I second what Leticia said.

If you are a smoker, you should feel much better.
If you are a "hobbyist", there are no long term studies.

haven't been vaping long, but i have my sense of smell back.
never got my winter cold either.
that might be related to vaping instead of smoking.

Smoked for 40 years.
Switched to vaping 4 years ago.
health is much better.
BP went from 145/110 to 120/80 with no meds. Just had a physical a couple of days ago.
Cholesterol went down over 20 points and now requires no meds.
Used to have a couple or three colds per year. I have had 2 in the past 4 years and both were fairly minor.
Much better wind and feel lots better.
btw I am 64 yrs old. And eat mostly junk food and such and my only exercise is working outside and such.
Retired almost 2 years now.

Is vaping totally harmless?
I do not think so but MUCH less harmful than smoking.

Questions:

1) Why did you buy from Canada if you are in the US?
2) "Vapes" is a little too vague.
There is a huge difference in types of devices.

What do you have?
What kind of eliquid?
Flavor, nic level, etc...

Are you a spammer? first post and drop a link and then not come back???
Nope!

There is still not much research on the effect of vaping on health but I still believe it is much better than traditional smoking. The quality of the juice is also important though. If you just get a cheap ass juice from an unknown brand then who knows what toxic substance they put into it

I know what is in my juice. Have been 100% DIY for over 3 1/2 years.
I put lots of diketones, AP and such in it.
When I switched to vaping I was taking medicine for BP, Cholesterol and such.
Off of both for over a year and my BP is now 120/80 and cholesterol is below warning levels.
And I eat mostly junk food and such so not diet related.
DR had trouble believing I had ever smoked at my Physical a week or so ago.
Smoked for 40 years. 1.5 PAD.

As I said before not vaping is better than vaping for you but vaping is light years safer than smoking.

Leticia and hellcat. When you say hobbyist does that refer in your opinion to all sub ohm vaping/ dtl vaping or do you specifically mean rebuildables?
Not sure if you mean me but many of us that started vaping to quit smoking have fell down the hobby rabbit hole. Vaping also becoming a hobby of sorts isn't limited to any particular style of vaping. MTL vaper's that use drop in coils also become vaping hobbyists.

It is definitely a hobby 4me as well as a nicotine addiction. Seeing as i build n mix even when i have plenty of coils n juice on hand. Yes it is a hobby.

To me, it is no more a hobby than making my own stink sticks when I smoked. I got good at it, but it was never a hobby. Vaping is a tool I use to cope with the bullshit in life.

Does vaping affect health, yes! Below is part of a post I did last year and I'm sticking to my personal opinion about what I said regarding vaping.

My vaping facts!

Quit cigs after decades of smoking. The last 20 years were non filtered and RYO's. It took me two whole days to completely quit once I started vaping. I only saved about 3K bucks in the first year, this year I've spent 369 bucks on vape products. Cigs are 6.50 a pack in Ohio that combined with my extra health insurance premium of 1,800 / year would have cost me 4,200 bucks a year as a smoker. I could buy a new car on what I'm saving!

Why I'm posting in the heath area.

As a smoker I constantly had bogies, blew my nose throughout the day...that stopped completely in the first month. As a smoker I would occasionally get extremely sharp localized pains in my lungs, a bit like being poked with the end of a pencil...that stopped completely in a few months and has not returned. As a smoker I occasionally had asthma attacks, they have stopped. SOB (shortness of breath) it got really severe the last few years of cigs, improved by maybe 25% (2019 update on SOB, it has now reduced even more than last year) the first year of vaping, and this year another 25%. Nearly forgot, I usually burned my cig fingers at least 2 or 3 times a week...sometimes very badly when the cig stuck to my lips as I tried to pull it away from my mouth. Haven't burned myself 1 single time in 2 years!

What did my Doctor say at my last check up in June? Mouth, throat, etc... looked great, BP 112/70, O2 absorption rate 98%, blood work...all good except PSA numbers. (update on Dr visit: stats are still good and my PSA has dropped by 4 points probably from using Pygeum)

Gee what else? I no longer smell like an ashtray, the air in my house/garage/car has no cig odor, my clothing no longer smells of burnt tobacco. (update on the cig stink: repainted my interior walls and ceiling...cig odor now completely GONE!)

