GeekVape Zeus Dual or OBS Engine II for flavor tank

expat42451

Looking for a flavor tank. Also like throat/lung hits. Read reviews about both tanks and having a difficult time deciding....I like the single coil option on the Zeus. From what I read the OBS requires more attention when building but from what I read I dont see that as much of a problem. . Also looking for quality build for a long life tank, not something to throw away after a couple of months. My current go to atomizers are a Cheeta II RDA and a Serpent Alto RTA. My Kylin is a paperweight because of a persistent leak. Any thoughts or opinions on which would be appreciated. The Zeus Dual and the OBS Engine II are easily available where I live in South America.

Regards & Thanks

Engine II was a disappointment for me. Got one in a trade and had it for less than a week and gave it away. The flavor and vapor just wasn’t as good as the original to me. Haven’t tried the Zeus but I’ve heard good things about it from people I know who have one.

Excellent and many thanks for the reply, Papachaz...... just the kind of info I am looking for.I have read a number of places that the Engine II is really finicky on coil placement, have to get them just right to get the flavor. Looks like a very different deck on the Engine, not like anything I have ever built before.

Again many thanks for the read and information

Regards.

The Zeus Dual RTA is nice. I love mine. Flavor is great! Airflow is the best for a top airflow I've seen. But! It's not fantastic with a single coil. Here's what I've been running in mine...the Mohawks are today's build.

Wow beautiful coils! Thanks very much for this and thanks for the great photos. I cant get Mohawks here in Ecuador so it will be either Clapton or Kanthal probably.

Again beautiful pics, great build and great info....many kind thanks! Looks like a quality tank.

To ship a pair of coils to where I live here in Ec would cost at a minimum of $100 shipping then they would be hung up in customs while TPTB tried to decide whether they were part of some subversive machine or a cyclotron. Its weird here on some things. We pay minimum of 150% duty on everything to do with vaping thats imported. There arent any decent CNC shops here to try to build tanks so, well its the luck of the draw.
Thanks for the offer though very much!

Tell me about it! Not only vaping stuff but all computer parts (or I would already have an AMD machine), cell phones, electronics, well. Sucks bad! If I could find a CNC shop here I would have already taken a crack at a tank build but no such thing I have found. Even liquid is hammered with duty so vaping is as much as cigarettes or more but Colombian cigs are $1. 50 a pack. So yeah tha gummint is really helping tha people out. I could just go on and on but I wont. Forgot to add this.... the government TAXES shipping. A letter pack to Colombia is about $20 via a major carrier. Same letter pack here pretty much makes $100 disappear.....

Thnx Vaperoxx.....

Will know when I build it and fire it off! Have a VooPoo drag supposed to be here in a couple weeks as well. Right now using a Uwell D2 on top of my Woody Vapes x200. I like the Genie chip! Best temp control I have ever used. Have not ever vaped a DNA though.

I like the gene chip better! And it's cheaper lol!

Yep seems to be less expensive. I had a Releaux Gen 3 that held up pretty good until the cheap plastic battery door finally would just barely latch and all 3 batteries would either hit the table or the floor at least provocation. I use it for a build stand now, the electronics still work but the door wont stay closed. It lasted for the better part of a year daily use and I charged the bats on the external charger so it would get opened a time or 2 daily for the change.....but temp control on it was a joke even with Arctic Fox. The Woody Vapes is a world away from the Releaux in build quality. Understand the VooPoo is as well so here's hoping.

I've had 4 Voppoo Drags and 2 Alpha 1s and a Mojo. Voopoo is great!

I used to wind coils larger than that, many years ago in my radio engineering days for transmitters, matching networks, amplifiers and so forth. The small stuff (to me) takes a lot more time to make it pretty. What I wound with larger stuff wasnt bad, most of it was hollow copper tubing......but using 26 ga around the shank of a screwdriver while you try to pin the end of it with a finger, keep tension, and get the turns spaced evenly..... well some of my stuff looks pretty nasty.

