Here is what I know so far...

I'm trying to quit smoking. I know nothing about vaping, except what I learned from the internet in the last 24 hours. Its very confusing and technical and I'm trying to not get lost. I want something simple that works.

I decided to pick on mod/tank company to simplify things. We picked Aspire.

I think I need a mod and a tank (and a battery). The price for new tanks and older seem similar, so I'm getting a newer one, either the Dynamo or Skystar 210 because they have better screens.

I'm getting the Clieto 120 pro because it stainless and glass. I don't understand the new mesh coils.

I'm thinking organic e juice and eventually making my own with liquid nicotine.

I'm not sure what else I need to order now to avoid not having parts or parts breaking (like extra coils perhaps). Aspire is closed this week.

Thanks. I'm not sure I'm asking the right questions yet.

Welcome to the forum David and congrats on making the decision to quit smoking. Its hard to go wrong with an Aspire when just jumping on and while you are learning to quit smoking and learning to vape, it may be a good plan to find a trustworthy local vape shop to aide you in your voyage.

For now you should have the following items (IMO) regardless of what hardware you settle on.
- Batteries- Get some good name brand batteries and get a few extras.
- A mod and an atomizer. I imagine you will be having no shortage of recommendations as folks find your thread. Get something easy and start with the standard power mode (wattage mode). Keep it simple.
- Keep an extra pack of coils on hand. You will be going through them while you kick the coffin nails
- Extra juice.

You will be an old pro in no time if you just focus on getting some distance between you and the cigarettes. Don't get too hung up on little details and finer points. There will be plenty of time for that later. You might also consider some pod devices to just get you to kick the cigs.

Thanks jwill.

I just talked to my local vape shop. They said I can't charge from the mod without creating too much head and irregular charing, so I need an wall charger too. Is that correct?

Sounds like you found yourself a good shop. External chargers are definitely recommended. Golisi, Xtar and Nitcore all make good intelligent chargers. With what batteries cost, its worth shelling a bit of coin and getting a good one.

Hello David -

I'd like to start by saying 'welcome' to the forum as well...

Vaping has completely changed my life. I began smoking at 16 years old... Both of parents smoked and with a few rules, it was permitted... Now I'm soon to be 66...

On September 2, 2018 I began vaping smnlaid down the cigarettes the very same day! I wasntw even looking to quit smoking, it turned out to be just that effective for me...

So wishing you a ton of well wishes in your journey with your story on vaping... Reading your text it was easy to see your motivation is 100 percent spot in...

Welcome David and I hope you enjoy your stay~!

My suggestion is to keep it simple. I started with an iStick TC40W and a Nautilus Mini which had an internal battery and room to expand. Don't get too crazy with your first MOD Kit because if you make the right choice you will still be using it years later like me. My iStick is my pocket-able Back Up carry MOD~! Good Luck

not to worry you are in the same boat we all were...it's just a big smorgsbord...grab yourself a plate pick something that looks good, if you don't like it put it on your wife's plate when she's not looking and go back and try something else, eventually you'll find something tasty. or if you see something on somebody's plate that looks good ask them if it's tasty.

David, I would add that you might want to consider getting two mods and tanks if it's afforable. Perhaps get just one at first and try to get the others asap. The third day I was vaping I dropped the mod and broke the glass on the tank. Thankfully, I had extras, but if I hadn't I probably would have just bought some cigarettes. Things break on their own at times, and gravity is a bitch on tanks and mods. Oh, always get a few more extra batteries, coils, cotton than you think you'll need.

It's very confusing at first, but you'll sort it out. There are tons of knowlegeable and experienced people here that are willing to help.

I can't agree more and there is nothing worse than the first drop of a MOD. I bought so many glass and stainless steel tanks for my Nautilus Minis it is ridiculous. The tanks that came with spares I never needed them~! Vape bands are a total necessity in my humble opinion....

Welcome David. Best of luck on your journey. Don't be shy asking questions.

Thanks all. I'm developing my shopping list as follows;
  1. MOD: Aspire SkyStar or Dynamo (touch screen and most recent mods from Aspire)
  2. Tank: Cleito 120 pro
  3. 2 18650 batteries
  4. charger
  5. extra coils (but perhaps I should get these locally to start a relationship with my vape store).
  6. I don't know if I need wicks for this tank.
  7. Organic e Juice
I'm planning on buying from Aspires website, into my local vape store based on price and what they stock. I really know nothing, so please let me know anything wrong about these choices. I think the tank is high power, but I can turn the mod to a low setting even if the tank is high power, correct? I understand, that getting started is the most important. I want to start before I finish my research.

Also, what am I forgetting to get?