All of the above are MY FACTS on (update:now over 3 years) 2 years of vaping!

Does vaping affect health? It did mine!!!!

I hate reading all the conflicting information,

makes it so tough to make a decision

don't read it. read the truth.

if its on the news, its fake. people have been vaping for years
. but only in the last 2 months has it become an issue, hmmm. see, there are people that profit from lies and misinformation.
and they don't care who they hurt doing it.

Exactly, if vaping nicotine was so dangerous this forum would be full of dead people. Instead our numbers are increasing and our health improving. You don’t have to dig too deep to realize all this negative propaganda put out by “Truth” and others of their ilk, is complete and total bullshit. These sham organizations and the news that reports their “findings” are a complete laughingstock, and lack any credibility whatsoever.

I’m catching up with old posts, but I wanted to say thanks. Pointing out that VU would be full of people getting sick from nic vaping was a great point, and made me smile.
It’s not that I’m affected by the propaganda everywhere against vaping. It’s that sometimes the amount of lying going on and the utter ignorance of people out there who don’t vape is depressing.

You cut through the bullshit really well.

That was having more vg vaped per day than using mtl. Not really harmful if you recognize the sign and are able to switch up. Some people just have reactions to different stuff. No different than coffee being harmful.

I have smoked only 3 cigarettes in my life. Since I'm lazy and didn't wanted to wait to get comfortable with smoking I was wandering how is vaping. A more satisfying activity as it should be, wasn't a surprise at all but after 3 months of vaping id didn't affected me in any way.I still run up to 10 km without noticeing hard breathing problems, I know that 3 months isn't much but my body is very sensitive to changes like this and I still didn't noticed problems.

smoked for 34 years (smoked since i Was 13). 2 packs of marlboros a day. Yes there are benefits. Huge ones. Zero negative effects.
If someone says their are, they are lying. This doesn't include those that are allergic to PG, etc.

If you smoked and switch to vaping not only did you almost completely stop getting cancer causing effects, but the vape actually helps you clear out the shit that was built up in your lungs for years.

Wow almost 8 minutes of a guy saying absolutely nothing of note. But it looked like he may have been in a doctors office so we better listen because we’re meant to think he’s an authority on the issue.

It's the clickbait misleading title that's the main problem. Then the moron essentially implies that smoking and vaping have the same long term health effects.

Every day, I see the incessant commercials claiming that all nicotine in vape juice "may contain toxic metal fragments", and claim such metals could be lead, chromium, and nickel. How much truth could be behind these commercials?

Is this something that one might worry about if they buy pre-loaded pods? Or is it something one might worry about from the extraction process of nicotine from tobacco? Or is it all just 100% unadulterated bullshit?

What you need to be concerned with is the temperatures for each of these different metals. The temps required for these metals to release their toxins is fairly high and needs to be sustained for fairly long times. That said as these metals are heated repeatedly, yes they wear down and so do the temps required.

There is a way to mitigate your risk of these toxins. Change your coils out every so often. Most already manufactured coils you get it is safe to say a general rule of thumb is to swap them every two weeks to month. You can tell when the coil/s start looking gross even after cleaning them.

Some of us who make our own coils and have a bit of knowledge on metals, might make coils last longer. That's us taking our chances. You don't need to even if you start doing your own. You can stick to swapping out coil/s every two weeks to month. This will generally ensure you're not letting the metals wear down and risk getting toxins.

No, it isn't bullshit but it's not the "whole picture" either. It comes from the metals used in the coil/s. See my response above for a bit more fuller picture.

I've not given the "whole picture" either but for the sake of keeping an explanation simple. I've not obscured, or misled either. I may not be able to give you the whole picture as it gets rather technical & me explaining can only go so far, out of my own shortcomings.

To be real simple, if you change coil/s every two weeks you greatly mitigate risk of toxins getting into yourself. You don't need to be direly concerned over such a minor risk.