OK. Its here. Its already on its second build. New tank, yes? So it got washed and built with the supplied coils. The Woody Vapes would not stay in temp control mode, kept defaulting to wattage. Meh flavor. Did one tank then janked the supplied coils off washed everything again, and built 2 coils, 26ga 316 SS 10 turns each, a little lower to the deck than the original build. Wicked up with some bacon , wet everything down, put it back together. Better flavor. Stays in temp control mode now. New tank, new deck, going to play with it over the next few days with different types of liquid and a few different builds. Will try to figure out how to get a pic here. Got an image too large error. Next week or so will have a Drag as well hopefully.

OK finally some sort of image. Next build will take a shot of the deck built. I like it. Beautiful quality tank. time to play with the build.
Edit- Interesting looking at the Geek Vape site on the Zeus (curious since they have a video of building, how high do they set the coils) I noticed they advert Ni coils. Nothing else I found. Wonder if the coils included with this tank are Ni. That may be the reason it wouldnt stay in TC mode in SS.

The supplied coils are most likely kanthal or possibly nichrome - neither of which are tc coils. That's why it kicked you out of tc. Ni is nickel which IS a tc coil. (Just going by what I've been reading for the last 3 years)

I used to do that stuff too, back in the late 70s-early 80s. After electronics school I worked for an engineer who took care of 7 radio stations in a 3 county area where we lived. I wish sometimes I could do that again, especially now in the digital age. :)

Agreed. Wonder if you are an amateur radio operator. I havent been on the air since I have been in South America.
Thanks for the info on the coils. Back to SS and the tank is not bad at all. I have so far been through about 5 different builds so far and found one I am going to say with for a while.

Regards and thanks.

I started learning code and got so involved in the building/tuning aspect of it, I enrolled in electronics school and never finished the code course. :)

I'm really interested in the Zeus dual myself. I'll use ss coils from avs since I physically can't make my own.

Understand. As you know CW isnt necessary any longer, even on the Extra. I miss the hobby. Ecuador is too expensive with a ridiculous 175% duty to import equipment. As it is we pay double for any vaping supplies here. I am pretty sick of it.

I didn't know that. I haven't messed with it in years. I quit working for Archie in about 84 and moved to Miss. and haven't worked in that trade since. I used to piddle around fixing stereos and cb radios for truck drivers for a little while but only on a hobby basis. The extra costs you guys have to deal with hurts me in my heart. :( Sometimes I forget just how good we've got it here in the US.

Wow, those ARE beautful coils! Great macro shots!
So I was just searching the forum for advice on what is the best dual-coil top airflow RTA, & I found this post.
So if I want the best top airflow RTA on the market with dual coils, should I get the Zeus Dual RTA?
I like dripping, but lately I've been preferring squonking or a tank that I can put coils into without spending an arm & a leg. I'd rather make my own coils for pennies rather than spend like $4 for a prebuilt coil.
Any advice I would deeply appreciate! :)

For single coils, the iNtake is good but for duals, the Zeus Dual is still a performer.

I started hearing talk on the new Asmodus x VaperzMD Dawg RTA as well. I haven't tried it though but guys are saying it's pretty good.

I noticed Mike Vapes and TVP have both posted videos on it but I haven't watched either one yet. I'll try to check one of 'em out today. I need a good top airflow rta for my paranormal. I don't want juice to get into the board like it has on my G2.

I think the DNA250C has waterproof buttons.

Top airflow is the way to go if you don't want any juice leaking out onto the mods. It's a possibility to kill a board by having a leaky tank so it definitely raises some concern when using a bottom airflow tank. The Dead Rabbit RTA is also a top airflow RTA that could possibly be a good choice to add onto your list however I would first check out the Dead Rabbit RTA reviews in the reviews section or reddit first. I haven't used the Dead Rabbit RTA so I can't comment on its performance.

