Sore throat from 70/30 VG/PG??????

I've convinced my friend to move away from cigarettes and go to vaping. It's been a week now and he's thinking of going back to cigarettes. I started him on 70/30 Vg/PG and for some reason he's getting sore throats. Can even such a small amount of pg cause it? Should I tell him to go full vg? Will full vg have any flavor? I guess should he go max vg or the other direction?

Depends on wether or not PG is the problem - some are also very sensitive to VG

Also,. there is a dastardly flu going around causing sore throats among other symptoms

Is it juice you made or bought? What's the nic level?

Are there any signs or symptoms that I can watch for that could point in the direction of the real reason for the throat pain?

I've given him Naked 100 Haiwaiian PPG and he also bought UniLoop. All the same issue

He should go to the doctor and get a strep test instead of trying to get a third hand medical diagnosis from a vaping forum.

Quitting smoking can make you sick. Cigarettes have a lot of hooks to keep you addicted, not just nicotind for sure. But yeah if his sore throat doesn't go away, see a doctor.

I get a little sore throat from a couple of flavorings, and a Big sore throat from any wire with nickel in it. Some other people do too. That includes nichrome and SS. My bet is it's the coil type, but I'm not betting any real money or anything.

He's using clapton

If you can nail down whether it's a kanthal clapton, nichrome clapton, or SS clapton, that would help. Could put in a kanthal clapton for him and then see if his sore throat gets better in a day or so

- Kanthal doesnt change colors, nichrome and SS will turn blue, hope that helps

I've searched endlessly and can't find information. Something interesting I also saw is that a vaporesso gtm coil said stainless steel on the box but on some online shops they mentioned kanthal

So just because it says Clapton doesn't mean it's kanthal?

Clapton just means small wire wrapped around a larger one - does not refer to composition of the wire at all

Given the epidemic proportions of the current flu, he needs to be at the doc ASAP. My husband still has his tonsils, and he said he had a wicked sore throat at the onset of the flu. My tonsils were removed decades ago, so I didn't, but this flu is NO FUCKING JOKE, it's killing people! He needs a doctor far more than he needs ANYTHING vape-related.

Could be anything from actually being sick (flu, cold), too being sensitive to VG or/and pg, could be the flavor profile itself, switching from smoking to vaping can cause it as well, depending how he vapers.

I personally get it too after half a tank of naked Hawaiian ppog or green blast, but mine is based on pg sensitivity and not just naked but 70/30 in general. Switching to 80/20 was fine for me, as well as avoiding citrus/tropical blends at the beginning till my body adjusted to the switch. Now I can vape these flavors just not that ratio lol.

It's definitely not a flu issue. It has something to do with PG/VG. Like I said, he's on 70VG 30PG. I didn't think it would cause an issue. He had Uniloops which is 80/20 if I'm not mistaken. So I'm thinking its a VG thing. Do you recommend any 50/50 blends I can give to him?

Simply put - I recommend he pause on the vaping and see if it gets better and just because it isn't the flu doesn't mean it isn't an onset of a cold. Once that can be ruled out you guys will need to experiment and figure out what works best. Process of elimination. A lot of variables at play, not just PG / VG or coil type, but nicotine strength and quality, flavorings used in the e-juice, cotton and how much, yada yada.

FWIW if I vape citrus heavy juices for a while my throat gets a little worn out. But that's just me. When I first started vaping my lungs were toast and my body was like what in the actual F*** are you doing to me. So there are some initial side effects off getting of analogs for sure.

But please have him take a pause for a day and make sure it isn't related to illness!

Since he is a new vaper I have a feeling he is using a flamed out coil that should have been changed already. In my experience I have found that to be the cause for new vapers who are still used to the smoke from cigarettes. Good Luck

Could be the PG, could be the Nic level, could be less than ideal airflow which makes the vape harsher than need be. What's he vaping on anyway?
Or it could just be a symptom of quitting smoking, so not even vaping related. I had a sore throat too, among other issues: insomnia, constipation, serious coughs, tightness in chest. I put them all down as common smoking cessation symptoms. They all went away after two weeks, give or take a few days. Personally, I would never bother a doctor as others suggested, if a bit of a sore throat is the only symptom. If he can bear it for another week, maybe with a different juice, give that a go.

(Of course, I'm not giving medical advice other than going back to smoking is a stupid idea.)

It could be any number of things with this. So you'll need to approach it systematically. The first thing to determine, is it the vape or not. Knock off the vape for a day or two and see if his sore throat improves. If not, a doctor visit is in order, if it does then you can start eliminating items in respect to the vaping. First thing to do is change the coil. A burnt out coil will likely be sending burnt cotton residue along with the vapor. Not that pleasant and can cause sore throat. Next would be the flavor. Citrus based flavors can be mildly acidic and affect the throat. I personally can't vape citrus based flavors for that reason. Try a candy based flavor like gummi bear, or a non-acidic fruit flavor like black cherry. Those can actually be calming for a sore throat. Next would be vg or pg sensitivity. This will take longer because you have to experiment with different vg/pg levels. One other thing that can have and effect is wattage. Higher wattage tends to give a stronger throat hit. When I first started I found 28 to 30 watts was plenty. I'm now running between 40 and 55 watts. So you've got a lot to think about and check out. Good luck, and I hope you can get is sorted out.

Usually if the VG is a problem -- which it can be for some of us, though we're in the minority -- it doesn't cause a sore throat, but an inability to breathe -- sore throats are usually caused by PG, in those who are sensitive to it. It's possible your friend needs max or 100% VG, since even a little PG seriously irritates some people.

Or, as mentioned, it could be a case of not recognizing that maintenance needs to be done -- fresh coil, fresh wick, dumping browned juice and using fresh, that sort of thing, or maybe he's using wayyyyyyyyy too much wattage -- most new vapers DON'T need 50+ watts! I'd say keep the wattage under 20w until he really knows what he's doing with vaping.

The thing is... for all that vaping is a great substitute for smoking, and looks kinda like smoking, and often feels kinda like smoking... it's NOT smoking. As smokers, our flesh was accustomed to a certain type of abuse, and we could take it all day and twice on sunday. Vaping takes a little time to get used to; very few of us could just jump right in and start chasing clouds right off the bat.