Organic based ejuice is actually a really bad idea, because Mother Nature doesn't have an FDA. Flavors created in a lab have purposely left out the bad shit, so they're a much better choice. Also, organic flavors in your ejuice will gunk the SHIT out of your coils, due to tiny solids that remain in the flavor -- my shisha strawberry is a PRIME example. Organic is a good choice for eating/drinking, but a really bad choice for vaping. What you probably don't want in your ejuice are substances under the generic label of "diketones" -- though there is no actual proof that they're any kind of problem in vaping, and even in the infamous popcorn factory example, the potentially resulting disease -- bronchiolitis obliterans -- is vanishingly rare.

As for coils -- buy them for the cheapest price you can find, and that almost certainly won't be in a retail store. A "relationship" with any retail store is highly overrated, as sales employees have the job staying power of McD's employees. If you CAN find them locally, it's maybe a good thing, just in case you completely run out -- but for regular use, internet sales are bound to be much less costly.

As to organic, I'm considering two brands. I'm not planning on getting any flavor other than "tobacco flavor". You think that will gunk things up? I'm interested in avoiding ingestion of pesticides and GMOs whether by food or vape. Here are the organic brands I'm thinking of:

I'm also considering making my e juice with liquid nicotine and glycerine but no flavoring at first.

I'm still confused about the coils. I understand they are cheaper online. I'm not clear on how to find coils that fit the tank I plan on ordering. I called a few vape shops. Some were rude. I found one locally that spent some time with me on the phone. I can only expect if I'm there in person with a little cash, they will spend time with me.

Again thanks for all the tips.

Welcome David.....

Smart Fixx cig a likes (online order from their web site) are what I started with and helped get off cigs for the first two months. For me , going from cigs to a Cleito would have been too much of a difference as a 2pk a day smoker. The hand to mouth , draw and feel of the cig a likes are very close to the real thing. After many mods and tanks , I currently like mtl with my 2 Dicodes Dani Extreme V3's with clone Kabuki tanks (my original ones won't sit flush) and a YIHI Sx mini Q mini with a Cleito tank and .4 coil which I use for work. . The Kabuki tank takes Aspire 1.8 Nautilus coils.

I have a few Aspire Speeder mods which I don't use anymore as the high end mods heat up instant and I get much better flavor along with the same vape day in and day out.

All my juice purchases are from Vaping Watch TMaxx. Kinda like TJMaxx, if they don't have it I don't need it. Reviews from this forum on their juices are incredible along with pricing. I currently spend around $5 a week in juice and coils. A far cry from around $20 a day in cigarettes. I no longer have an interest in making coils or juice and have been smoke free since Christmas "17".

I have used the Kind Juice in my Cleito tanks and tried it in others. Even after steeping for months all I ever got was a grassy taste from all 5 flavors I ordered.. $50 went right down the drain.

All my coils are purchased from Eightvape.

I'd be wary of touch screens - especially as it's your first device. Lotsa of stuff can go wrong. Although Aspire is a good brand.

Interesting. I just received 5 samples from them yesterday. I left them open to aerate (as instructed) for about 24 hours I still haven't tried them yet.

Congrats on attempting to quit the cigs.

However I do think you may be diving in a little too head first for just starting out.

Have u considered a more simple starter device/kit..??

I would recommend the Uwell Nunchaku. It can be had for $46 from vapordna and has fantastic reviews.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find any tobacco that wasn't grown with pesticides, fungicides, etc -- it's tobacco, it's already poison! Honestly I can't think of any reason why GMOs would have anything to do with tobacco. Definitely avoid those things in food, but vaping isn't food, not even close, and the same standards just don't apply.

If you're interested in avoiding all the bad stuff, then definitely, unflavored is the way to go, and some folks do vape that way. Not sure why, but whatever floats their boat I guess. Vaping is AT LEAST 95% safer than smoking... and if I wasn't vaping, I'd definitely be smoking, so I'm having a hard time understanding this "purist" mentality -- why would a purist smoke in the first place? Getting free of cigarettes and staying free is a big chore in its own right, so trying to make it "perfect", well that seems a bit extreme. Get free of the cigarettes and stay that way, THEN you can worry about whatever it is you don't want in the vape. One thing you will probably find, after being free of smoking for a while, is that you won't want the taste of tobacco anywhere near you, it becomes so foul after you're off the butts for a while. That's not universal, some long-time vapers do enjoy tobacco-flavored vapes, but it's not very common at all.

As for shops, there really are all kinds -- some are just there to make a quick buck, some actually care about helping smokers get into vaping; I've experienced both here in NE metro Atlanta. The best way to find the coils you need is probably google, or here at the forum.

Also, what am I forgetting to get?

The Cleito 120 Pro takes mesh coils like these:

https://www.vapewild.com/aspire-cleito-120-pro-mesh-coils/

I just googled "Aspire Cleito 120 Pro Coils" and that was the first one that popped up.

