Warning about particular flavors and how to find a substitute.

Hello everyone.

There might be a similar topic to this which I didn't find. Please sorry for my ignorance.

That is a great one and worth to study it. http://vapingunderground.com/threads/know-your-enchancers.160850/

Now: I like to surf trough the recipes at http://e-liquid-recipes.com and order flavors based of recipes I want to mix. As you all know...some of the listed flavors contains a warning. Since I'm new into mixing, I have a lot to read about which substances might be not good to inhale..

My question is: If I want avoid those flavors with a warning, what would be the most efficient way to find a substitute? More often than not, there are same flavors by other brands which doesn't got a red flag. I guess, some flavors are interchangeable while others results in a different taste.

May be some of you can provide some tips and tricks or rule of thumbs to keep as close as possible to the original recipe and at the same time use only "safe" ingredients.

Since I stopped to smoke and only vaping I would like to reduce any potential health risks regarding to vaping. First lessons was about battery safety which affects regulated mod users as well imo :)

Thank you very much.

Everything has a warning. Including batteries. "Harm Reduction"

I'm at the point where, if I get stymied and PO'd, I'd buy food-service products and go that route. Why? Because nothing I do will ever be as bad as exhaust-fumes in an intersection or tobacco - and I really MISS good pipe tobacco.

I was like you when I first started mixing, and I strictly avoided anything with "caution" labels. I got "Version 2" of everything that was available in a Version 2, and if there wasn't a Version 2, I did without. For a while, I was happy, but one day I decided to just try a Version 1. It was Capella's Vanilla Custard. The V2 was OK, but the V1 was in a different dimension, flavor wise. I threw caution to the wind, and ordered a 4-oz. bottle of Vanilla Custard V1, and I use it in a lot of my recipes. I had no ill effects from it, and when I stopped to think about how I had battered my lungs with over 40 years of inhaling the smoke from two packs of cigarettes every day all those years... I had to laugh at my silliness. There's FAR more of all those "bad" ingredients in a cigarette as there is in a flavoring, and I was inhaling those cigarettes non-stop my entire adult life. My last two purchases of Vanilla Custard were pints. I also use the original version of all the other flavors I used to get the "safe" version of, and my juices TASTE BETTER. That's why I vape, and it keeps me from even thinking about smoking. And now, after a year of using all those "unsafe" flavors, I feel no different than when I was avoiding them. Actually, I think I feel better, because I have another year of not-smoking under my belt.

My point is, don't let those caution labels ruin your life. Vaping is better than smoking, so do whatever you have to do to keep yourself interested in vaping, and NOT smoking. If it makes you feel better to avoid certain ingredients, look for that flavor in a V2 version, or look for the same flavor by a different manufacturer. There will be slight differences between manufacturers, but they should be relatively close. My biggest tip to you: READ REVIEWS. Get other people's opinions. It will help you make a decision as to whether you might like it, too.

Good suggestions above. I would only avoid flavors that have water added, for no other reason that water makes the flavor less tasty and produces a thinner liquid that vapes worse and causes leaks.

I have been vaping V1 flavorings a lot for 3+ years now and no popcorn lung or any other ill effects noted. My main vapes main ingredient is CAP VC V1.

There have been NO popcorn lung cases associated with vaping and virtually no popcorn lung cases period. Popcorn lung seems to require massive amounts of diacetyl to happen.

Tried the V2 flavorings and they taste a bit like bile to me.

Had a full physical this spring and doctor said my lungs were great fo a 64 yr old guy.
I told him that I had smoked for 40+ years and switched to vaping 3 years ago and he had trouble believing that I had smoked for 40+ years.

My opinion is that vaping is FAR safer then smoking but not safer than not vaping.

I think vaping causes my feet to stink though.

Keep in mind some people who use V1 or flavors with warnings, you might not even taste the flavor at that percentage.

Bull City does a pretty good job at listing baddie content if the information is out there, so as a rule of thumb I usually cross reference their listing on something first and even if I'm buying it from somewhere else (hence why i usually just buy there if I'm not also after Nic/VG). I also just simply assume anything non-fruit coming out of company like say Inawera, who last I knew refused to list baddie information, contains it.

