When do you change your coils? (I use AVS)

I seem to be getting less flavor after a month or so in my Drop RDA with AVS Triple Core Fused Claptons, 6 or 7 wraps, 30g/38g.

Is this normal? I change the cotton every 5-7 days and dry burn/strum the coils clean.

Thanks

All depends on how you Vape and juice, there's no standard

Yeah, I figured.

Wismec RX GEN3, 86W.

Maybe 30ml a week. 70/30. (Sweet though, so I assume the coils will get dirty quicker)

This was a month ago, after I cleaned the old ones.

I use avs wire and depending on usage I’ll get anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

For instance. Should I change the cotton out and clean coils? What would you all do?

If the flavor was bad like burnt yes, if not no.

Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk

Nope, still good, considering I changed it August 20th. I only use at from 5pm-bed. The Redemption / Cylon gets used the rest of the day (work etc ).

Typically I'm lucky to get a couple weeks out of my coils. But I vape TONs and typically do super sweet juices. Have to clean and rewick at least every 2-3 days.

I buy the standard Clapton’s (can’t remember the specs but nothing fancy) 10 packs two at a time and usually change them every two weeks, whether they need it or not. I use them one at a time so 20 coils last me quite a while.

Now that I have the Rage squonk, I realized I barely use 7ml a day. But I don’t use that one all day. I’d say I use that one half of the day. But the coils in that Drop have been in there for at least a month. Maybe 6 weeks.

“The idea is to get to a place where you can put your vaping equipment down and not inhale anything but air.”

I have to keep reminding myself of that. “Vaping” is not meant to be a “normal” part of life. It is meant to help jerks like me get off tobacco products.

If the Vaping industry just wants to create a whole new level of dependency, they are succeeding. I choose to believe that that is not their intent.

Imagine not having to worry about when your coils need changing, because you don’t Vape anymore?! I remind myself of that, every day.
Am I thankful for Vaping getting me away from tobacco? You bet!! But not to become just an addict in another arena.

Sorry. I realize that my philosophical banter is above and beyond the topic here, but I guess I needed to vent (lol).

I’ll go back to my corner and shut up now.

I 100% believe that you are correct. Vaping was created by smokers for smokers trying to quit. And for those who are successful, I am happy for them. But for many of us, well vaping/modding/building is the addiction we choose over FAR worse things. If you take a good hard look around the community you will find a chunk of us are recovered/recovering addicts of many descriptions. For many of us, we have no intent on quitting vaping as we know good and well it keeps a good hold on our addictive personalities and helps us control urges far beyond smoking.
Yes, in the end, we are trading 1 addiction for another. I, personally, am trading quite a number of addictions for just 1. And I, for one, am comfortable saying that vaping for the rest of my life is a major improvement.

I vape DIY @ about 25 to 30 mil a day and just changed my coils for the first time in my Bonza rta so that’s just over 6 months for the set. I clean them 2 to 3 times a week and they just last.... nothing special.

DIY? Like homemade juice ?

Yeah I don’t change the cotton as much as I should but I don’t go through that much juice daily. I want to say , in my Drop, maybe 8ml. But it’s sweet and nic level is about 6-8mg.

Yes so most likely not as sweet as commercial juice. I just burn and scub the coils under water with an old toothbrush.... nothing special.

Scrub them underwater? Do you dip the deck in water just enough to touch coils then dry fire ?

I just dry burn, low wattage , and then strum with tweezers.

I just dry fire to a low glow and put them into water running out of the faucet, heat and repeat. Then take the tank off the mod and scrub the coils under warm running water with the toothbrush till the coils are clean.

Not saying my way is any better.... heck yours in the picture look great!

Ok so here’s a good example of what I’m talking about. The coils look like they’re getting thrashed on my Drop, but the cotton isn’t even brown, let alone black.

What do y’all do if this was yours ?

Probably a juice issue. Sweet juices tend to gunk up faster. I know some of my juices cause me to clean every couple of days. I also know that any tightly fused superfine wire can be problematic. If it's tight enough it can cause wicking issues.

Keep vaping it, if the flavor is good. I don't see anything wrong with the coils from here.

Yeah, they look 50% gunky but perform pretty damn well.

Thanks. I'll probably clean it when I get time/patience.

It is a sweet juice, 6-8mg nic.

I've tried an assortment of different wire. Lightning Vapes, AVS, Kbee Vapes, Kidney Puncher, etc. And out of all those I like Lighting Vapes Ni80 and AVS SS316. Just ordered more wire from AVS today. I tried going back to kanthal and YUCK. I love the ramp of stainless. HOT. I prefer mech mods and DIY juice and wrapping my own coils. Semi-hobbiest I guess. I say "I guess" because I don't build my own wire yet, i.e. clapton and alien wire. I have an AWS digital scale and a good ultrasonic cleaner. As far as changing my setup I just look at my cotton and coils periodically and pay attention to the flavor, vapor production vs length of draw, the heat of the draw because I like a hot vape, and decide based on a culmination of all those things if I need to clean and rewick or go ahead and replace the coils. I pay a great deal of attention to the wicking. Too tight or too loose are both bad and I can tell pretty quickly either way. It's been my experience that if the wicking is done right the build lasts a lot longer. Of course if you're vaping cane syrup? Well...

