Am I just damned/doomed to fail again?

Me? I'm basically a reclusive hermit, retired, and live in small town with a house full of cats. I seriously tried, but failed miserably, to quit smoking & start vaping about 4 1/2 years ago. After struggling through several frustrating months of expensive trial & error back then, I finally threw in the towel and gave up and gave away all the stuff I'd bought. The urge to give it another shot hit me in October and, well, this latest experience is rapidly becoming "like deja vu all over again." It's hard for me to really explain all the various problems & issues I've encountered -- but I guess it mostly boils down to the fact that everything seems to be too hot & harsh for my mouth and/or tongue to comfortably handle.

On the juice side of the ledger, shades of tobacco flavors are my preference for an ADV. I'm confident of not having any PG/VG allergy-type issues, stay well hydrated, and have experimented with lots of different brands, VG/PG ratios, nicotine levels, nic salts, and regular freebase. As for gear, I'm definitely not chasing clouds and have never used sub-ohm coils or gone higher than maybe mid-teen watts.

This time around I started with the old Halo G6 and moved to pod styles like Smok's Infinix & Nova and the Aspire Nautilus AIO. I've smoked at least a carton a week for 45 years and should be able to easily tolerate a dinky little cigalike or pod system, right? Nope. They were borderline OK for a little while, but the roof of my mouth soon gets so torn up & burnt & raw that I have to stop vaping and go back to cigs until my mouth tissues are healed enough to try again.

I also purchased a few MTL tank starter kits hoping to discover an adjustable, possibly more satisfying & less irritating solution. Added to the arsenal now are Innokin Kroma-A w/ Zenith, CoolFire Mini w/ Zenith D22, GeekVape Flint, and Aspire Zelos 2.0 w/ Nautilus 2S. Arriving this week will be a throwback Nautilus Mini tank plus an eLeaf iStick 30W kit. Surprisingly, the tiny Flint has given me the best taste and is closest to the less airy/coolish vape I'm desperately wanting. Trying only their highest ohm coils and lowest wattages, the highly-touted Zeniths and N2S all are pretty bad so far. At least for me. Too hot, mouth scorching, nasty tasting, awful. Unpleasant & terribly disappointing.

It probably sounds like I'm merely venting but I truly am looking to hear your experiences/advice/suggestions/opinions/comments and will attempt to answer your questions to me. Am I the only one in the world who could chain smoke analogs all day long but can't physically handle more than a few hours (sometimes only a few minutes) with a vape device? I have a drawer full of replacement coils, know how to properly prime them, and when to change them out.

Believe me, I enjoy vaping ... until it starts to hurt. I'd like to succeed this time and make the switch for good but I just can't go on like this much longer. Are there better ways to utilize the equipment I already have or should I get something else? What do others use for a strictly MTL, tight draw, low power, cooler, comfortable all day vape?

I really appreciate you taking time to read this. Thanks & Peace!

What nicotine are you using? Also are you chain vaping? As in one puff after another. The coil gets hotter the more and more you puff in succession. If they have adjustable airflow you could try going with a little more air. You have to figure out the right ratio of air to heat. If it's a loose MTL and your pulling like a cig then you made need to run with the loose MTL. Like a restricted direct lung hit. Hope this helps. And hope you can get back to vaping. Other helpful members will probably chime in too.

Wow, thanks for replying! Started off at 18mg but now vary between 15mg & 12mg, depending on how each one is tasting. Also occasionally use 30mg nic salts but like regular juice better. I could tell anything lower (have some 3 & 6) wasn't doing the trick to make up for my cigs. I'm sure I chain vape for a few minutes every once in a while, but definitely try not to do that. I guess the heat/air ratio is a nightmare for me to figure out and I haven't really come close to an answer yet after these past few months of trying. Heck, there may just not be an answer for the way my mouth reacts. Tight MTL, more like my cigs, feels more enjoyable right now than any type of DL'ing I've tried.

Hell for a pod or MTL system 15mg should be fine. Hopefully someone else will chime in shortly.

Welcome @cathouse and I hope you enjoy you stay~!