Generally speaking, I haven't really had any issues finding decent subs to mix, even if sometimes I have to find something that's not as easy to recognize as a straight forward v2. Plus there is just sooo much more variety out there now and compared to when I first started, and which has made it a lot easier. As for what other people have stated here...to each their own. Personally, the general "it's still better then smoking" mindset just isn't for me. If there is grounded evidence suggesting I might be better off avoiding such things in favor of using other things, the overall difference in my end game mixing isn't enough for me to just dismiss that away. Better safe then sorry on something that it's still way to early to know for sure and such.

Then again I'm also not much of a custard guy to begin with, and I happen to like Cap's v2 for when I do need it ;)

TPA/TFA also is excellent for including ALL the ingredients of ALL their flavors, on their website.. which is why i still use a lot of TFA flavors. I do generally try to avoid the diketones, just 'cuz I have asthma and I tend to be a bit hypochondriac -- avoiding them mainly for peace of mind rather than any actual presumption of risk. But I'm not completely anal about it -- if i can't get a full list of all the ingredients in a flavor I really love... I don't lose any sleep over it.

And i totally agree about getting opinions from the peanut gallery; it's not always completely on-target, but hearing a lot of comments for a given flavor at least gives you something to work with, at the start -- you may end up disagreeing, but it's all part of the process of learning a whole new thang. :D

And yes, Bull City Flavor is totally righteous.

Yeah, I'm not completely anal about it either. Really I just haven't found too many baddie flavors, outside custard juices of course, where a potential sub was that make or break in my enjoyment of a recipe. Heck, half my DIY spin off gems over the years came directly from me tinkering around for one.

I still like and use my Inawera creme brulee quite a bit though, and while they don't list it....I just know ;)

An Inawera flavor, shisha strawberry, is the one I use, and LOVE, and have no idea what all is in it... and don't care. :D

As for custard... if you want one that tastes good and doesn't have diketones... combine TFA's Vanilla Swirl and DX Bavarian Cream, add some CAP Sweet Cream, and maybe some sweetener to taste... there's your diketone-free custard. Go easy on the DX Bavarian, because it's one of those with butyric acic, and if you go over 6% of the DX Bavarian in any recipe, you do get that "stomach acid" sort of nastyness. I'd suggest about 5% of each of the TFA flavors, about 2% of the sweet cream. Adjust the proportions of the TFA flavors based on whether you want more vanilla -- the Vanilla Swirl -- or more custard -- the DX Bavarian. The Sweet Cream just adds more authentic creaminess without additional sweetness, but be careful with it too, or it ends up tasting like "crayon." :giggle:

Yep but I cannot use that flavoring.
Tried it an piffed out the rest to someone.
different tastes and body chemistry.

Vaping is much less universally tolerated by humans than smoking due to all the variety of ingredients in the ejuice.
But as I said before one can usually find a vaping style and juice that works for them if they work at it.

And also because of all the shit that BT puts into commercial cigarette "tobacco" to fool human bodies into thinking "this ain't so bad" so those bodies go on smoking for decades until Mr Cancer comes knocking. We don't have that fool-the-body shit in our ejuice, so if something bothers you, you know it pretty quickly -- a good thing! :)

Can't disagree with that.
My point is that switching to vaping is not a smooth transition for everyone.
And without a bit of work will not work for some at all.

Vaping is lots more 'work' than smoking and some are just not to be bothered with the hassle as well.

BUT! Vaping is worth it if you can use it to get off of smoking.

I agree that it's totally worth it. People who say stupid shit like "vaping is HAAAAAAAARD" make me want to slap them. Dying of lung cancer looked pretty hard to me, when I watched my dad do it. Vaping is NOT that hard, it just takes some effort. I know, the millenials find that an alien concept, used as they are to winning a trophy just for showing up.

That's almost exactly my same situation. 65 years old, smoked for 46 years. All my doctors are happy with my chest exams. Lets's don't talk about cholesterol and triglycerides though. :)

My triglycerides and cholesterol are ok on the border line but not high.

I don’t vape custards with diketones. Menthol is bad Mmkay. And any cinnamon is not good for you. cinnamaldehyde!!! Apart from that... Go nuts!!! or Go bananas or strawberry or vanilla or blueberry....we could be here all day:)