Those coils screw inside the tank they have a wire mesh coil with cotton wrapped around it inside a metal case.

You use one for about a week (hopefully) each so you need at least one 5 pack to have on hand.

About once a month you will need to get a new 5 pack of coils.

Also you want to get two pairs of batteries (one pair in the mod while the other pair is on charge)

Trust me when I tell you that waiting for batteries to charge during cravings is no fun and doesn't work.

Here would be everything you need to get started and stay going for a while.:
  1. MOD: Aspire SkyStar or Dynamo (touch screen and most recent mods from Aspire)
  2. Tank: Cleito 120 pro
  3. 4 High Drain 18650 batteries (LG, Sony, Samsung, etc...) Good batteries are very important, avoid anything with "fire" in the name. i.e. "Trustfire"
  4. Good charger (Nitecore, Xtar, Efest, etc...)
  5. extra 5 pack of coils
  6. eliquid

I recently restarted with vaping and Ed up up with several mods that don’t get used. And some that were really pleasant to use and easy to maintain. For quality and brand goodness I would suggest you look at the Vaporesso brand. I quickly gained an interest in temp control and purchased a lost vape paranormal which was really great. A major step in the right direction. Up to 5 mods in less than two weeks. Vaporesso has a nifty ceramic stainless steel coil that vapes at lower temps and wattages. Having tried to find a tobacco flavor for my wife, I came across naked 100 with two flavors and Eurogold is pretty awesome. But you are on the right track. I went with an Espion Infinite mod but later purchased the Espion Solo which was much better for me. The DNA chip set mods are the cats pajams though and worth every penny.

Hugo mama,
  1. Well, like you point out it helps avoid issues with flavoring/s or bad stuff.
  2. It also costs a lot less & despite the misnomer of being unflavored if a person uses a high vg juice there's some sweetness naturally.
  3. We got no sense of smell and a limited sense of taste so pull this, "flavors? we don't need no stinkin' flavors!"
That isn't saying that I vape unflavored exclusively. Had some vanilla mixed in some base, until I realized it was just too much and causing nausea. hehe, displacement of water makes my boats float. :p :D :) Look, i can't even help myself. *chuckles*

I will throw another +1 onto this notion. I picked up a cheapo e-go style battery with a clearomizer in 2012. Just trying to save a few bucks. Now I had ahrd time completely kicking the smokes when my wife decided she didn't like the vape and went back to 'em. I smoke 5-6 a day until she got preggo in 2014 and quite for the pregnancy. Then I went for a year without a cig. When she picked them back up so did I for a couple of years. That is until I really started trying to figure out what worked for me. It takes some time and a little money. But vaping is an experience ... and everyone's experience is different. Once you find your preferred vape style you will also find yourself craving the vape over the smoke.

I went through a number of styles over the years - Ego/Clearmizer, Refilable Pod style Pen, VV Mod 0.5-0.8 ohm Sub-ohm Tank, VV/VW Mod with 0.2-0.4 sub-ohm tank, then RBA's,then 0.3-0.4 in RTA's, 0.1-0.3 in RDA's, and finally Unregulated. And to this day I still don't have 1 style that suits me on any given day. I have at least 4 set-ups available to me depending on my needs.

Good luck and I hope you have the patience to work your way into the lifestyle :D

If she was able to quit just because she was pregnant, good for her, and she didn't need vaping in order to quit. The best I could do when I was pregnant was to get it down to 3-4 cigarettes a day -- and compared to the 2pks a day I was smoking at the time, that was excellent! But I never ever could have quit, without vaping -- even the drastic reduction when pregnant was just because smoking made me nauseous -- I smoked those real long 120s, so I'd light one, take 3-4 hits, feel sick and put it out for later -- made one cigarette last for 4-5 lightings. :D

Yah she quite cold turkey for all 5 of the kids (yes 5 ) And went back to them after breast feeding was done. She can go 3-4 days without a smoke and not really even notice. I've been trying to get her to vape for years, cause she obviously doesn't NEED the nicotine. But she doesn't have the patience to work through it to find her style.

In the end she has no desire to quit ... and you have to want something to make it happen

Very true... and if vaping had been anyone's idea other than my own, I'm completely certain my response would have been a resounding and heartfelt "fuck you, jack!" :D But it was completely my own idea, and I didn't start it with any idea of quitting smoking, just of having some alternative to smoking on really cold nights when I really didn't wanna go outside. Then I discovered what an outstanding substitute it really is, and thought, "I wonder..." Turns out that I COULD quit, given a good substitute! :D And since I'd been wanting to be a non-smoker since roughly 1984, I thought I'd be a total fucking moron to pass up such an excellent opportunity.

I suspect she'll need to feel the damage from smoking, before she's really interested in quitting... and she might be willing to endure a lot of damage to reach that feeling -- most of us were.