When I first quit smoking which was Cold Turkey because cutting down didn't work for me I know that vaping irritated my throat and made me cough for the first few weeks. It is the lack of all those other chemicals that numb your airways and I have heard the same from people trying to quit and start vaping. Now I am not a Doctor and don't play one on the Internet this is just my personal experience. Give it time and Good Luck

Most commercial ejuice causes serious mouth inflammation for me.
And no it is not a PG thing. I vape 50/50 PG/VG and it is fine as ling as it has flavorings I can tolerate.
so I started DIY and found that most of the flavors tried did the same thing.
Found 1 bought tobacco flavor I could vape.
Clayton brand sold at gas stations and tobacco shops, but I think it went away.
I have found a DIY that uses Capella Vanilla Custard V1 that is now my All day vape.

could not find clayton but recalled this brand was also ok for me to vape and not a bad tobacco.

Sound OK to me, too. When I tried this back in '14 everybody said I should start at 24mg. Advice given to me this time was 18mg. I honestly don't think nic level is a big problem for me, high or low. Really had no trouble with 50mg salt or 24mg regular. 12mg is fine, too, but 15 just feels about right. When I'm able to vape anything at all for any length of time, I don't miss/crave smokes one little bit. I have managed to cut down a bunch (except for the days my mouth is healing) but just am so PO'd how it messes up the roof of my mouth.

What's weird in my situation is that my throat is perfectly fine and there's no irritation there or coughing at all. But, damn, my mouth is taking a beating and it almost drives me to tears.

6-12 MG should be fine. Start with 12 and after a while drop down.
I too tried 24 at first was horrible, then 12 mg for a month or so then dropped to 6mg.
Am now down to 2 mg but bigger clouds :)
I was a 40 yr + smoker also a carton a week.
Just passed 4 yrs smoke free with vaping.

I also DIY a decent tobacco juice.

I suppose you might have a point there. All I've tried is about a dozen different commercial makers to see if it was one or two in particular that caused my problems. Apparently they ALL do. Hadn't though much about common flavorings being responsible. Will certainly check out your link. I've used that site before. Thanks!

check tobacco shops for the Buck Naked american tobacco. It is where I found mine.
For me if I keep on vaping an offending juice it seriously inflames mouth, throat and even makes lungs sore.
The first sign for me is tingly lips after vaping a juice for just a few times.
I have learned to toss that flavor, if i keep on vaping it things get bad fast.

I am a minority, perhaps you are too.
Vaping is not as universally accepted by the body as is smoking but much less bad for ya and cheaper too.

Where ya at? If you can't find any of that eliq I could maybe maybe make you some Cromwells Camel and send it to ya?
if so PM me do not put personal info on the general board.

Cool. My last stockup was with a few different 12mgs. You know, I'd love to be here in 4 years writing exactly what you just did! For now at least, clouds matter not one iota. Might be around later for advice on your DIY juice, too.

I've heard of that brand but not actually seen it. No legit brick & mortar tobacco shops anywhere near this little town in TX, but I'll surely do some online searching.

Like I've mentioned, I really feel like the only one in the world who's having my specific issues. Lips/gums/throat/lungs are totally fine. Tongue may get some very slight irritation, but only the roof of my mouth takes bigtime damage and causes all the discomfort. Real bummer.

I think that most with vaping issues like us just quickly give up on vaping and go back to smoking.
And why we seldom see them on vape boards.
afaik I am the only one on here with my vaping sensitivity to most flavorings used in vaping.

I hung in there and got it to work, chances are you can too.

MY cats are all outside cats. :D Live in the country. Never got a cat on purpose they just show up and like a sucker I feed em...
Hell, most of mine were either rescues or just showed up here, too. Not really in the country, but happen to have a couple acres of woods around my house in this neighborhood. Except for a newish litter of kittens, they're all spayed/neutered and running around this cathouse of a home. I always take care of a few ferals outside (along with raccoons/possums/squirrels/birds/etc).

Anyway, THANK YOU Sucker. I love it that you're feeding them. Real men love cats, too.

I'd really like to thank you for writing about that. Makes me feel not quite so alone and helps explain why my many searches for folks with similar issues never turned up much info at all.

This may be a dumb question. I have a bottle of Halo Fusion (unflavored) 12mg VG used only for occasional mixing with other juices. If I try to vape it straight and still have mouth symptoms, would that completely rule out flavorings as my trigger?

Anyway, because it sounds so good, I'll follow your link to go ahead and put together an order including some Buck Naked later this evening.

Have you tried rinsing your mouth with warm salt water at night and in the morning after brushing your teeth? Helps me if I feel irritation. Might help to rinse out the eliquid coating in your mouth.
I use baking soda and water along with toothpaste for brushing my teeth too.

