Unregulated Squonk for a Beginner

I’ve decided to dip my toe on the mech side of vaping and after looking at some of the mod options I’m curious if the unregulated Squonk mods have any disadvantages to them over the tube mods? I currently have an 80w Pulse so I figured if there aren’t any drawbacks I’d just go with an unregulated Pulse mod and pair it with a new rda.

Assuming you know the things you need to know to safely use a mech mod. If you do not, stick with regulated devices while you do your research. Talk to experienced mech users, read up on ohms law, and download a vape tool on to your smartphone. Practice using with hypothetical builds with various conditions and get comfortable with it. Then maybe get a mech. As far as a squonk or tube? Mech mods guzzle juice and a squonk may be more convient so as not to have to constantly drip a thirsty rda. So be safe and educate yourself prior to getting your first mech. Have a great time vaping and may the Force be with you.

I’ve been reading/watching tutorials about mech mods and how they function for a while now and feel I have a pretty good understanding for how to operate one safely. Figuring I’ve done my math correct I’m not sure if I’ll really like a vape so warm but it’s worth exploring. Thanks for the tips!

You build your coils to your preference. It does not have to be a hot vape. Have fun I have recently started to use mechs and I really enjoy them. Just not all the time.

Ever since I got into mechs they became my favorite way to vape. Good luck with it!
Yep, I was once perfectly happy Vaping on Regulated and factory coils but the FDA changed all of that. After getting into rebuilding that was a game changer for me then my first Mech was only going to be the Nuclear option. I fell in love with Mech's and very rarely ever use regulated Mod's, I do have a few but they mostly gather dust. I love my Mech's, best vape experience there is IMO. I compare it to having a Stick or Automatic for a Car, if you just want transportation get an Automatic, if you want to drive get a stick. For me I want to Vape so that's why I use Mech's ;)

I'd avoid the unregulated Pulse - it has a lot of issues and the sag is awful

If you really want a decent unregulated squonker from a big name company, the Lost Vape Furyan is very decent

If high draw is not needed, you can always start in the middle with a Pico Squeeze - inexpensive and tried and true

Thanks for the heads up on the Pulse! I’ve been eying a couple of the Lost Vape mods already so I’ll check the Furyan out too.

Since you asked about disadvantages of a squonk vs tube I'll throw this out there. I like to squonk but one thing that keeps me from using a mech squonker is robustness. Now this may be a totally invalid concern on my part but I feel like my tubes offer me just a little bit more protection in the event that something should go wrong and a battery may vent. All the squonk mods I've seen feel way chincy in comparison to tubes, even the high end ones. Again this is just my way of thinking, I do everything I can to prevent any catastrophic failure from occurring but Murphy always seems to find a way to kick me in the ass.

So what exactly type of protection?

While I agree since squonking has gone mainstream a lot of cheap crap has hit the market, but there have been cheap shit tubes that are flat out dangerous in the wrong hands (or even the right ones) for years - - -

While it may not be “protection” per say but I feel more comfortable with a thick brass tube that MAY give me the opertunity to ditch the mod in the event of a cotastrophy rather than some plastic that’s gonna be gone in a second in the event of a vent.

Ahh but a thick brass tube mod is more likely to actually explode than one with a flip off door and such.
If something goes badly wrong like a short.
with either one it is a BAD deal. 2000 deg fire spewing and such.
Be careful, good wraps, etc and no loose batteries in pockets.

And for squonking a tube mod???

I never meant one was safer than the other, just giving the OP something else to consider. A healthy respect for what could go wrong goes a long way in keeping yourself safe. Buying quality mods and staying smart with your builds and keeping your batteries in good condition are paramount.

And if using a mech always check you build on an ohm meter or regulated mod.
And make sure that your battery (Mooch approved not Efest or rewarp) can support your build safely.
NEVER believe amperage on battery wrap unless Mooch verified.
Virtually no genuine Samsung, sony, or LG cells have the amperage on the wrap.

Well, I’ve been using my Machina tube mech since Tuesday and I still have all my fingers lol. I’ve tried a variety of different batteries, coil sizes, and rda’s and I’ve gotten the flavor I like but the vape temp is actually quite cooler than I had expected. I have some Clapton wire I’m going to try and see if that changes things for the better. I’ve been checking out tube and Squonk mechs online but it seems my tastes in tubes is a little pricey (as an independent tool maker I know the damage clones can do so I tend to avoid them), the Arctic Dolphin Squonk looks nice but the reviews aren’t that great so I may be saving my loot for a month to get a nice step up mech mod.

There's a black and Brass Furyan in the hardware thread for 50 shipped. Hell of a deal and mod is a beast.

I just got a Wismec Luxotic BF. It's a great squonker for smaller RDAs. I use it for all of the good single coil clones I have that just look awkwardly small/disproportionate on my Pulse X.

I love the little guy. It's nice and light but very solid feeling. It's got some safety stuff too like a 100w limit and it allows you shut off the mod with 5 clicks so you don't have to worry about it going off in a bag or your pocket.

Aesthetics it looks very good (got the green) and especially with all of those smaller stainless steel clonRe RDAsI have (hadaly, Narca, etc.). Throw in a Single 20S and you build down to .2 safely since it has a true 30amp CDR. I've got a .21 ohm build in my Narca and it's awesome. Pretty powerful little mod/RDA.

Is it really a 100W limit or just the recommended maximum like the Pico Squeeze has a recommended maximum but will go well over their maximum' wattage. Several reviewers wrongly stated that the Squeeze cut you off at it's Maximum wattage.
I know it is not a regulated maximum on the Pico Squeeze because I tested it.

However the Pico squeeze is a great little unreg squonk mod.

You could definitely be right on that. It says 100W maximum output on the site and although reviewers say it's safety net/feature it sounds more like an informative statement than anything.

Someone said it does have a PCB (I assume power control board?) in it so I'm not sure if that's just to be able to click it on and off or to limit the max wattage too.

If like most all mosfet unregulated mods the chipset only gives 5 click on/off and maybe battery level flashing and low resistance cutoff.
As long as you use good mooch approved battery in it you should be fine providing you do not build stupid low.

Does it have a low resistance shutdown?

Honestly you already have an "unregulated" squonker with the pulse 80w. It has a bypass mode that will let you vape directly from the battery, minus the sag from going through the heavy chip. I would start with your pulse in bypass for a while until you get the hang of it. Once you feel comfortable building for it you can move on to other traditional unregs.

Edit -
On second thought ... maybe not?!? If you get used to building for a mod with lots of sag it wont prepare you for true unregulated. But I'm going to leave the rest up anyways for posterity.

I picked up a Wismec Machina tune mech and really like the way it hits. I tried the Pulse in bypass but it doesn’t pack the punch like the Machina...still an enjoyable vape though. I just saw a dual battery Pulse is coming out and that looks pretty slick.

Yah the pulse80 has ridiculous Vdrop. I use mine but only in VW. It's a decent little squonker with a IMREN Gold 20700 (25a cdr). Can safely do 75w at low volt cutoff. Sure it's made of plastic ... but that means it's light AF :D And the chip seems to keep up pretty decent at 25%+ battery. Once it gets low it has a hard time.

A mech squonk package in the hardware thread. Two pulse and squeezer for 35 I think. Not mine just a plug
