I am startin to feel that envy too. I would love to have something to build right now, but no clue where to start. So, that brings me to another question for our builders.

You walk in to your work station and find all your spools of wire gone. You go to your computer and you order your typical spools online.

What two spools of wire (or more) would you tell a beginner to buy to build and learn from?

Just askin for a friend.
I'm not a pro like a lot of the folks here, but there is a common theme here. Cores of 26 or 28 and wrap wire if you so choose the venture to doing Clapton's of 36-40. Your choice of metal, Ni80, Kanthal A1, or SS. With those you can build many different coils to suit your fancy from simple single wire coils to Aliens or stagger fused and everything in between. I hope your friend enjoys their journey and maybe convince you to join in on the fun.

Can you mute the kanthal with Ni80 and/or ss in a complex coil?
im not sure what you mean by 'mute the kanthal'. i cant actually taste any difference between the metals so i may not be able to answer you, but i do mix them a lot to manage my resistance and coil performance....as an example, i recently needed some very large coils for the aromamizer plus on a single battery mech mod. to be able to get the big coils to light up faster, and still be efficient enough to finish a full tank on one battery, i traded a strand of n80 for 316 (in a three core n80 alien build). it brought the resistance down a little (safely), increased the wattage and maintained the same coil mass, which fixed all my efficiency and ramp up problems. if you are talking flavor, then youll have to ask someone with a more sophisticated palette ;)

I have a question...since switching to ss almost exclusively I'm not fond of kanthal but prefer to keep in the .2-.4 range. Can you mute the kanthal with Ni80 and/or ss in a complex coil?
Lots of folks will use Kanthal ribbon with N80 or SS frames and wrap to meet their resistance goal like @mach1ne mentioned. The only rules we have is Ohm's Law.

I build a lot of hybrid coils to meet resistance needs. KA1 cores, N80 ribbon, SS316L wrap, blah blah blah. I will say, I dont care for the taste of KA1. But if you hybrid it with N80 or Ss316L, it seems to help the flavor IMO.

That's what I was hoping. Kanthal isn't necessarily horrible tasting, just not a preference these days.

You and WMPac make me want to buy a single coil atty that can accommodate those coils. Pretty sure the Recurve isn't up for it. Have a Drop but it just doesn't suit me with a single.
My last build could easily work in the recurve. Drop 1 ply of ribbon on each side and use 30g for the frames. 3.5 (4) wraps on a 3mm id is .18 ohms (prefire). Could probably squeeze one more wrap in and lower the watts to make up for less wire. Intricate building is no different than any other type. Everything can be adjusted to accommodate most vape styles.
That last image looks like you are vaping a mummified cat or beef jerky.
LOL! Yah I am hard on my coils. I got through at least 30ml a day. And I like super sweet flavors.

Not really, unless your using an extremely small amount of KA. I can tell a difference between a full n80 build and a mixed alloy. I mean it is muted a bit. But it doesn't completely counteract it.

If your starting from complete scratch then ... well ... start from scratch. Get some 26, 28, 36 and 38. Put the 36 and 38 away and practice getting good clean evenly wrapped naked single core wire. And then practice installing them. Clean wraps means your coils will heat from the center out evenly like they should. And that provides the best vape. And practice installing them in a away that doesn't destroy the shape of the coil. You can play with the coil a bit to straighten it out after you screw it down. Once you get a hang of that (it shouldn't take long). Pic up your 36 and learn to clapton. Once your comfortable with that do it with 38. Then learn to fuse 2 cores together with 36 and 38. Quite honestly that is all you need to be able to do to get a fantabulous vape. If you get to that point and still want to learn more there is a myriad of help and information in the coil building subforum and youtube. And plenty of us builders always willing to help others progress.

Kanthal A1 does have a tendency to give a metallic taste initially when the coils are still very new, but the good news is there's something that you can do to prevent that from happening. The solution that works is, before you wick them up to start vaping on them, repetitively keep dry firing the newly built coils for more than several minutes whilst watching out to not overheat anything in the process so it takes quite a bit of extra patience, but you'll see it pays off in the end. One of the main important reasons why Kanthal A1 is not a preference these days is hidden in the fact waa-aaaa-aaaaaaay too many people got brainwashed from looking at the rainbow colors of SS 316L on instagram; the other reason are people who think they know something about getting the best flavor when the reality is they haven't even tried using the wire to make flavorful builds and find out for themselves what the wire can actually taste like so... coloritis is the culprit.

agree completely gopher best place to start is 26g, 36g wraps easy to see and easy to work with both of these

This is mostly true. But. I vaped nothing but kanthal for a long time. It's what I learned on and I didn't even know there where other vaping alloys lol. even if you preheat the kanthal appropriately it still gives off a tinge. And I always noticed it. I just assumed it was just a part of vaping. In the end though preburning it well does help bring down the volume on the metalic taste.
Now to address coloring ... Good kanthal will color if heated correctly. The colors just aren't as bright and flashy as SS or Nickel based alloys. They tend to be pastels. I personally love kanthal colors.