Good info & sounds like a great tip. To be honest, I doubt I could even find any salt or baking soda in my kitchen! Now if you'd suggested coffee, sugar, chocolate, or cat food, that'd be easy for me. Seriously, I simply use an electric toothbrush and Act Dry Mouth. Probably oughta buy some salt anyway. Thanks!

What exactly is happening with your mouth? Buck Naked American and Turkish was 2 of the Tobaccos I first started with and vaped them exclusively for a very long time and you can find it available online.

http://www.bucknakedecigs.com/american-tobacco-e-liquid/
I'm not great at explaining things, but it's something akin to having sandpaper scraped on the roof of my mouth. Especially towards my teeth in the front, so it might just be mostly where the vapor is hitting? It seems raw and burnt, and it almost feels like there are little nicks in the tissue, in a way that's somehow different than burning your mouth with a too hot slice of pizza. I wish I could describe it better but this is something that has only happened to me while trying to switch from smoking to vaping.

Worth a shot- my dentist tells me to use this and it helps a lot when I get mouth irritation, works great for sore throats too.
What no salt at your house???? Cheap enough to buy salt and try rinsing with warm salt water daily and see if that helps.
Good Luck to you-
quitting cigarettes is hard, I smoked for 30+ years, desperate to quit, so 4 years ago bought Mistic Bridge kits, some Haus liquids and cartos from Walgreens and gave myself 2 weeks to cut back cigarettes set my quit date December 1, 2014 and have not had a single cigarette in over 4 years!
Was it easy for me- NO, I needed much Will Power too! I gave away the last of my carton of smokes and refused to ever buy any more.
The eLeaf 30w is good- I used the eLeaf GS Air Tanks too for a while. I also used the Kanger Evod tanks .

Are you getting a Hot Vape? You said you are a Low Wattage vaper right?
YES, to both. That's kinda the crux of my situation, and I know I did a lousy job of explaining it in my lengthy opening post. Everything I've used just seems too darn hot for me & the roof of my mouth to handle. Is it the equipment or my weird mouth physiology?

From what I've read, the Nautilus AIO operates 1.8ohm @ 12W and I think the Smok pods are somewhere around 15W. Both my Nautilus BVC 1.8ohm and Zenith 1.6ohm coils are rated 10-14W and I've tried vaping those between 7-12 watts. The GeekVape Flint 1.6ohm is marked 6-9W and that's probably why this one seems to be the least irritating (but bothersome nonetheless). Not sure of the wattage, I believe the device can switch between 3.2, 3.5, 3.8 amps.

Yeah, I've been divorced for 25 yrs & don't really cook or season anything - surviving mostly on junk food, sugar, caffeine, nicotine! I promise to pick up some salt on my next grocery store outing.

I really do appreciate your words of encouragement and it's so nice to hear about your successful journey to becoming an ex-smoker! THANK YOU

No pressure- everyone quits cigarettes their own way- some like me cut back and set a quit date, others quit cigarettes when they started vaping- and others dual use till they feel comfortable to quit!
You are not a failing or doomed- you are still trying!
Hoping you can overcome your sore mouth and give vaping another chance!
Talking to people who have been there is a great way too give you encouragement and pick you up when you fall.

I run my Nautilus BVC 1.8Ω Coils at around 10W or so, give or take half a watt. At 12W it burns the coils with chain vaping even one or two times. Trying to help and I am pretty sure someone will give you a suggestion that will be your answer.

Just a thought how long are you using the coils for before this happens?

For me the only way was to do it cold turkey and deal with 2 weeks of cigarette withdrawals that was absolute hell. But I had made my mind up and said No More. Dual use and trying to cut down didn't work because I was only fooling myself I was cutting down.

Yikes! Sounds like quite a conundrum. I’m sorry vaping isn’t easy for you, but you seem determined to make it work. Have you tried vaping something besides tobacco? I don’t know if it makes a difference, but maybe it’s tobaccos you’re having a problem with. Again, not an expert of any kind, but maybe trying a different profile might do the trick. Maybe a nice mellow bakery? If it’s not PG/VG or nic, then it’s probably the flavors. Or the specific flavor house they’re using? I don’t know! The only time I experience anything like you’re describing is when I over vape a citrus dominant juice. My mouth/tongue gets a little raw.....so I just switch to something else.

Some citrus and some cinnamon will irritate my mouth if I vape too much of it. I am at 3mgs and some 0 nic. Warm Salt water rinses help me.
I constantly sip water too.