Had some time today during torrential downpours to clean and rewick. Next time I’ll replace the coils.

I like the way you think and I agree 100%! :) I smoked cigarettes for 46 years and switched to vaping. Yes, I swapped one addiction for another and I'm ok with that. I vape 25-30 mls a day and as long as I can get my hands on juice I'll continue to vape. I haven't fully embraced the hobby aspect of vaping beyond collecting a few good quality mods and rebuildables. I physically can't make coils so I have to buy em already made. My hobbyist experience is limited to making all my own juice.

nearly ditto,, vape 30mls a day,, change coil and wick on Sundays.... but my coils are simple wraps to .35+/ ohms @ 28w,,, on Kanthal A1 ,,,,not those fancy/detailed wraps/coils

I live on the Alabama coast. I root for Bama all the way but as long as an SEC team is gettin' it done I'm happy. I have family in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Virginia, Illinois, and Alaska. If you know where Wade is, one of my sisters lives there.

I don't live that far from you. I live about 25 miles south of Hattiesburg, in Lumberton. I'm originally from TN. I'm actually a "Big Orange" fan, but we rarely get their games here, so I watch a lot of Southern games. :)

I think I need to change my Drop coils. It’s been over a month and one of them is getting Annihilated and the other isn’t so bad.

Those coils don't look bad at all in my humble opinion. I would clean and rewick them 1st.

I have a set of M.Terks N80 Alien coils in a Zeus RTA that I have been using for about 3 months now. I went about 6 weeks before cleaning and rewicking just last week.

If after cleaning and wicking the flavor is gone, then change the coils.

My Cleaning process.

1. Put Deck on to coil master.
2. Get very warm water running in the sink. A small stream, not dripping, not gushing.
3. Warm up coils. (Will smoke a lot, not to worry cooking off juice.)
4. Once coils reach a low orange color rinse coils off. (depending on how gunked up the coils are you may not get a real good glow the 1st or second time. Just watch the coils and do not glow them Red Hot! The Repeat this step once, maybe at most twice more before you can get them to glow light orange.
5. Once coils are looking better and not burning off residual vape juice, glow them light orange, not red hot.
6. Rinse off under water.
7. Brush lightly with a brass brush
8. Repeat step 5 - 7 2 to 3 times. You can do it more times if you wish but if you do do not brush any more than you have to
9. After final rinse, glow the coils light orange. Not Red Hot. You're just heating them up so they can dry a little.
10. Allow to cool a bit. Walking from kitchen or bathroom to work area should be enough

After that using the coilmaster, just as if they are brand new coils, I verify both coils are heating up from the inside/out, that there are no hot spots. May have to strum and/or squeeze the coils to get them heating evenly.

Then I allow to cool, rewick and off I go.

I want to add to my previous post.

You are only rinsing the coils. Do not put a Mod or any device you use to heat up the coils in the water. Just stick the hot coils in the stream.

Have a paper towel handy to wipe up any water that may get on the mod or your firing device. You are not touching the coils with anything other than the brass brush

Heat up the coils slowly by pulsing them.

By heating up the coils slowly you are turning the gunk on them to ash so it can be rinsed and brushed away.

Remember I said lightly brush them with a brass brush. You can get the brushes at home depot or some other place. They look like brass bristle toothbrushes.

Do not use steel or any hard bristled brush as you will ruin the coils

I know this thread is a month old, but if these coils are annihilated then you are way more meticulous then I. Hell the still look new.

It would seem that they may not be heating evenly as the one on the left is substantially more gunky than the one on the right.

I do my gym owners (Detroit) computer stuff and now vape stuff in exchange for gym time. (He was vaping long before me)

He has an X-Priv which of course came with the Prince tank. I talked him into getting the RBA deck for the tank and I would do the building and wicking to save him some money.

He has had the same KA1 fused claptons in there for 5 or 6 months. Every couple weeks I clean it out, burning and rinsing the coils, washing out the base and chamber etc, and rewick it. They look brand new each time and still vape fine.

.25 dual build that he runs at 50 watts so that probably helps even though he likes this caramel donut juice from a local shop here which doesn't. They DO look ready when I go to change the cotton though. :)

Next time I'll get pic for the OP poster so he can see what a very used build looks like. :D

Doesn’t look like your coils are positioned to get proper air flow around them. That won’t help the gunk time.

yeah I rarely use my Desire Rage + my 2nd Drop, it just doesn't hit like a non-squonk mod. My DROP + RX Gen 3 is my go-to when I'm home. When I go to work or out anywhere, Cylon 218w + Redemption RDA.