I do an MTL build for one of my Billet boxes. Single coil in a steam tuner RBA. 28ñ80 5 wrap 3mm I'd. .81. Not above an ohm but with the MTL condensation plug it's a great vape for some 9mg nic salt

I wasn’t vaping in the days of genesis tanks, just curious has anyone ever used mesh as a wicking material in an RDTA?

I've seen discussion here on VU on using mesh in a RDA, but not in a RDTA. The mesh doesn't bend easily which means vertical coils would be the best. You would need to plug any unused juice holes in a RDTA as well to avoid leaks. I'm not a GenHead so this is pure speculation on my part. PulseVape would be knowledgeable on the subject, however tagging is against the rules in the challenge thread. I'll let you break them KP!:giggle:

For me, the tinge that it still gives off even if you kept dry firing it repeatedly for several minutes, intermittently whilst rubbing a few drops of water along the side of the build deck a few times, letting everything cool down completely after that, and then repeating these same steps half a dozen times, is simply not there. At least not if the type of vape I get from the coil build in question is the warm wet dense saturated type that gives BOTH big clouds AND intense flavor combined with a lush depth or "fullness" of the flavor bringing out the subtle notes in the flavor not by holding back ones that aren't subtle, but by keeping the whole balance properly intact (IMO anyway).

I never said Kanthal doesn't color. Just that, in direct comparison of course, SS 316L colors so much more glamourously in the eyes of so many viewers it's ultimately become the new hype mainly because of that obvious fact so in the vast majority of cases the flavor and the feel of the vape have become secondary to that despite all the classical denial that surrounds this... not pointing any fingers here, but just as a general rule these days there's a rainbow-colored elephant standing in the room.

Genesis tanks was all the rave when I started vaping, and that is what I started building on, it wasn’t a easy pleasant experience, getting the mesh right to wick, and wrapping a coil around it, was sure a challenge for a new builder, luckily I found the kayfun pretty quickly, and things became smoother :)

Interesting!! I'll have to try repeated cycles of dry firing. I've pulsed the crap out of KA trying to get it to go away. Just not quite as methodically as you suggested. Learn something new every day :D

I do agree with your point though. People tend to gravitate towards shiny things. And most will drink the koolaid when put in front of them. The coil artist's hobby has given way to a placebo effect causing many vapers to "feel" like they are getting a better vape just because the coil looks cool. This is just completely false. I've made a number of sweet looking coils that vape like absolute junk. But, I'm ok with that. Because Sometimes I'm not making a coil to vape. Sometimes I'm making an intricate display as an outlet for my artistic side. aka - I'm sure a Picasso would taste like shit too ;)

I did see, Todd I think it was, could be wrong, use a roll of mesh from tank bottom to the top of juice port, then cotton through the coil and rested on the mesh

Yeah it was Todd just wondering if anyone in the community ever tried it?

Well, I sure wouldnt - I disagree with Todd that tilting to wick is a "design flaw" since tilting to wick is wayyyyy faster than waiting for mesh and cotton to suck juice upwards and into the coil. And RDTAs get tilted with typical use, anyway, unless you vape while staring at the floor like an embarassed person lol

Then, I shouldn't even be talking about it - I don't like RDTAs anymore, heck I don't like RTAs and I barely get along with squonkers (and only if I can soak the coil) because dripping into an RDA is a guaranteed way of wicking juice xD

I'm on the fence about this. There are days where, no matter how good the build and wick job is, I just feel like there's to much unvaporized juice filling my mouth with a pop and paint or blehing drip. Wouldn't even call it spit back. Just full saturation. So, I'll grab the squonker or just only drip on the cotton/wells. But then there are days where I NEED to paint the coils to get the vape I'm looking for.

After I threw a really embarassing fit, I would order 28g and 40g (pick whichever alloy you like) and make fused claptons, if I was just learning to build. They work, they last, they don't spit, and with 28g you have a lot of choices with heat and resistance - put two fused claptons in paralell, get more heat, use one strand of 28 to keep it cool, etc

Once you learn to make fused claptons you will consistently and easily and cheaply be able to make enjoyable coils :)

Even if I'm rocking a good ol' 3 core alien the same thing applies. I guess you could call me a mood vaper? I don't have a specific vape that is always the right one. Yesterday the squonker was just right for me. But today I HAVE to drip directly on the coil to feel satisfied. I'm just a weirdo lol

Same here. I think we showed up in the Prorape sub around the same time..: unless I’m thinking of someone else.