Cinnamon doesn’t bother me....just citrus, but it has to be a citrus dominant juice. Which is why the Dinner Lady clone is taking so long.....argh.....

It really helps me to know what others like you are doing and I'm so glad you replied. I've been starting off a new primed coil around 7.5W and slowly working upwards towards that 10W. Does that sound OK? Can it be maintained below 10W?

Can it be maintained below 10W?

When I first started vaping I was running the 1.8Ω Aspire BVC coils in my Nautilus Mini at 7.5-8.5W and slowly worked it up to 12W but started to kill coils too fast and it did irritate my throat if I remember right. I do not have experience with the AIO but I think the coils are the same or very similar. Don't fret because many of us are or were, low wattage vapers. I actually have been running nothing but sub ohm tanks and TC Sub Ohm tanks for the last few months. My tastes change like I just switched from a Sangria DIY to Apple Cider DIY from Tobacco blends all day...............

I've only quickly sampled very few flavors that didn't have some kind of tobacco overtone (coffee/mocha, chocolate/cocoa, caramel, tiramisu, and something that was like plum/grape but nothing truly citrus) and didn't really enjoy any of them, but many made nice mixers with tobacco.

Frankly, I'm not even sure what a bakery flavor really is. What would be your suggestions for me to try?

Maybe instead of aiming the vape at the roof of your mouth aim it towards your throat. Maybe the extra distance might disperse the heat a little more.

Sent from my LM-Q610(FGN) using Tapatalk
Hey, thanks, I guess maybe I should pay closer attention to where it's aimed. I don't know, maybe I just naturally aim upwards without even realizing it during a MTL session. The only time I've purposely set out to aim towards my throat is when I try a DL hit.

I'm amazed there have been so many great suggestions and sincere attempts to help me! I'll try to reply to everybody but I hope a blanket THANK YOU will do in case I miss someone!

One thing I know about myself is that I have the 'bitter gene'. Google it if you do not know what it is.

As far as the wattage goes. too high and it will start tasting burned or scorched. Too low and not much vapor at all and might gurgle a bit.
Whatever in between those 2 points suits you best is best for you.
There is no set or best wattage for everyone or all similar tanks, etc.

I vape identical tanks and wind up setting the wattage a bit different on them with as close to identical coils and wicking in them as I can get.

I personally prefer a warm but not hot vape. Some like it hot some do not.

Oh, boy....that’s a loaded question. I can tell you what I like, which overwhelmingly is bakeries, but I don’t wanna send you on an expensive trek to find out you don’t like them! Or can’t vape them! And I am almost exclusively a DIY’er, so it’s been a while since I’ve bought commercial juice.

If you wanna go down the experiment road, I would go to Vape Wild, Sauce LA, Fuggin, TMAXX and pick up the smallest bottle you can of something with cake in the title...or cream....or maybe custard.....they’re at least on the cheaper side so experimenting won’t hurt so much. Or go somewhere you can sample juices.

Otherwise, DIY would be my other suggestion, but that’s a HUGE rabbit hole. Then, at least, you can control what goes into your juice.

But, for now, my suggestion is to get another profile of juice and see if it’s the tobacco cause it sounds like you’ve covered all the other bases.

Hah, I've shopped before at Vape Wild and since they'd always give me free samples with each purchase, I might already have something like that on hand without knowing it. If tobacco wasn't in the title, I just put the sample bottles in a drawer and have at least a dozen of them.

No way I'll get into DIY, but I'll certainly check out the other places you mentioned and consider different flavor profiles. Thanks so much!

I started out with Tobacco flavors and now pretty much only vape Vanilla Custard.
Virtually all the fruit flavors either react badly with me or taste too chemically.
And I have tried several doughnut flavorings and all taste of play dough to me.

But then as I have said I am an odd vaper.
Another thing to consider is artificial sweeteners which are in a many/most ejuice and I cannot tolerate. Horrible lingering aftertaste.
Would rather siphon gas that drink a diet soda. The gas taste goes away quicker ;)

Apologies. I reread your post and I missed the unflavored VG the first time.
Straight VG does not wick well in many MTL setups and could cause a hot vape.
50/50 seems to vape best in most MTL setups.
VG is a lot thicker viscosity than PG.
But high PG can be harsh to vape.

You don't seem all that odd to me! And you've been a really big help with all your replies to me. Can't thank you enough for the comments & advice! btw, I'm still reading about the Bitter Gene (don't think I have it like you do)...
