Anyone else get a bad taste from Stainless steel coils?

Bought some premades from AVS. 28gx2/40g 3mm 7 wraps. Put them in an rda and rdta and I'm getting more flavor from the coil than I am my juice.

I wouldn't call it bad, exactly, but all I can taste from stainless steel coils is the cotton wick. No ejuice flavor at all.

Andria

ETA: did you give them a pulsed dry-burn after you mounted them? Might be some machine oil on them.

Now that you mention it, it does taste like cotton. And yes I dry burned them to make sure they fire evenly

Funnily, I had given up hope on my OBS Frostwyrm as being tasteless and, therefore, useless. I'd tried several different coils and different wicking styles and cotton. Then I tried the new coils in it and WOW, what a difference! It's become my favorite now.

I've been using SS316L from AVS and haven't had any weirdness. My favorite prebuilt coils I've tried so far actually. I did try using the cotton that came with those coils though and it killed my vape experience. The cotton didn't even stay for a day. After about 3 hours I swapped the cotton out for some Cotton Bacon v2 and the vape was MUCH better.

Yeah I threw away the cotton that came with them. Didn't even try it.

LOL be happy you did. I could taste the cotton more, my juice less, and it just wasnt wicking as good as CB does. I even used the scottish roll technique, something I don't always do with CB though it does make for a better wick imo, and still, it was just, off.

That's pretty much what I'm getting now. Gonna build my 3rd atty today and see what happens

Soak the cotton in juice for a bit (10min) before you fire it up. And also dry puls your coils.. If that don't work.. Then it's the wire.. Try it and see

The only think I did differently was pulse the coils at lower wattage before I wicked them. Can you burn stainless if you pulse at too high of wattage?

Yes, you need to start pulsing at only 10 watts and gradually work up a little.

Also, stainless cannot take the big time, hard core pulsing kanthal requires

Well that's what ruined them then. Makes sense especially being such tiny wire. I wonder if you could melt them at 40g.

Thank you Lucy

I get bad taste from kanthal

I have the same problem with kanthal.
Plus I get a taste as it degrades over time.

I use cotton bacon and 316l stainless on all of my devices.

I tried nichrome before but it was worse than kanthal probably because of the nickel (the "NI" in nichrome)
Plus the coil legs popped on me a bunch of times and it became a pain in the ass.

Been using Lightning Vapes SS316L for over a year and no taste issues at all.
I only use self rolled round wire coils though.
If I was making a claptonized thing I would clean the wire with solvent or fire first.
As it is I just pulse mine a few times but they do not have all the nooks and crannies to trap stuff in like a Gargoyle Hoof coil.

you were using 40g?
They probably fused together causing the bad taste.

Yeah, I have not ever experimented with Nichrome because of hearing about these kinds of issues

I wonder if LV will be getting any more 25 GA SS316L after their fire?
So far they just seen to have even gauges.
I like 25.

I'm surprised they did not include a flyer with their pulsing guide for stainless

That is the only reason I knew and didn't blow it when I first tried SS

Everyone's diff....
I'm fine with kanthal.
Fine with Nichrome.
Hated the first SS I tried, I think from china, but then I got different SS, and it was fine - I've taken Lucy's advice now (wanting some actual coils in addition to wire) and tried AVS, and so far, so good!

I think it did come with info about slow dry-burning, but I dry burn on a mech so I can't set it for 10 watts. Just did mini-pulses very slowly getting to a bit of a glow...

That's how I clean mine when I rewick

When new (which is rare because they are so long lasting it doesn't happen often ) I go ahead and pop them on a regulated mod just to be on the safe side

I just let it rip when cleaning old ones on a mech:giggle:

25ga is a great wire.
24ga is a little too thick and the ohms end up a little too low and the 26ga is a little too thin.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I only had to ruin a few pairs. I'm really liking TC though. First time using it.

The ones I use are 26x2 / 36ga
3mm 7wrap on RTAs and 8 wraps on RDAs.

How many watts / volts were you running them at?

Just ordered a 250 ft roll from them.

AVS has detailed tutorial on website telling you how to install and ramp coils for even glow. They also show you how to on their youtube channel. I have been using them for close to a year and never had a taste from coil. The Kendo Gold they send with coils is actually pretty good, just not worth extra $ IMO.

I'm a "tweener" with Kanthal.
All my single-coil RDAs (Hadaly, O-atty, Gorge, etc) I'm building with SS, or now starting to try some prefab claptons and such.
But I still like simple duals (for Stumpy, Goon, Nuppin, etc), and to hit my mark, I need 27 gauge Kanthal.
Fortunately, that's pretty available.
But I did find myself looking for an "odd gauge" SS and couldn't find it. Might have been 25, I don't recall...

So the coils worked great last night. I had amazing flavor. Now this morning it tasted bad again through the first tank. On the second tank full, the flavor is starting to come back. At least I think it is. I don't get it.

How low do you let juice get before filling? My tanks seldom get below half full. Vape too warm and sweet if I let get low.

Could be a case of vaper's tongue. Are you drinking sufficient liquids. I've noticed when I don't, NONE of my juice tastes like much, from any of my devices.

@SirRichardRear do you think this could be the issue? I believe you've used the drag in TC mode. Did you have any issues? Maybe there's something I missed in the initial set up?

I get no taste from SS or Kanthal if I don't dry burn it. If I dry burn it, even pulsing, I do. I never dry burn anymore the pure taste of a vape on a new coil when I rewick is worth it.

You don't worry about your coils firing evenly? Do you just get new coils when they get gunked up?

he said he's vaping 580 F so burning is possible for sure. way too high. also don't know what mod he is using. some suck at TC. also could be a hot spot as well. I sue AVS wire all the time in TC and no issues on the right device and no taste