EDIT: The QP Designs Juggerknot Mini is worth a look at as well. It's probably double the price though. Personally, I'm not too sure about it because Mike Vape's Reviewed it and a few days later he did a Live Stream and someone asked "Which is his favourite single coil RTA and he mentioned the iNtake RTA". To me this means that the iNtake is a better performer so at that price point, I'll give the Juggerknot mini a skip.

I've heard the machining on the Dead Rabbit RTA is atrocious. Not positive if that's true, but that's what I've heard, at least.

Yeah, I've been looking at both the intake and the Dead Rabbit. From what I've been able to gather, the Intake's airflow is a little tighter than I like, but not necessarily a deal-breaker. I watched Tony B's video of the Dead Rabbit and according to him, coil placement is finicky getting them in just the right spot. After all the videos on youtube, plus reviews from people I trust here on VU, I believe the Zeus Dual is gonna be my next purchase. I love the postless deck, and having enough airflow to be able to close it off to fine tune it is important to me. Anything tighter than the Reload rta is really too tight for me to be happy with.

Nice choice. The Zeus Dual does have a lot more airflow than the iNtake RTA. You will enjoy the Zeus Dual for sure. Just wick it with little cotton and you'll love it.

Here is my take on the Zeus Dual VS the OBS Engine: https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/threads/geekvape-zeus-dual-vs-obs-engine-review.873309/

I used the Engine for a very long time but now I use the Zeus Dual instead. I love my Zeus Dual paired with my Aegis Legend. Thats a setup I rock everyday because its Leak-Proof and the Legend can handle a beating.

Feels like quality as well. It doesn't feel like a cheaply made device. I'm really impressed by this mod and I would rate this as 1 of my favourite mods of 2018.

I feel exactly the same. It feels so solid & high quality. This & the Innokin Proton are my favorites of 2018 for certain. Unless something comes out by December, these two would get my vote.

That looks really good. I have the full black but that rainbow really makes it stand out I've seen that Geekvape announced an Aegis Mini. It has built-in battery but it seems interesting. I think I might just get one to use with my MTL RTA's and high nic. At 20w I'm sure that battery will get me through a days usage.

Zeus dual and the Aegis are beautiful.....nice setup!

Had my Zeus dual for a couple of weeks. Firing it with either a Woody Vapes X200 or a Drag. I probably have done 20 builds on it trying to find the flavor "sweet spot" and have been unable to at this point. Zeus dual is a sweet tank but I find the flavor muted compared to some of my other RDA's or RTA's particularly when an e liquid has subtle flavors. I think I am still not building it the best it could be. Have used 3 different types of SS wire, 2 different types of cotton. Best I have come up with so far is what it has now, 2 coils, 10 turns 24 Ga 316 SS. Wicked with Cotton Bacon. I can just barely see the bottom of the coils through the air ports on the deck. Any suggestions deeply appreciated. I live in Ecuador so am very limited as far as what I can get wire wise.

Regards & Thanks

I would suggest trying out Ni80 or Kanthal wire. I know some people love SS wire but whenever I use SS I can feel like there's something missing flavor wise.

Since you're in Ecuador, I would assume getting your hands on coils like Aliens, Framed Staples etc would be very difficult or very expensive so I would suggest getting Ni80 instead. If you can't get your hands on Ni80, I would suggest playing around with different coil heights. A 10 wrap dual on a 2.5 or 3mm should be pretty good. Position the coils in such a way that 25% should be visible if you're looking from the airflow side. (at least 25% of the bottom of the coil should be visible).

Another key thing to note is that wicking needs to be 100% when using top airflow tanks in general because incorrect wicking will almost always lead to a bland and muted taste. As a test to see if your wicking is good, take a long drag and thereafter hear if the tank makes a sort of scorching/burning noise. Usually a slight/soft noise is fine but if it does sound a touch loud, it could indicate that the tank isn't wicking fast enough, resulting in a dry/bland taste.

Please let us know is you come right.
