Coil tools worth it?

Hi all! I am new to building. I am using micro screwdrivers for different ID. Also using small needle nose pliers and flush cut snips. I can't of course pulse and tweak with the lack of ceramic tweezers. Besides ceramic tweezers...... I see a lot of tools on the market out there for making coils. Are any of these must haves for building?

A coil jig really helps - you don't have to keep going online to see what size drill bit or nail to use to hit your target inner diameter.

Small sharp scissors - like what come in manicure sets - are also super handy.

Sigh.............

Lot's of stuff to purchase.

I still use a simple freaking nail and it works out GREAT!

I used a drill bit and nail clippers for a long, long time. Broke down and bought a cheap jig from FT and it was worth the $2

I don't think ceramic tweezers are necessary but it can help with stubborn coils or a bad winding job. I pretty much only strum the coils to even them out now.
The best jig IMO:

$2 from FT free shipping. Then just get some wire clips or use a nail clipper if want. Flush cuts from a wire cutter can make things simple for tight builds where nail clippers won't fit.

I use the coil master v2 kit and I am loving it, very helpful and quite cheap for everything. It's better then guessing or running around for sizes.

I just ordered one of these before seeing the post. Seems like a great simple all in one tool. $3

I finally got a coilmaster V3 coiling set. Under $8 at Fastech. I think it was well worth the money and I am a tight bastard.

I bought the coilmaster v3 full kit, and I'm more than impressed. It's well thought out and executed. I built a coil, did all the tuning and shit, wicked it and vaped it straight away. Good stuff.

Well, buy a book, so you can figure out what to do with the 100+ flavors.....
No author understands my peculiar taste buds.
Cannot tolerate artificial sweeteners nor contents of many flavors.
Causes bad mouth and throat irritations.
so far I have wound up tossing over 1/2 of the flavorings I have tried.
Wish they listed ingredients so I could figure what to buy and not to buy.

I did start keeping them oin the fridge to pass on. Only have 3 right now. An INW Shisha Strawberry is one I remember. Horrible stuff but most seem to like it.

+1 on the ceramic tweezers. I also like using the Kuro coilers coiling tools. I bought mine from fasttech for a few bucks not really expecting much from them but I find I use them more often than not. I have tried other coil tools and found most to be lacking so it's either the screwdriver or the Kuro coilers for me.

wire cutters, small pliers, coil jig, small screwdrivers and hex keys, ceramic tweezers, angled tweezers, regular tweezers. you can probably get everything i listed here for around 20 bucks total.

also most important (and it'll cost more) is a meter. get a good meter, preferably one that can fire your build. I have the coil master 521 tab. but i seen a sale on this geekvape one
http://www.efun.top/geekvape-521-tab-mini.html

I might get one as a backup. I'm kinda sad i didn't order an extra tab on black Friday when they were 10 bucks lol. especially with all the order i made

I am an electrician and have a meter that I've been using. Resistance is spot on with what my mod says. (Meter is a $1000 meter)

Yeah..it's a fluke process meter. U use it for automation and things if that sort. I would love to get a geek vaoe like you showed though..awesome to be able to have a nice stable platform, fire it, and read ohms all at the same time! I ordered a jig on ebay....shoukd be here Friday

yeah the tab meters really make building easy. not necessary if you have your own already but still more convenient if you can spare the money

My 2 bits for what it's worth

You can get by wrapping around screwdrivers, nails, or what ever but a dedicated coil jig is worth the few bucks. The ones I recommend are

Something like the Coil master, UD, etc. for basic round wire or twisted, not for Claptons though the knurling on the screw head screws up your wrapping wire. I'd like to slap the genius who thought it was a good idea

My Favorite coil jigs are -

UD V1 coil jig, getting very hard to find so I've got a backup in my FDA Stash

accessories-ld-coil-jig-box-contents_grande.jpg

Second favorite, works great too but not as good as the UD V1 IMO.

stainlesss-steel-micro-coil-jig-coiler-for.jpg

  • Other essential tool is a dedicated Ohm Reader, most accurate I've researched is the USA Ohm Meters. I've got the Fire Meters single battery and dual parallel battery models. I like them cause you can build, pulse and check your ohms. The Fire Meters aren't essential but a basic Ohm Meter is.
  • Flush Cut wire cutters, get a decent pair. Cheap ass wire cutters will work for a while, but dull quickly, get nicks and just make life difficult. I build a lot of coils so I got the Tronex cutters. Very expensive like around $50-$60, but they cut like butter and the edges hold up well.
  • Ceramic tweezers, get them cheap at a lot of places

That's the essentials.