While not bullshit the ads don't offer full info in an attempt to wield fear as a weapon. That is propaganda. Should you be concerned? Yes, a little. Need to go hop in a fall out shelter? No. Is there a way to vape as safe as you can? Yes, see above.

Kanthal wire likely "breaks down" at around 1470 degrees F.

Stainless Steel is around 1400 degrees Celsius and go as high as 1900′C.

Kanthal spefically was designed to keep taking heat without taking much damage. We pulse heat our coils and generally do not sustain the heat. Look up metallurgy as some good reading about temperatures and how heat breaks materials down. You'll see I'm not wrong to tell you it gets technical.

So, someone that vapes at higher temperatures has more to worry about. For instance: I vape at 30 watts, and someone else vapes at 120 watts. The person vaping at 120 watts is taking a higher risk.

Back to the commercials. Unless there is something else to it, they are basically lying. They say "vaping nicotine puts you at risk". They said nothing about vaping 0mg juice, which is what most cloud chasers use. They insinuate the juice with nicotine contains the metals in that sense.

Eh, yes and no both. It is a bit technical, ... (Trying to keep it simple here.) someone hitting at 120 watts might only need two seconds pulse to you taking eight seconds at 30 watts. So yes it seems they're at greater risk but are actually at less. It is a bit open ended but yes, generally higher temp could infer higher risk.

I'm sure someone likely will correct me, ... explain it better. Trust me, I know they will and bully for them too if it's the one I think. I don't care, I'm explaining as best I can.

Uh huh, caught that too did ya? ;) :) Nicotine can constrict your blood vessels. Yes, it does. Is it carcinogenic? Not by itself, no. Is it toxic? Yes but again this all depends on toxicology and physiology. Me using 18 mg nicotine per ml juice strength is not toxic to me where as you using 6 mg per ml might be toxic to you.

Also think of a lab rat eating sweet tasty apple pie. The rat will gobble up all it can. Eventually the rat will explode from over eating. "You can always get too much of a thing." It's about dose size.

Does nicotine contain toxic metals? Not that I'm aware, no. But be advised I'm no toxicologist, doctor, scientist.I base my knowledge on what I've read up on though from those who are such. I can not cite you sources as I did not create a bibliography for my own personal research. And gee sorry, the human mind only recalls seven things at one time. I'm lucky to manage half that. *chuckles* Life, she's a fun one she is. :)

I don't chase clouds or flavor. I vape to enjoy using nicotine. If I get some modest clouds and flavor, it's just icing on the cake. :)

oooh, that's a shame. i'm sorry. i was just joking, too.
I know, s'okay. Seems my hypothalamus didn't work proper from embryo stage on. Lack of smell because the hormones needed to tell olfactory (your smelling) nerves to grow. There's a few other things entailed, one is yes, I honestly was slightly brain damaged from birth. *grins* I get a kick out of that because I'm MENSA level smart. My wife is smrtr though so she keeps me in line. :D :)

Hello fellow vapers! Haven't been online in a while but thought I'd say "Hey"!

I re-read my old posts and stand by everything I previously said about vaping! After decades of cigs I am happy to report that vaping may have saved my life. I'm old now, older than before and have been a daily vaper for over 6 years. Med stats all good except the stuff that effects nearly all old guys and has nothing to do with nicotine, smoking or vaping.

The only thing I wish is that my smoking friends would join me in a vape and toss the smokes!
Two of my friends still smoke after decades and their health is going in the wrong direction. Both are dealing with heart and circulation related serious problems. I did manage to convince one of them to try nic salts pen and it worked for a few weeks and she was completely off smoking. An emotional disruption in her life and bam! back on the cigs. I'll keep trying though and maybe 2022 will be the year she finally moves forward.

I wish vaping had been around in the 70's, I would have saved enough cash to buy a new Mercedes and enjoyed better health during the prime of my life!

Hang in there fellow vapers and have a good new year!

