the package and it says 10-14 days to germinate so with it being rainy and a bit chilly it will take a bit longer. I planted the parsley early and that took a bit longer to come up itself. The Herb Garden has Parsley, Italian Oregano & Basil.

Mowed some rough areas today with the rider.
About 3 hours worth of mowing.
Only mow them about 4-5 times a year. Was kinda like bush hogging.
Was lucky though no yellow jacket nests yet.

Those dang yellow jacket. Grrr. I hate them but they hate us just as much. Lol

The last few years I had Burrowing Bees digging holes in my lawn. Come out in the morning and see big piles of dirt on the cement. Amazing how deep those suckers can dig. Have to wait for the sun to go down and then pour ammonia in the holes.

Yep run over one of those nest and hundreds are stinging you before you know anything is wrong.

the next day after some recovery, sneak back and spot the hole then pour a bucket of sevin in water down and all around the hole and run.

I have used a propane torch. Open the valve poke the nozzle down the hole come back later remove torch and throw burning rag over hole.
Amazing... fire might shoot out of ground for a fairly large circle.
Revenge can be sweet though

We have some like that but they lay eggs every year and hatch in the same holes. First year like wow. But 5 years now hatch late March. When the sun is shining on the holes they fly low all over the yard. Like the grass is crawling. Lol

And they are big but supposedly don't sting. Only reason I killed them was because I was worried they would do damage to the walks by removing so much sand and dirt.

None of us have ever been stung by them. Kinda crazy

Supposedly they can be beneficial to the ground because they aerate it and pollinate flowers. If they stay away from the cement I don't bother them.
Yea I wouldn't want them around my concrete either

Well almost 3 weeks and no cucumbers came up so I went to the store and bought 2 packages of seeds with some potting soil. Started them in the small flats I got with the Tomato Plants from the nursery. If I don't have Cucumber plants in 2 weeks I am going to have to go buy them. I don't understand because the last 2 years I had so many I was giving them away so not to waste them.

No grass cutting for me today :)
Put a new window AC unit in.
Was expecting one from Fed EX. Truck shows up and guy carries very small box over to me.
I said this is kinda small for an Air Conditioner. Then looked at the label and it was not even for me.
he went back to truck and got my AC...

Went out this morning for a vape on the back porch with coffee and noticed the 25 feet of bushes on the side of the house grew so much from the rain it was time for a trim. Allergies went nuts during the cutting and I was sneezing like crazy with itchy watery eyes. Downright OMFG Nasty~! Now watering because the couple of warm days we had dried the place out~!. Was close to 90 yesterday.

With the start of summer effectively here for most of us I thought I would expand the thread to lawn life,
My first contribution is...

CromBurgers

2 lbs lean ground beef.
1 egg beaten up.
1/2 cup crumpled saltine crackers.
and maybe smoke flavoring.
Mix well by hand, squishy squeezy method :)
Make patties and grill.
Everyone seems to love them.
And they hold together better on the grill than reg ground beef burgers.

And if you like em spicy mix in a bit of your favorite diced peppers?

The pruning is killing me with my allergies this year as well. The mulch I did was definitely a nice break on the nose

I pruned a gigantic snowball bush about 2 months ago.
Took a chainsaw and cut off at ground level.
It is already back to a 3 ft or so round ball.

These were 4 ft two months ago. Lol. The grass won't grow there though. Evergreens over head.

Tonight I noticed the Cucumbers I planted on Sunday are spouting already~! I guess my seeds were no good or I tried planting them too early. It also could be since I planted them in flats I was able to get them a full days sun. Another week and I will plant them in the garden where I put up a trellis just for them.

The way these Cucumbers are taking off I might not even have to wait a week to plant then in the garden~!

Tomorrow I will give the lawn a cut like Citi Field for Memorial Day and set up the back yard for the season.

Anyone up for some weedeating or snakes? Startled me.

I'd not mind weed eating that. Looks like a Pine snake, or plain old Black snake, need to see its belly though to be sure. My Papaw John used to get Pine snakes, tease at one until it hooped itself up. He would roll it away while it was hooped. One got angry with him once though. It stood up on it's belly and stood at its head a little over four foot high and took into running after him to strike. Fortunately they lack venom, a bite though can still hurt. Papaw John also used to get snakes just behind their lower jaws, snap them like a whip, kill them.

Got invited once here in WV to a good old fashion church. Folks might say it would be due to power divine, to some deity or other. Others might say it was foolishness on my part, or courage. The preacher of the church put it to a deity. I sighed but just obliged "tradition". Yes, they passed snakes in that church, eastern diamond back rattlers even.

One key thing to remember, don't look into their eyes. That's how the snake "smells" fear. If you do look in their eyes, don't break eye contact first, let them do that. Do not then proceed to harm them after that though. You'll get bitten for sure and it might not be the snake doing the biting but a handler, of course the snake likely will bite you too, you'd deserve it. Instead, you let the snake go its way in peace. This too shows it courage and understanding.

While I visited FL, news ran on TV of a snake handler that did not listen to his Seminole guide. He would taunt the snakes. The guide told him one of the rattlers had whispered a plot to kill the stupid "white eyes" handler for being a coward. Sure enough that news ran, the guy got killed by a rattler.

One bit him and six others took up guard and let that one keep biting him and injecting him full of venom. Nobody could get the snakes away in time for saving him, not even the Seminole guide. He refused to use any way that could harm the snakes to help get them away. It was sad to hear but at the same time kind of expected.

That's kind of how I got clued in on dealing with rattlers. My wizard friend Knife-Hawk taught me enough to remain safe around them. I wouldn't exactly want to go wallow in a nest. *chuckles* But I'm not exactly scared of them either, respectful, yeah sure. :)

Yep run over one of those nest and hundreds are stinging you before you know anything is wrong.

My mom once mowed under a grape vine that was up on an overhead trellis. Of course, the ground under it had several yellow jacket's nests. I being a dutiful son was walking just a few steps behind her to take over mowing.

Panic came swift, my legs also swift went. So here is a 10 yr old boy swarmed, wave after wave of yellow jackets attacking my bare legs, ankles. My legs swelled up like two foot wide tree trunks, feet were like watermelons and toes like big plump sausage links.

The very next evening and night I walked all over our county fair grounds. The step dad refused to wait a night to let me try bringing out the swelling. He had a two week vacation and the fair ran a week, not like he would have suffered from the wait. Years later I recalled this as he said something to me about Marylin Manson and his song tourniquet.

"You know if he got a hair cut, lost the make up he's got a great song there," he told me. I was dumbfounded that he heard much less comprehended the lyrics. So I asked if he did and he acknowledged as much.

I pressed a bit more. Told him I had never said what the song expressed to him. He then took over my dumbfounded look. He couldn't say anything back and I think by that time he knew there was not going be any more of him beating me. I reminded him of how he had me walking at the fair that year of having been stung, told him understood Beowulf well. He nodded and just walked away with no further words, no seeming swagger or stance to attack.

Later on, he asked when I had read Beowulf. I told him that. He asked how I knew he had read it. I just laughed and refused to tell him.