Now a couple of nice to have are items I recommend are

  • Nylon jawed pliers for wrapping/straitening your coils and won't screw up the wrapping wire like on Claptons
  • Drill for straightening wire, making twisted wire and of course making Clapton wire

nothing is really "must have" except an ohm reader. You can use the one on your regulated mod, but the ohm reader also acts as a build deck.
Is it worth it to spend the money for a coil wrapping jig? I think so. You can get them cheap at fasttech. Also teflon tweezers (and replacement teflon ends) *I bought 2 sets of each*.
You can use your regular needle nose pliers to tune your coil, just dont fire while pinching the coil. Fire, heat, stop firing, pinch, move pliers, fire, heat, stop firing, pinch.. repeat until coil is tuned.
One of these days, some ingenious idiot will come out with teflon jigs.... that you can fire your coil ON to tune. Not something you would NEED for every build, but by God, I wish I had them for the one i just did using 32ga ss wire. LOL. Its like knitting with mouse fur.

* I'll post a vid of that new build. It's pretty simple so I'll post in this section someplace.*

Fasttech.. bling junkies bestest friend. LOL.
I got my first and only tank, a kanger toptank mini, then got a spare base (to build on) and a couple extra RBA mini. Grab about 5 of the spool tamers. $5 beats the hell out of rewinding 30 feet of wire. LOL. No way in hell will you ever get it back on the spool just the way it came off. Kind of like those cardboard inserts in packaged dress shirts... you KNOW it came off the damn thing... you know it did... you saw it! Now try to get it back ON the stupid insert. LOL.. Not gonna happen.

Unless you are building really low, the ohm meter in most regulated mods will suffice.

Yep. Unless you are clumsy and fire while you are mounting the coil... *Is someone having a BBQ?* or tip the mod while mounting the coil... dropping the stupid screw, and spending 30 minutes under the table before deciding that gremlins stole it. LOL
To be totally honest, building is about all I use my ohm meter for now. I use the mod to measure the resistance, since it is much more accurate. 0.01 ohm vs 0.04 ohm. It doesn't sound like a lot unless you are building really low at which point 0.03 ohm can be the difference between :bliss: and :bomb:

I went 9 months before I got my ceramic tweezers. Nice to have yep... needed.. meh.. but they are well worth having!
Personally, I like this jig...

Coil Master Jig Set
By the way, you have to get used to moving the part you turn a little as you wind, to keep the wire from crossing over itself (double looping). It isn't hard, and will save you from looking stupid at the vape shop asking your vendor buddy why the hell your coils don't come out like they do for those SOBS on youtube. LOL.

Yep but burning a bit of cotton wicking or a finger is good teaching techniques ;)

That looks like the set I finally got after almost 2 years of vaping. Quite handy.

The tools you have are more than enough for most types of build and wire. I guess adding a drill would allow for what the screw drivers dont.

I have been building my own coils for over 2 years.. I have yet to need or buy a single "Coil Building" tools. In fact the only Vape oriented tool I have is a 510 ohm meter. Everything else either general household tools or made from household tools. I my winder cores are things like drill bitts screw drivers bike spokes BBQ skewers and coat hangers. I even have a coil maki b good rig. Original design is from a jewelery tool.

basically, it comes down to how many coils you build and if you will use the item enough to be worth the cost. Most just use the little blue screw driver that comes with your RBA. That is 2.25mm. Some like a set of drill bits costing $1 from the dollar store or precision screwdriver.

I got a coil Winding jig for free as part of a large vape order. I use it to push the decks out of stubborn RDA's so I don't mar the deck with a screwdriver.