Peace and Love,
Dave

There are no long term studies.
However I'm going to make an educated guess and say that contracting lung cancer from it will be almost impossible since none of the ingredients in vape liquid are carcinogenic.
We've used smoke and fog machines for years at night clubs and the people working there every day have never suffered ill effects that I know of. Those fog machines were the inspiration for first gen ecigs. I remember taking hits directly off a fog machine at a friend's house just to blow out huge clouds of fog. This was around the time ecigs were tiny little things and seen as a novelty. As a side note, when they were first released the people selling them were offering everyone a hit off them in the shopping mall, including people as young as 13.
Unless of course some flavours undergo pyrolysis (basically heat causing certain molecules to break down into other molecules) which could produce some carcinogens. I don't know exactly what the flavours are but they're probably food grade and not designed to be heated up to the point that they are, so some may pyrolyse. The question is do they form carcinogens? AFAIK there are no studies on this.

One educated guess I would make is that vapers will have a higher incidence of mouth and throat cancer than non-vapers. This is based on the fact that drinking hot liquids (think steaming hot cups of coffee) can cause mouth and throat cancer. I'm sure almost everyone has burned their mouth or throat a little at least once, especially if you vape hot. You probably inhale a lot more hot vapour too than someone who drinks hot drinks. Hot back spatter would also be a risk.

https://www.keckmedicine.org/piping-hot-drinks-may-lead-to-cancer-of-the-esophagus/

Then we get into toxic metals. Do you know what your coil is made out of if you buy prebuilt coils and wicking material? Do you dry fire your own coils or pre-wound coils? Nickel and chromium can form some nasty carcinogenic compounds. Ever see a coil go green after dry firing? That's probably chromium oxide, which is a respiratory carcinogen. The question is; is there enough of it to present significant risk?
https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/csem/chro...tract irritants and can,with Cr(VI) compounds.

All of this is speculative but I would guess mouth and throat cancer is the thing to watch out for most.

I like using wire attained from Temco. Usually, I prefer Kanthal . The heat required for leaching of toxins from it is a sustained heat, not a heat as we use when vaping. Yes, you could possibly get some minute leaching if you're not careful doing dry firing.

Even using stainless Steel, or NiChrome requires a sustained heat for leaching. What I'm saying is the risk of toxins is greatly mitigated. Is it still possible a person could get metallurgic toxins from vaping? Yes it is possible.

Is the amount enough to cause serious harm? Maybe cumulatively if a person were to be vaping like they breathe. Most do not vape that way though. Not saying it absolutely could not happen, or absolutely will not cause harm.

Am saying the harm is greatly mitigated to being so minute as to not engage grave concern. Not saying it's trivial but not saying we need to be Chicken Little either. Be aware the possibility is there. The possibility of invisible purple unicorns existing is as well though.

As to the flavorings we tend to use water soluble based ones. This means no oil/s to get into our lungs. If you vape a year like you breathe, you might get the same amount of water/moisture in your lungs as taking a daily shower.

Yes there were/still are a few chemicals we watch out for in flavorings. There's is minimal risk if any of the dreaded and ultra-hyped up "popcorn lung" from vaping. Many of us don't use custard flavors either so as to avoid one of the two, or three chemicals we look out on.

I like using unflavored most of the time. Do add a few drops of flavoring now and then to break up monotony. I vape to use nicotine, enjoy some modest clouds & the over all hobby of vaping.

Again, not saying vaping is absolutely 100% iron clad safe. Do say the risk/s involved with vaping are mitigated to using a bit of common sense, maintaining your gear (inclusive of swapping out coils after some time of use for sanitary reasons as well as general wear). The risk mitigation drew me to vaping away from cigarettes and tobacco. I stayed for the special cookies. :)

Whether I use pre-wound coils, or wrap my own, I always dry fire them to burn off any residue that may be on the wire from the factory. That being said, the color is always orange. Once I made the mistake of firing too long, and fused the wires within the coil. But, I never vape with heat settings that high, or for that long. It is always MTL (Mouth To Lung), and my mouth only holds so much vapor. Add to the fact that I don't like anything that tastes burnt, not even a good steak.

I sure don't want to burn my cotton, or waste the juices I mix with high settings. Talk about mitigating risk factors while vaping... I wasn't even thinking about that. It was all about enjoying vaping as a way to stay off the cancer sticks and enjoy my own flavors.