I remember trying a genie at a shop before I bought my first rba.
I liked the vape, then I watched them build it.

The guy turns and grabbed a Kayfun, built it; and, I was sold before even trying it.

I posted this on page 5.

My coils are pretty boring. For my dual coil RTAs I mainly use 26-28GA KA1 or SS316L round wire. I usually space my SS coils tho. I almost always use a 3mm jig. I will occasionally use 24ga wire but dat ramp doe.

I have a few single coil RTAs. For those I like fused clapton or alien coils from AVS. I like to vape anywhere between 45-75W.

I have a few RDAs but have never gotten into them much. That may change.

I sometimes set up my RDTAs and use them too. I lean towards KA1 clapton wire in those. I always use Cotton Bacon V2. in them. I have Japanese cotton pads I use but not in the RDTAs. My RTAs get either cotton from pads or CB V2. it depends on the atty.

I have several RBA heads for subohm tanks I use. Again, I've just been using round wire in them. Some rba heads work great, others no so much. I like the right amount of air when I take a draw. Sometimes the AFC can't help with this IMO.

I still enjoy 50% pg vg in a tobacco mix on an ego. That's my comfort vape. I have just begun squonking, and I am loving it. I used to have to buy coils for my set ups eg smok baby beast etc. Then I saw how much money the coils were costing me, and I am in the very early stages of building coils.
I am rebuilding bvc coils and the kanger type in my sleep now. Saving me a fortune on coils.
I am a mouth to lung, and I tend to take long draws. For that, I like a wattage around 25 to 30, and I like limited air vents. This gives me a tight and flavorful draw. I like 1.6 ohm on the cartomizer type, but I tend to build coils @ 0.8 ohm for my squonking devices.
I started out like a bull to the gate in my coil building attempts. I was trying for the Clapton types that some clever people here can make. I think they look beautiful! I soon realised that to get to the level of competence to make anything as good as those beauties, I have to practice and practice.
I am perfecting just getting my wraps uniform. I am checking ohms, and basically making sure that what I make is safe and won't blow my head off.
Simple single kanthal wrap, gives me a satisfactory vape at 0.8 ohms. Yes, I know that I need to trim up the cotton better lol.

Whatever works for you is the key to your vaping happiness. That's for sure. I can makes some decent coils sometimes. I never actually tried a Clapton but once and screwed it up. Start single wire then twisted then fused clapton. Seemed so much easier. I like a staggered clapton though for series builds too though.

I wish I had an atty that could accept a 6ga rod and wrap it in cotton. Ramp up would suck eggs, but surface area would be awesome lol.

No atty to fit it, but kind of funny someone managed to do this without blowing off any of their digits. Around the 7:00 - 7:10 mark is when you see the color change progression which is pretty cool.

I prefer a range of 40-50W, mistakely had my vape in my pocket once unlocked and it revved all the way to 300W, this was painful when I pulled it out and vaped.
I do prefer the direct lung option.
I love the 810 drip tips, I do have a 510 drip tip on one of my other mods but the diameter is rubbish.
My build is on the Creed tank and the Smok RDA (baby version)
I prefer a deep draw unless my mod is heating up.
Kanthal for now till I find other wire in my country. My gauges are standard option seeing as I don't have a lot of choice.
I like a slower ramp up, that way I can take deeper hits.
I wish I could have clouds with flavour, there are different types of moments when I want different hits.
I'm running a wismec box RX gen 3.

Speaking of my build, anyone has any idea why tanks leak everytime I fill up liquid.

Wicking would be my first guess, however some tanks have a pressure affect on them as you close the top cap it wants to equalise inside the chamber

can try

Something called burping the tank

Checking wicking is doing its job

Closing the AFC before you take top cap off (leave it shut until it’s back on

Try not filling up right to the brim

Make sure top cap is secure and not lose to let air in (decent orings)

Don’t leave top cap off for too long

For me it’s normally one of these things

Jeez, just put these two coils that came with my Rimfire RTA on my FreeMax Pro RBA and wow! No idea what they are but they sure got shiny on dry burn. 80 watts on these coils beat out those staggered fused claptons on my Rim. May have to guess they are framed staples, SS or Nichrome. Thank goodness they on my Siegeli 213, they are runnin right down to the .1220181108_014840.jpg
